cool.

Idk, I always thought it was kind of dumb we don't have consumer man-sized robots yet. They are just a bunch of servo motors and a computer. Also, you can't really compare this to a boston dynamics robot, since those can rip your arm off if they glitch out.

Elon is a vaporware salesman, but to be fair there's already a functional prototype, which is not the usual Elon vaporware.

I think the "removing menial tasks in factories" talking point is BS. Assembly lines already have designated robots where applicable. I already see this excelling with upper-class families and tinkerers looking for something to do the laundry.

At least, next 8 years, imo

Human robots could only make sense in the service industry. Everywhere you just make a specialized machine fir the task. Like the classic stupidity of having a humanoid robot driving a tank of flging plane

It's totally ok - most vapourware developers do have high marks in Design.

Yeah, there is very little point in humanoid robots in the majority of use cases.

I saw a inventory robot at home depot rolling around. It looked like a gigantic fridge moving through the aisles. I guess it scans inventory & answers questions, but asking a question to a gigantic moving fridge and following it as it slowly lumbers around doesn't seem to be much of an improvement from just asking a CS rep for help.

Tell that to the execs and shareholders who don't have to pay robots a salary and get to keep that money for themselves.

I guess, but I am not too used to gigantic robots in everyday life, so I didn't want to be in the aisle with it. Thing was probably a good six feet tall, took up half the aisle and sounded like a noisy copy machine as it scanned the inventory. Would hate to see a whole store full of those things, but I suppose that is the future we are going to.

Yeah, there is very little point in humanoid robots in the majority of use cases.

Their only real value is in contexts where you expect them to be able to do a multitude of different tasks in an uncontrolled environment.

Which generally drives the development, manufacture, and maintenance price up past the point where it's actually practical. At that point you're almost better off just keeping the human and specializing with a suite of tools that allow them to adapt and improvise.
