I'm of the opinion that they're both human. I do think that the thing is still alive and could infect humanity, because there's definitely unburned bits and pieces of it at both bases that could infect rescue teams.

not really. in the 3rd one childs was infected, but well after the first film.

It's unknowable and it doesn't matter.

There should be a spinoff where the alien takes over people's asses. They can call it The Thang.

I was going to ask if I inspired this topic with my post in another topic, until I realized that this topic was actually posted two days ago and thus predates that other topic (and my post in it). And I just didn't see this topic at all until now.

Which is funny, because it means we both sort of thought about Keith David being the Thing at the end of The Thing completely separately and unrelated.

To be fair, completely unrelated to canonicity of outside sources, Carpenter himself has mentioned at least once that one of them was a Thing in the final scene. And other people who worked on the movie have mentioned that there are ways to tell which because there are hints in the movie that imply the answer.

But then other people who worked on the movie (including the screenwriter) have definitively said that they were both originally supposed to be human, and that the final scene is more poignant when you realize they're both human and are both going to die, but in that final moment they still can't trust each other or be sure that they've won in spite of the fact that they've actually succeeded. So both of them are going to die always wondering if someone else is eventually going to come along, find the frozen Thing, and just start up the countdown to doomsday all over again.

So ultimately the real answer is that it depends on what you think makes for a better ending.

But Childs is totally a Thing.

He doesn't really seem like the sort of person who cares about movies at this point.

He's kind of given up on filmmaking entirely because Hollywood sucks, and now he's just way more focused on his band and music.
