Like there's criticism of a show and its characters, and then there's complaining about a fictional 8 year old girl as if they take her and her character as a personal attack on them???

Like, her dynamic in the family is a mix of precocious brainiac, wise beyond her years and being somewhat emotionally under-developed in a way that contrasts with her intelligence. That characterisation moves around over the 30+ year run of the show, but it's a dynamic choice that brings a lot to the table.

This may be a product of talking to Americans about the Simpsons, because I swear to Christ the conversation is a lot more casual and fun in Australia, but whenever there's an episode where Lisa has a personal conflict people complain that she's being a brat and watching her is unlikeable, and how much better she's being treated than Bart if he were in the same situation. When there's an episode where she's smart and competent, people complain that she's being a Mary Sue who's being painted as so much better than the rest of her family when she shouldn't be. People seriously get upset over "character shilling" in regards to an 8 year old cartoon character.

That's not to say that the character is beyond criticism or anything, there's an episode where she gets a restraining order against Bart and basically forces him to live in the backyard after poking him with a 150-foot poking pole to enforce the distance requirements. But even then, it's a single plot in an episodic TV show that plays fast and loose with canon. It has jokes and scenes that will never be brought up again. I don't understand how someone would take that and like develop a grudge on a character who isn't even going to remember what happened come next episode.

Seriously, it's bizarre. Ever since joining GameFAQs and like reading the TV Tropes pages for the show, I never knew how legitimately ass-blasted people got about a cartoon little girl whose defining trait is being clever. I really do feel like if someone takes the character of Lisa Simpson as if she has personally wronged them, they're probably a bit unstable in other areas and I wouldn't want to be around that person.

You seem legitimately mad that people don't like her. Like it's a personal attack.

I've been thinking about this a lot, and frankly I tend to overtalk to make sure I'm communicating exactly what I want to say.

I guess the core point of what I'm trying to say is that the way some people seem to go after this character can come across as fixated and bizarre, and I don't understand why people devolve into Trump Speak while criticising a fictional little girl and shit.

Tbf, the Lady Gaga episode was a Lisa episode and it's the worst one.

I never got the hate either. Lisa the vegetarian is literally my favorite episode in the entire series. It handles the topic of vegetarianism thoughtfully and humorously.

It's like people who hate Peggy Hill and don't understand the joke

The hate for Lisa goes back a long long time. Even in the 56k dial up days I'd see people bitching about her as a character

I mean, to be fair, the fact that she's a fictional character does not mean her views and ideas are unassailable. All of her dialogue is written/performed by the writers/voice actor. She is a tangible creation, and all of her ideas are somebody's ideas.

Do I think it's worthwhile to hate a fictional character? Obviously not.

Do I think it's some kind of horrible sin to dislike a fictional character? Obviously not.

People have opinions.
