Most of the trailers and stuff Ive seen for his movies make him out to be some kind of badass that can destroy everyone which gets kinda old. Can he ever just be a mortal man with normal weaknesses?

But that was before The Rock was popular.

Has Rock gotten his ass kicked in a movie since he became "big"? As in, after Fast 5 I guess.

As far as action is concerned, his film career is more or less an extension of his wrestling career.

In wrestling,
  • He always had to physically intimidate someone and verbally put them in their place.
  • He always had to go up against multiple opponents / impossible odds.
  • His action had to be over the top.
  • His losses were always against greater numbers / outside interference.
  • There's always going to be some element of comedy.

That pretty much carried over into Hollywood. Take The Rundown for example.

He defeats an entire football team by his lonesome before getting ambushed.
He punks out Seann William Scott.
He has Christopher Walken and his crew dead to rights at gunpoint, but spares them for seemingly no reason.
He takes on a bunch of tribal warriors by his lonesome.
He has a lot of comedic banter throughout the film and a goofy scene where he trips out on some jungle fruit.
The big fight at the end is Rock alone, with fists, taking on three men armed with two whips a piece.

To be fair, it's not that far removed from other action stars. Sylvester Stallone is the only one I can think of who will really lose in a one on one fight with no excuses. But The Rock's over-the-top style calls attentions to the trappings of what it means to be an action hero.

Schwarzenegger lost in his literal debut movie.

He often has stalemate victories as well where he kills the bad guy but dies in the process.

Bruce Willis also lost badly in Sin City. He gets his revenge later but in the beginning it was a pretty decisive loss.

That doesn't count. He played the villain. They're expected to lose at the end.

And he also requested a sequel the better part of a decade later so that he could turn that character into a hero. And he proceeded to win all three fights against the villain robot who was supposed to be a superior model. Arnold's heroic characters would often get captured or lose at some point in a film, but typically in the standard format where it's a circle of villains ensnaring the hero. Aside from Batman and Robin, where he once again played the villain, I can't think of too many times he lost a fight cleanly. He lost to Stallone in The Escape Plan, but only because his character threw the fight as a distraction for the prison guards.

Seagal is the absolute worst. He was given the keys to the kingdom and threw it all away to make straight-to-video trash where no one can ever touch him. Imagine throwing away the opportunity to be a Hollywood leading man just because your ego wouldn't allow you to ever be in a competitive fight.

That window of opportunity was mighty thin and Seagal is basically an elephant seal.

I don't think his choices would have made much difference.

I was thinking that it felt like there was a shift when The Rock really became a big force in Hollywood for his own career. Where it felt like he changed from being an entertainer/actor to a proper business man who is always selling and marketing himself, his movies and his products.

I narrowed it down when he started making movies from his own production company

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Bucks_Productions

It wasn't long before that he was selling gym apparel and since then he has branched off to other things like his own energy drinks. He's out there hustling himself as a brand now and usually that means he is only going to play badass and likeable characters.

This captures it perfectly. Something had seemed off about The Rock but I couldnt put my finger on it. Hes a business man first and an entertainer sort of on the side now.
