Because people have tried things in the past like paying a few cents per hour or paying workers in company tokens that can only be used at the company store. Minimum wage is nowhere close to a livable wage in my city ($12/hr), so the government already allows them to pay an amount of money that you cannot survive on. The fact that so many businesses default to minimum wage is them telling the worker, I know this isnt much, and I would literally pay you less if I could do so without getting a criminal charge, so I will pay you bottom dollar and force you to do the work of four people. --- So long, Thanks for all the fish! ... Cotton_Eye_Joe posted... Wouldn't competition force employers to increase their wages?Competition doesn't drive wages up, it drives them down. It also drives fewer workers over longer hours. These will save the company money and drive up profits, which makes them more competitive than other businesses. Even with established minimum wage, many companies hire people illegally and give them less than that, either straight up breaking the laws, or providing them with "benefits" that they claim has value enough to offset their wages. This is why we need Unions and Labor Laws, to protect us from corporations doing whatever it takes to raise profits by exploiting their workers. --- Others don't get to dictate what's normal and what isn't. It's something we decide for ourselves. That's why it's the most important thing to us. ... Copied to Clipboard!
