but I guess there are the rare kinda weirdos who use it as an excuse to hurt others.

a classic book that shows the horrors of war and what it does to people, as well as puts into perspective the abhorrent accounts of people who've fought and gotten severe ptsd, is now considered propaganda... and shooting and killing, if not terribly crippling and maiming, your enemies and destroying the lives of their loved ones is where it's at... do such people even have a smidgeon of humanity left within them? or are they just sadists or people who do not care?

Eh met a guy recently. He didnt glorify war but he bitched about how he's far enough into his military career he might as well finish and get full retirement but that it sucked not actively being in a war cause it was boring.

And judging from his face he's taken some hits. He had some scars.

Different kinds of people I guess. I work with another vet and he about dived across the room when a inmate rolled a spray bottle across the floor in his direction. I asked him about it and he said he had a flashback of a grenade rolling across the ground at him.

Don't be mistaken; it usually is a goofy comedy anime. But sometimes the spy stuff can be cool, and the action scenes are nice. There's more scenes of this caliber coming up... But there's a lot of goofy comedy and cute gags so if you're willing to accept it's more often silly than it is badass it will be fine.

Sometimes it just reminds you the threats and danger behind the scenes of the comedy aren't a joke. I mean they do sometimes have arcs where they do more spy stuff.

I wasn't talking about on a personal level, but what war means in general.

during war, there are: rapes, human trafficking, forced combat, the destruction of families/communities, etc., and of course all of the death.

there are also long lasting effects, too, whether it's the PTSD people who experienced it might suffer or the physical damage done to them or the natural resources around them due to all of the contaminants that might have been used.

Ever want to know how to figure out really quickly someone has never actually been to war or seen combat?

Oh that's easy.

It's when a privileged multimillionaire politician states in her presidential campaign that "the greatest victims of war are women ". Especially when she did not have to legally sign up for the nation's sexually discriminative Selective Service policy in order to vote or apply for educational assistance, nor would she have ever been forced to enlist during any war time conscription efforts while in her 20s...

Quite an incompetently privileged statement for her to make indeed. And I for one as a man take pride in knowing she now regrets it.

Its weird to me that he wants a Storm of Steelesque book, because this cant be it all.

Earnest Junger was not particularly pro or anti war when he wrote about his experience in WW1 but this is, nonetheless, exactly the same type of stuff he wrote about. Because thats what living in a fucking hellhole for four straight years is like.

Its like did you even read Storm of Steel my guy? I did. And quite frankly, Junger was a nationalist, a hero, and one of the most courageous soldiers I think Ive read about in any conflict to date, and to a degree, he does thrive in this environment. But he really doesnt have anything to say that this movie doesnt portray. Trench life was awful. There was no honor in what they did, at least not in the grand scheme of things. Oh, theres individual acts of heroism and stuff like that, but it wasnt the grand adventure and be gunho, were going off to war! That they thought it was gonna be when it all started, and that realization hit them hard, and it hit them fast. Young men got chewed up by the millions and millions more lived in charnel house of horrors for years on end with no relief in site.

Storm of Steel describes the horrors of the conflict just as much as All Quiet does, its just he does a good job at describing it neutrally instead of making it staunchly pro/anti-war. But its all there if he even bothered to read Storm of Steel in the first place

I hope you guys are aware we're in a war already. The US is currently being attacked with the Fentanyl epidemic, which I last heard took over a 100K lives last year in overdoses, and our youth is being distracted and practically demoralized with Tiktok. Both of these are orchestrated by Chinese government. China even owns Tiktok and they heavily police what kids watch on the Chinese version of their app to encourage them to strive for realistic but ambitious careers like going into STEM as opposed to the majority of kids in the US see careers as influencers and streamers.

Now pertaining to the topic, at a microlevel, I don't want to be shot, shot at, nor have my limbs blown off, and I don't wish that on my friends or people around me either. Extending this to a macrolevel, I obviously don't want a hot war. I will also recognize that there are people who yearn and thrive to be in a life and death environment so you'll likely see a few run off to the military, maybe even join the Navy Seals to constantly see action.

But this isn't what war is for. The bloody toll can be a symptom, a consequence if you will, but not a cause. War is forces imposing ideals and usurping power from populations. You have to understand the motivations of why a country or force would mobilize against another country and the dynamics of interactions that escalated to that point else you'll only see pointless bloodshed and wonder why we can't all live together peacefully and harmoniously.

I wouldn't say all war is bad. Some countries I'm sure are better cause they had a revolution once upon a time.

Not positive but I'm thinking slavery woulda lasted a little longer had the civil war not happened if the south had just played politics they probably coulda kept it up longer then still probably woulda resorted to war once the eventually lost the political battle. Either way the south losing the war gave them little room to argue.

Violence should be a last resort but sometimes it comes to that.

This right here is it for me, like that's overwhelming evidence the guy who tweeted is fucking nuts

Someone who actually experience war on the frontline happens to have a candid, honest, "war is bad" mindset and that's still not good enough to convince this asshole.

Would he prefer a dishonest film? It's not remotely liberal or controversial to think living in a trench for years seeing all your friends killed is bad. It goes beyond any kind of politics and is simply a very obvious fact

One of the most interesting things to note is how this view point is a more modern phenomena. There's a very good thread on twitter talking about how ancient people glorified war to the extreme, and it makes notes that those that were to profit of it were the ones leading from the front. There's examples of armies demanding to go to war or how the Athenians rejected any peace terms from the Spartans even after being hit by a big plague. Actually it was a reddit thread:
