I dunno if I care about the plot in Bayonetta but I definitely care about the spectacle, which I would be inclined to count as part of the broader category of story.

I would definitely not play Bayonetta - or even more so MGR since that one was mentioned - if they were just gameplay with all the cutscenes and dialogue excised.

Speaking of cutscenes, I'm off and running and even by the prologue holy shit can the Switch not handle this game's cutscenes. Doesn't seem like they go above 30 and I swear I've seen drops down to, like, 10. Gameplay seems smooth so far, though, thankfully!

Bayo 1 had a great story and character. It was silly and ridiculous but still, it was good for its purpose. 2's story kinda missed what made 1's so fun, which definitely made the game overall less fun.

Luka was really annoying in Bayonetta 1 and I dislike the little Cereza plot arc. Bayonetta 2 gave Luka far less screen time but then introduced someone worse, Loki.

Yeah, story and characters really aren't Bayonetta's strong suit but at least 2 tones down the serious moments (which were very awkward and cringey in 1) and fully embraces the ridiculous tone of what compliments such a over the top action game.

And also really lmao at the people using DMC3 and MGRising as examples of great stories. I'm the biggest fan of DMC3. It is a Top 50 game for me from a pool of well over 1000 games that I have beaten, and I wouldn't call that game's storyline anything more than serviceable at best. Hell it doesn't even have the best story in the series. I think that distinction goes to either DMC1 or DMC5 (which again neither are anywhere close to an example of a great story).

Then we have Memetal Gear Ridonk: Rising Jetstream Armstrong Senator Revengeance. I guess the people who say the story is great here are the same people who rate Zero Wing 10/10 in the story department. Very good action game though.

The first game has 30FPS cutscenes but how do cutscenes possibly drop that much? Will need a patch, I'm guessing.

A story doesn't have to be legitimately high quality for people to like it. The DMC3 and MGR stories are very fun. I'd rather watch the Senator Armstrong cutscenes than put on The Godfather, doesn't mean I think it's actually better.

Yeah and Luka got exactly what he deserved as an annoying dude every time. He represented loser gamers who wanted the typical fantasy and got rekt over and over, it was glorious. By the end he had some decent development too though.

2 became way more serious too. Bayo became super subservient and stereotypical. Less of the near-4th-wall-breaking.

Luka is nowhere near as bad as he's being made out to be in the first game. He maybe has 2 or 3 moments where they play his list for laughs but other than that he's usually protecting the little one and doing a good job of it.

Is nobody else started yet? I'm a few chapters in and am really liking what I'm seeing, some really bad performance issues in specific setpieces and cutscenes aside.

Summoning demons is so much smoother than I expected it to be, you can legit weave them into your combos any way you like without ever even dropping a juggle, it's awesome!

Im up to chapter 3! Im enjoying the demon mechanics way more than say, Astral Chain. Also, seems like the scoring is way more lenient than the other games, dying incurs no special scoring penalty for example

oh right you can scan 32 amiibo per day in Bayonetta 2

and earn basically 500K in halos to buy upgrades lolz

I'm a bit sad that this topic just totally died as the game came out, because this is undoubtedly a return to form for Platinum. I'm approaching the tail end of the game and the gameplay has remained totally killer. Bayonetta's moveset in this game is absolutely insane and you have so many options in combat that it's legitimately overwhelming even as someone who was able to largely handle DMC5 Dante. Dante still ultimately has more at his disposal since Bayonetta is limited to two weapons and three demons at a time, but there's just a TON of stuff in this game to play with and it feels incredible to weave it all together.

I can see some people still preferring Bayonetta 1 since this game's combat is such a huge departure from the pure melee of the original, but IMO there are games that do what Bayo 1 did better and there's really nothing that successfully pulls off the "super powerful summoner" fantasy in an action game quite like this one does.

All that gushing aside, this game's performance is horrid. It legitimately feels like a cross-gen game that we're playing the inferior version of... but there's no better alternative in this case. Combat is playable but cutscenes are really choppy and the game's visuals overall suffered big time in an attempt to make all this kaiju summoning nonsense feasible - and it was still ultimately a failure IMO! This will benefit enormously from either a hypothetical Switch Pro or improved emulation (game is currently experiencing some issues that should be ironed out soon-ish) but it just feels unfortunate that something this ambitious for the genre had to come out on hardware this weak.

Luckily the game's cutscenes do appear to be capped at 60 fps, not 30 (it took a pretty sad amount of time for this to become evident) so when this game is playable on better hardware, most of its serious issues will be resolved. Sadly won't fix stuff like the generally lower fidelity in regular areas but them's the breaks!

Hopefully finish up my Bayo 2 replay tomorrow, then I'll be ready for when the game arrives on Thursday

Is there a frame rate difference with docked vs undocked?

Better frame rate undocked. Have heard complaints about resolution in that mode though.

I cant believe Bayonetta gets a doomtrain summon

I have no idea how to use Doomtrain effectively, but its counterpart weapon is kickass.

Doomtrain is entirely too galaxy-brained for me but I have to imagine if you can reach a level of proficiency where you can use it without dropping combos then it gets absolutely wild. Its weapon is immediately awesome, though. Weapons in general in this game kick ass, which is great since I was initially worried about the loss of hands/feet loadouts.

Now Bayo 3 is coming Friday instead of Thursday

Just finished this today and yep it was definitely Bayonetta. These games are consistent quality but I can't say they ever blow me away. Also this is probably a hot take but the spectacle got in the way a little bit for this one I think. Maybe I'll share more thoughts once everyone is done and starts posting their thoughts.

I'm also done and have tons of thoughts but I'll also wait since it sounds like a bunch of people haven't been able to start yet. I will say that I feel like this trilogy is basically pick your poison with 1 being overall the closest to "perfect" but this game took some huge risks that IMO largely pay off. For whatever else happened, the core gameplay is astonishingly good and it managed to take a step forward and do something unique for the genre, and that deserves a ton of respect IMO.

There are some weird weapons in this game.

I think the weapon selection is one of my favorite things about Bayonetta 3. So many fun, inventive choices!

Just finished the game on Expert! I had a lot of fun, the combat is still great and theres lots of cool weapons to try. I enjoyed the demon summoning system, and theres a lot of cool set pieces. I also like that mostly every cutscene was fully animated.

The story was indeed pretty bad, or at least it wrapped up really poorly I know story isnt important in the Bayonetta games, but as someone who enjoys these character it was a shame to see them handled so poorly. Dont know how to feel about all the gimmick sequences they were better in this game than previous ones, but there were also way more of them

Chapter 4 have had a weird glitch happen to me where I can't pause or open the menu at all

Finished it earlier today.

Utterly fantastic game. The best of the trilogy, and my favorite character action game period. Maybe it's just because I play a fair amount of Switch games, but the performance issues didn't really bother me. I love all the variety (you can really feel the years of development put into it), and the core combat is perfect too. Glad Platinum listened to my complaint that there weren't enough huge enemies in Bayo 2, hehe.

I'll add that the cutscenes are the best in the trilogy by far, since they mostly focus on cool stuff happening and are more of a vessel for spectacle than boring exposition. The story itself was fun too, thin as it was. Viola being dunked on by the universe never got old.

okay saving at Rodin's mid-chapter then quitting the game and reloading fixed my issue
