Yeah I feel like martinet could have still been Mario and just dialed it back from Mario wahooing the whole movie

Chris Pratt was really phoning in his introduction in the direct. "This is a man who gives zero shits about this movie and doesn't interview well" were my thoughts listening to him. He might as well have been reading from really slow cue cards.

Jack Black on the other hand was in the room and sounding excited. I still question if he knows anything about Mario but I honestly feel like that might have partly been because Chris Pratt made me wary. But also he may have been using enthusiasm to cover his lack of knowledge.

I didn't watch the direct, but I will say just based on the trailer I'm ok with black being Bowser. It didn't seem too crazy.

Jack Black does play games, at least he used to. He had that one video game he starred in, even. I have to figure he at least played Mario when he was younger.

Has Benjamin ever played a character like Mario? I've only seen him do Bob's burgers, Archer, etc.

What kind of vocal range does he have? His voice is great for Bob and sterling, but I don't think Nintendo would want his normal sounding voice for Mario.

He actually has a lot of vocal range but people usually cast him to do the one voice.

I came in this topic ready to say this sounds like bullshit and more unfounded Chris Pratt hate.

In most cases, because they want to use star power to sell the movie.

In a lot of cases, I understand why. If you're making a random animated original movie, people are less likely going to go see it if Johnny Who-Gives-a-Fuck is voicing the lead, instead of a popular actor.

But in this case, it's Mario. They could have hired almost anyone to do the voices and people would go to see it because it's a Mario movie. So really, in this case, hiring actual voice actors would only have been a win because it would have made the movie quality better over adding a bit of star power/publicity because, again, it's a fucking Mario movie.

I still think Jack Black killed it at least.

I don't even know who Chris Pratt is.
Though I really have hated on Mario's voice almost from the start.
It is a stupid Italian stereotypes voice done in baby talk.

So I'd fine a blank US voice less cringe.

Having said that, Mario is Italian American.
They really should have just hit up NYC, the Boroughs in particular, and tested for voice acters, without even telling them what they were looking for.

But no, all this shit is a cash in for people who are already loaded.
