If a negative answer offends them, then yes, the person asking was expecting a positive response.

...I don't really know what to say to you if you think the expectation of not being treated like dirt for politely asking a question isn't a reasonable one.

Ah yes, all those panhandlers that store owners leave roaming around inside their businesses to accost their customers for money

I got asked for money while sitting down in a restaurant, a couple of months ago. They came up to where my family was sitting, and asked us straight up for "spare some change", before being chased out by the workers there.

Man, that's crazy. Very similar to an interaction I had at Walmart:

I ran by walmart (8pm after work) to grab a certain pizza and burgers but they were out so i called my wife to figure out something else to get.

While on the phone a girl approached who seemed like a beggar and interrupted my call saying: "Can i ask you something?"

I said: "No, go away"
She says: "Are you crazy!?"
I say: "Fuck you!"
She says "Fuck you!"
And walks away.

I explained what happened to my wife and decide on another pizza and burgers to get.

I mean, I doubt it, but even if it's true your one anecdote hardly means that if someone approaches you in a department store that "9/10 times" they're going to ask you for money.

Usually if someone is interrupting you while youre on a phone call, its important so you should have at least got the gist of what she was trying to tell you. You can decide if you want to return to the call after you at least know what is happening. Maybe you were blocking the way for her cart of products or something

TC didnt and cannot give the proper context to this since he was absorbed in the phone call and didnt bother to figure out what was happening so we cant say with certainty if she was in the wrong or not. She shouldnt have resorted to swears and insults like a stereotypical CEman though

I mean, picture yourself in this scenario.

You politely approach someone and say "Can I ask you something" and they turn to you and say, probably quite rudely if his attitude in this topic is any indication, "No, go away" like you're a speck of dirt.

Is her knee-jerk reaction of "Are you crazy?" really that strange? TC was openly rude first. Why is she the problem for responding rudely?

being treated like dirt
It's hardly being treated like dirt when a complete stranger in the middle of a phone call tells you to go away. It's basically the expectation. You don't know him, he doesn't know you, he's clearly on the phone...leave him alone, why on God's green Earth would you think it's an appropriate time to ask somebody a question? You're in the middle of a store, you can just find somebody else who doesn't look occupied already.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with dismissing someone when you're already in the middle of a conversation. Expecting a polite response when you're interrupting someone's conversation is the unreasonable thing, here.

Obviously, her follow-up of "Are you crazy" is suspect, too. Most people would just accept that they've made a social faux pas and step off, continuing their day...but no, she continued the interruption after being told to fuck off.

You are not entitled to another person's attention at any time. Do not be offended if a random stranger has absolutely no interest in dealing with you. This rule applies at all times but applies with double strength when said person is already on the phone or talking to somebody else.

It's common courtesy to leave people alone when they're on the phone.

Yeah, except we have no idea what she was going to ask because TCs immediate response was to basically tell her to go fuck herself, when your entire post is basically summing up the fact that if she felt she needed to specifically ask him a question while he's on the phone, it was probably something important. Which really just makes him more of an asshole. So I'm not really sure what point you think you're proving here.

But, I'll reiterate to you that there are lots of things people aren't obligated to do, but do anyway because they're not dickheads who's first thought is "How DARE this beggar tries to approach me"

It literally does not matter what she wanted to ask. You always have a right to tell somebody to go away, and you should never expect a stranger to stop what they're doing and pay attention to you.

Lol at "No, go away" being a knee jerk rude and being treated like dirt action.

If you cant handle this response then no, you cant ask random people on the phone a question. Cuz ill cuss at cha.

If i was asking random girls out and they told me "No go away" it would be hilarious and ridiculous to retort with "Are you insane!?"

She probably didnt ask anyone else on the phone whatever the hell she was asking.

Honestly, based on some of the responses in this topic...you can kinda tell who has the luxury of living in an area without many beggars and con artists.

It's a regular occurrence around here to be approached with some elaborate con asking for $5-$10 to fix a problem. Usually it's the old "I brought a water bottle to fill with gas, can I get $5?"

Like bro, $5 is like 1.3 gallons, that's a 16 oz. bottle, I know your ass is going to buy cigarettes or something.

If they needed to ask you something important, its not their responsibility to deal with hostility from you. The fact that you just assume someone is a beggar speaks a lot about your mindset here. Youre absolutely in the wrong in this interaction

If you knew you didn't want to hear the truth, why did you make this topic? You don't know what they were going to ask you, you don't know if it was or wasn't important, you assume they are some sort of beggar because they tried to ask you something while you were on a phone (?????), by default you were the asshole in that situation. You can't say you weren't the asshole because you don't know what was happening and can't give the proper context. End of story.

You being interrupted on your phone and not wanting to talk to a beggar is like someone saying youre in the way of a forklift and you yell at a forklift operator that just said to move away from the forklift, which you would see, that he was a beggar.

Your example is the dumbest example you could possibly use and made me feel like i was completely right in my interaction. So i applaud your effort.

TC has no idea what was actually going on, and has no idea whether it was important or not. It's only rude if it wasn't important. It's correct to assume it's important if someone is straight up trying to talk to you when you're on the phone. TC didn't even give them the light of day, just reverting to his grade school instincts and throwing insults at someone he thinks he's better than based on nothing. It's a logical conclusion that TC is completely in the wrong and there hasn't been a single compelling argument to the contrary. TC keeps digging himself deeper and is upset people are calling him out on his behaviour. If TC didn't want to be called out and doesn't want to accept the facts, why was the topic made? To troll?
