I was troubleshooting some issues I've been having with my pc and I tried to restart it but the fucker automatically chose to restart AND update so that sucked. I left it for like 20 minutes and when I came back it was in a loop of the pc itself getting a little louder then stopping, with no power going to my keyboard and mouse. Also, nothing showed up on my monitor. Wtf happened?? When I tried to turn it back on it just gets stuck like it was before. I'm on windows 10...

So it's not a hardware issue - your PC does turn on, it just can't get into Windows?

Reinstall Windows.

I'm not sure? It should at the very least get to the bios right?

Does the board have built in graphics? Plug it in there. Also, re seat ram sticks. Check the CPU fan if it's spinning. Could also be a busted psu. Might need a spare machine with identical slots to isolate what causes the issue

Getting louder and stopping could mean the CPU is fried. The fan on it's heatsink revs up very loudly like that to try and cool it down before it gets damaged, but it may not have been good enough to save it.

It does not. I actually don't think the cpu fan is spinning. I just bought the power supply a few months ago.

Hmm maybe I don't think I have that on me though.

Well it's not doing that any more, do you still think that's it? Wtf why would it fuck up just from updating dammit...

Yeah its just quiet the whole time but still running. Yeah nothing lights up whatsoever. The only thing that lights up is a USB hub thing I have but that somehow lights up when it's turned off anyway.

It's unlikely that a software update could cause damage to a component inside your computer - it could just be a coincidence. Do you have a spare machine, or perhaps a friend who will let you swap components to test?

I thought the same but this thing is pretty old, maybe the update was too much for the cpu to handle?

I .... Don't, really. My partner has a pc that's pre-built and I'm pretty sure a lot of the parts aren't compatible.

I wanted to enable the thing that let's you use the full amount of memory you have, instead of half which is what it was using this whole time. I forgot what it's called, sorry.

If you can confirm this, it's an overheating issue and you'll have to get a new CPU cooler.

Could you remove the battery from the motherboard and put it back in, just to reset everything? It'll look like a watch battery. Just trying to make sure we've tried every avenue (although it does sound like it could be the CPU and/or CPU cooler)

oh you're fine

i recently had an issue with overheating, myself - cpu cooler failure - and it would always ramp up in temp and then shut itself off. the fact that yours is staying on has me getting the doubts about it being overheat, but you also did say you were using an older computer. even if i have doubts, treat the situation like you could cook your cpu, though. only keep it on long enough to test it.

how comfortable are you with opening it up and rooting around? i'd throw a hand near the cpu to see if i can't feel any questionable amounts of heat. but i would also echo the suggestion to simply re-seat what you can. particularly the gpu, because you're not getting video signal.

do you know if your motherboard has any diagnostic lights? little LEDs with stuff like 'VGA' and 'VRAM' and 'CPU' next to 'em.
