This causea traffic because they will coast slowly through the light that changed at 10mph then slowly...very slowly go like 65mph in a 50mph zone.

So basically they... race everyone to get in front to... sit at a green light and slowly coast at 10mph until back up above the speed limit.

Then not everyone gets through.

I've always wondered why it takes people so long to catch up, or even start moving after a light.

I'm going the speed limit within about a second or two and they just started moving

I'm not gunning off the light because I don't want to burn a gallon of gas just to hit the next red.

What kills me is people who sit with their foot firmly on the brake until the person in front of them has reached their destination or some shit.

If automated cars will fix anything, it's congestion at lights because once one goes they'll all go.

You can't just go when the light turns green anymore, you have to give ample time for 2 or 3 people to run the red

No, I mean if I'm like the 5th car deep, car 4 won't even budge until car 3 is past the light nearly

People just don't seem to know they can slow roll nearly as soon as the light turns.

if you ain't stepping onthe gas in less than 150ms after it turns green then what are you even doing.

If everybody's serious and not trolling, then you really should not do that because there's a chance somebody will go through the red light and hit you. That's why people take their time waiting.

0-60 in 4.7 seconds in my car. Slow ass goobers need to move the hell over all the time not just at lights.

I find it better to anticipate and pace oneself. Meaning there's no point in hitting 45 if you're gonna be stopping, so better to coast a bit at 40 and hopefully time it so that you catch up just as the light changes and cars depart. This way you can avoid a full stop. I don't mean to intentionally go slow either, just no point in accelerating into a harder stop.

Ofcourse this doesn't always work, so instead there's a lot of wasted effort to gain no advancement as everyone speeds to a dead stop.

Speaking of, since we live near a street corner with a 3 way stop. I find it incredible the amount of cars that are literally flooring it/accelerating right up until 60 feet from the stop. Then they have to brake hard and you can hear them one wheel peel occasionally. Really says a lot in just a short distance.

Thats what your eyes are for. If the traffic is stopped in both directions theres no reason to wait another 4 seconds before accelerating to walking speed through the intersection and then taking another 30 seconds to accelerate to 65% of the speed limit

Tbh probably the thing is most people not able to do is sense when light about to go green.
Those who can are able to scan ahwad of time.

You already know it is clear when the light goes green unless it is super heavy traffic.

And yes, I'll admit I used to drive fast. A few things kinda put it into perspective though and I became more conserved/patient. I went to overtake a car, underestimated, and came way too close to having a 50 mph head on into another car, or causing a 3 car accident. Ironically the only collision I have had is someone took a left turn from a turn lane with a red light, when they were reacting to the light next to them being green. Hit the quarter panel while I was doing 45. This was several years after I stopped driving aggressively.

I am not advocating speeding.

You dont even need to sense. If its in a city, you can see the traffic light reflections in building windows. If theres any amount of traffic at all, you can tell because the traffic stops. You dont need some superhuman mental clock and know its been 1 minute 27 seconds since the last green light and its about to be your turn

And if it's late evening/nighttime/early morning, you can just watch the glow of the lights you can't see

Accelerating to the speed limit is not speeding.

Not saying you are, nor I, I just used to accelerate/drive too swiftly. In the case of me saying 45, the limit was/is 45, and sometimes a smoother ride is to coast down to 40. If done correctly you arrive just behind the cars departing from a stop and you don't have to come to a complete stop yourself.

This all comes down to the tempo/amount of traffic mind you.

It's bad for gas mileage and wear and tear on the engine. Why would I do that to save a few seconds?
