No, that's not true. Some are smart but lack morals, and utilize bigotry as a way to manipulate morons. These tend to be the most dangerous type of bigot.

He's also a bigot, and the shit he's saying and doing is leading to white supremacists expanding their reach (White Lives Matter merch) and Jews being further persecuted through the mainstreaming of Qanon and other associated conspiracy theories, openly attacking figures like George Soros as a "Jewish Figurehead of the New World Order", and praising Hitler.

He needs help, but he's absolutely culpable for the shit he's saying, the people he's empowering and the attitudes he's validating in being a bigoted piece of shit. The same way that - say - Israel Folau, an indigenous Australian sportsman, is shitty for being vehemently and openly anti-queer while hiding it behind religious freedom, Kanye West is shitty for being an antisemite and inviting hate and arguably violence upon Jews.

They may be exceptional human beings in their fields, and they may be decent people with loved ones outside of the absolute horseshit they spew, but they are absolutely responsible for that horseshit and they absolutely, unequivocally, deserve the negative backlash and the damage to their names and reputations, at least until they're capable of showing some growth and leaving other people alone.

Mel Gibson was probably mentally unwell and needed some help when he told his girlfriend she was going to get raped by a gang of black men the way she was dressed. Still doesn't excuse the fact that he said that shit to another person to hurt them, and he characterised an entire race of person as violent rapists who would beat and rape his girlfriend as retribution for how she dressed. Fuck bigots, they're culpable for what they say.
