If you're going to call me a sword geek I'm going to tell you that those terms are just general ones and people don't usually make a Ling sword or a claymore or whatever. They just make a sword that in a general style and other people put it in those broad general categories, that typically apply multiple times to one sword.

Greatswords are generally 2-handed swords from Europe
Claymores are generally 2-handed swords from Europe
Zweihander literally means "2 handed" in German

so my guess is that it's 1 handed Japanese sword

I actually don't know that much about swords and kinda parroted that from a YouTube video I lost interest in after that explanation.

Probably a claymore though. Zweihanders are usually bigger than that iirc.

that is definitely the standard hilt design for a claymore

it's probably not real Damascus steel though, it's probably monosteel that has had a fake pattern etched onto it

i'm just gonna throw out some doubt on a "Damascus Steel" version of whatever it is being historically accurate
i feel like that's two different times and/or regions

i of course base that on absolutely nothing other than a gut feeling

Hahah not really.

Not long enough for starters at 4ft 1inch. The crossguard is too petite and the hilt would need to be longer to facilitate the style used for zweihander/montante's.

Damascus is a pretty general term in smithing and just basically means different types of steal and/or different sources of it. It's an extremely broad term and the picture (visual pattern on the blade) basically confirms that it is indeed Damascus but that doesn't mean a lot. It only speaks to the technique of the smithing and not the quality or style. Damascus blades can be utter shit and can fail like any other type of blade.

well yeah, it's true that the modern usage of "Damascus steel" basically just means pattern welded steel consisting of at least two different grades of steel. but it's pretty doubtful that this is even pattern welded steel, especially if it's a site that doesn't even know the correct term for the weapon it's selling, it's probably just monosteel with a fake pattern etched or printed on. you see that a lot in mass-produced "Damascus steel" weapons, where if you look at multiples of them, the pattern on all of them are exactly the same lol.

claymore had a strong lead, then i posted the zweihander pic and zweihander pulled way ahead
then sword dorks answered the call and now its claymore once again with a commanding lead lmao

I'm seeing Claymore.... the Long Sword looks the same but doesn't have the angle with the guards... for some reason.

Not sure if it makes a difference.

I don't get the obsession for overly long swords. I know I'm weaker than the average guy, but the average guy isn't going to be able to control that either.

Fuck yeah man that's where all I know comes from. Gladius is the expert here but if not for Forged In Fire, I wouldn't have known the meaning of the term Damascus. It's crazy how much there is to learn but nothing is really all that complicated. You just otherwise would have no idea.

I kinda wish that some games had intuitive crafting systems where legit knowledge played a part in how good your crafted weapons could be, like Skyrim for example.

there was this small indie game i played awhile back called Fantasy Blacksmith that was significantly more involved with the smithing process than Skyrim, but still pretty arbitrary and gimmicky. still, it was kinda neat if you're into that sort of thing. pretty buggy though.

that's one of the reasons i like Kingdom Come: Deliverance so much. still not super realistic swordplay, but just about as realistic as i've seen in any game.

i like watching the "Sword Expert Reacts to [Movie/Game]" series on GameSpot's Youtube channel. the guy they have on for that really knows his stuff.

yeah lol it's definitely claymore-ish, but about as accurate as you'd expect a claymore to be from a dealer who calls their claymores zweihanders

A claymore is a Scottish zweihander so it's both.
