This might just be my old age speaking. But just stuff in general just look so boring now a days.

Computers which were not gaming computers could come in different colors. Not just white,or black. But bright greens and stuff. Grills came in colors.

Stores building design had their own flavor. No everything looks like a black box.

Cars could have Neon lights on them. ( I so hate that I was too young for that era). But you drive a lime green car now with purple lights on the bottom people will roll their eyes at you. Back then you would get high fives.

The freaking Hornet jackets..heck everything about the Hornets.

Even things like screens savers and desktop themes had flavor. Does anyone still have screen saver or does the screen just go black?

I am not just saying the old styles where better. I am saying they existed. Now it is like the new style is we don't have any style. Something tacky is better than papyrus.

I just got a home and it looks so much like the other homes around me. And this is something changing as week speak. They have been building my community for a few years. The Houses before even have more flavor and that was just a few years ago.

I think Christopher Nolan is single handedly responsible for this after the release of TDK. He killed the colorful campiness of 80s, 90s.

I agree overall but not really with this part. Computers back in the day were mostly just beige, now they're white, black, silver, etc. and even the non-"gaming" ones often have that stupid rainbow lighting shit

you know, maybe there's a correlation by the lack of colour and people going crazier nowadays than back then.

the only real place you'll see amazing displays of colour is in a toy store.

yea.

00s computers looked different but were trash, crappy scratchy acrylic, tube lighting, lots of plastic, transparent fans with bad quality control.

I call that style, Aggressively Generic.

In the case of the shitty logos, it's because everything is an app now and needs to be recognizable in miniature.

But if you take a risk, some people might dislike it!

Everything is disposable and the customer doesn't matter.

Giving the customer a fun, unique experience is less important to the owners than easily being able to easily sell the building to a different restaurant franchise later.

I love that pistons logo. Very clean and its a classic from the 70s.

And its not just that fast food chain, even some stores are doing it and it is incredibly bizarre

Don't even get me started on all the stuff they took out in the transition from windows xp to the new OS in the 2010s era and beyond.

Oh also how come people like Apple's boring monochromatic look and design. The logo went from an awesome rainbow colored apple to ugly gray. Can't believe 90% of the world find that cooler than a rainbow assortment of colors

Eh there's still plenty of vibrancy. A lot of the examples ITT are tied to corporations, which have always been souless. The reason they made Ronald McDonald is the same reason they don't really use him anymore.

I tend to prefer the more business style approach. Colorful things hurt my eyes. Colorful things that are colorful for marketability? That hurts my soul.

Late 90's to very early 2000's NBA was peak sports design though. Nothing else can compete.

Hiring an architect to design your dream home is probably more expensive than it was 40 years ago. "Cookie Cutter" homes are cheaper.

Fight back. Buy a 3 D printer. Kits you can put together are an option for the Prusa brand.

I don't really remember this being much of a big thing outside of the old emacs.

I used to have a Sony PC that was purple but even when that existed you didn't really have a lot of color options and it mostly depended on Brand. Back in the days of gateway in the early 90s PCs basically just came in various shades of ugly white / cold unfeeling machined tan.

I enjoy modern design for the most part. Decent-priced new build houses are usually gorgeous, much more than the tacky 90s and early 2000s McMansions.

...But good lord, agreed that the current McDonald's design is inexcusably bland.

It's probably cheapness. That bright red McDonald's probably cost a lot of money to upkeep, so they made it boring and brown so when it gets dirty it's the same color. Less color in the logos saves money on ink (I mean, I don't actually know this, but I suspect that's the reason they do it even if it's not true). The art style in post 39 saves them money on having to hire an actual artist. Most of all, having as little personality as possible means you run less risk of offending others, and you don't want to offend people when they are hungry and they want a pizza and you have a pizza and want their money. But sometimes you're wrong, and the logo is just the one that used in the 80s and you're kind of pouty about something retro.

This is definitely an improvement

I visited the US for the first time in 8 years last month and...now everything just looks the same as everything else. Pretty much every building built or remodeled since I left has the same architecture now, regardless of who owns it or what it's used for. Everything tries to look like a house with cheap stonework to about waist height and vinyl siding the rest of the way. It's just so...soulless.

There's only one thing to blame, AND THAT'S YOU ALL! You all chose Starbucks boring "look how mature I am" look, and that's why McHappy turned into McBoring. Stop getting mad at the corps that always wanted to make money and get mad at yourselves for giving them the bad trends. smh.

They used to look goofy as fuck.

It was so refreshing seeing Apple's iPod being so sleek, so simple, so elegant (and the Nintendo Wii as well), but now every other company tries to emulate the look and yeah, it's time to move on
