44. Orphan: First Blood (Paramount+)

ORPHAN TWIST SPOILERS INCOMING

I have no idea how this movie was so damn good wtf. What an entertaining prequel.

Orphan: First Blood is a prequel to Orphan, in which they tell the story where the Esther finds her way to America by pretending to be a missing daughter from a family.

You kind of need to talk about the Orphan twist to talk about this movie--they outright inform you of it at the start of this movie. So if you don't want to be spoiled on The Orphan, you should watch that before this one.

In any case, this movie rules! It sets the pace of violence right at the beginning of the film, and Esther is as cold as ever in this one, and this one has a twist that is also pretty phenomenal in its own right that changes the trajectory of this film entirely in such a positive way.

I was also surprised by how well they did the effects here. You can actually believe that Esther is a little person still in this film, using manipulation of camera shots among other things. They did a great job with this and it honestly is probably the biggest hurdle they jumped.

How they made a prequel so entertaining and actually better than the original is shocking. The idea they had here was perfect, and while it's a bit weird that they make you try to feel sympathy for Esther, I think it mostly works and swings you back around by the end of the film.

It's a hard movie to talk about without spoilers, but I think it's absolutely worth checking out if you ever watched The Orphan. Watch Orphan: First Kill! You won't be disappointed!

I was so surprised by Orphan too! As I said in the horror topic they pulled a Don't Breathe 2 on Esther but it really worked so much better. Movie's pretty damn funny too.

45. Phantasm (Shudder, Peacock, Tubi)

BOYYYYYYY!

Phantasm is about two brothers who attend the funeral of a friend who is murdered recently, and one brother witnesses a very creepy man taking the body of their friend. From there, some very creepy things start happening!

I have never seen this movie in full. I've only ever seen parts of it. But man, I think this movie is an all-timer after watching the entire thing. There is so much iconic stuff in it that I immediately remembered. I remember the Tall Man, I remember the sphere. And I remember moments that stuck with me without seeing the whole thing.

But man, the story they tell here is actually fantastic. The soundtrack rules. The characters are really good. It fires and hits on everything. It's so atmospherically creepy and unsettling at all times. It's really amazing that they manage to pull this off.

There's something amazing about the Tall Man, who is constantly pursuing them, non-stop. He's so god damn scary to witness. So daunting. So cruel. I love this villain. But the bond between the brothers were so great too and you really are enthralled and invested in them surviving this.

And then the ending hits and it's perfect. Completely perfect. I think it's a top tier ending and then it really opens this movie up to see what it's really about. The movie is about death, and death forever pursuing us all, and coping with loss. It's brilliant, and when you think back on the rest of the movie, there's so subtext in the film then.

Yeah, this movie rules. It's a classic I probably should have sat down and watched the entirety of a long time ago. I had a complete blast watching this, and I highly recommend it.

46. Hocus Pocus (Disney+)

Kids get horror too. And I figure I'd revisit my childhood with something that probably got me interested in Halloween and horror movies more than a lot of things.

Hocus Pocus is about three witches that get brought back to life and must track down a group of children and take their souls before sunrise!

You know, I think this movie really holds up still. It's hard to judge this since it would be judged on a scale with children's movies, but I think it makes for an entertaining ride at the very least. Plenty of scares to spook younger kids too.

But moreover, it works as a comedy extremely well. I don't think it's just nostalgia talking, but I think the comedy here is still pretty quality. I see why I adored it as a kid. All three witches, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy really threw their all into these performances and it shows. Every scene has something little with them that I caught, even in the background while others are talking. It really shows they just wanted to entertain, and they were perfect for these roles.

The story does go around in circles, it feels like, a little bit, but it does mostly seem satisfying and fun to follow. The kids involved are also good too and not written in an annoying way. They had some acting chops too in them. They help round out the film to make everything work with these Halloween and horror elements toned down to a children's story.

So yeah, I didn't know if this would hold up still, but it did. I think this is a quality film to show the children! Probably the best children's horror/Halloween movie in the end.

47. Martyrs (2008) (Tubi)

Jesus fucking Christ

Martyrs is about two girls, one of which was kidnapped and tortured as a young girl. And she wants revenge for it.

So I remember hearing about Martyrs and it being a fucked up film, but oh my god. It exceeded even my wildest expectations. But I think it's a tremendous film still.

I can't talk about the film much, because if anyone wants to see one of the most absolutely fucked up movies ever made, while somehow being a really, really good one, it's best going in completely blind like I did. But each act feels like a totally different film and it's insane how well the story progresses and escalates. Because frankly it really shouldn't.

This movie's story is a complete twisted and nihilistic journey and is not for anyone feint of heart. And I loved the story beats of it, at least. How everything makes so much sense in hindsight, but as things go on, you are almost blown away how it progressed like that.

And yet... the ending works perfectly for it. I can't talk too much about it, or anything. All I can do is recommend this movie if you don't think it'll make you too disgusted, because it does get to torture porn movies (which is why you'll notice Hostel hasn't been on these lists). In fact, I think I'd rate it a perfect score if they had left some things to the imagination a bit more, because I don't think it needed to be as horrific as it was at times. And it's not typically something I seek out.

But this movie deserves every bit of infamy it gets. Just be mindful of everything I said here before checking it out.

48. The Midnight Club: Season 1 (TV Series) (Netflix)

This is another Mike Flanagan project that seems to have fallen to the wayside because of Dahmer. Fuck that.

The Midnight Club is about a group of terminally sick teens who live at a hospice that meet up at midnight to tell spooky stories to one another. Meanwhile, there are also ghosts and cults and one girl thinks this place is magical and can cure her.

So this is a really touching and fun series. I greatly enjoyed how they managed to really tell some awesome stories about death, exploring the unknown and leaving early in a beautiful way. It's clearly aimed at young adults, but it doesn't make it any less poignant. There's some really, really great moments throughout this show that I think sticks with me.

There are, however, two characters that are extremely insufferable at different points in the story that make it a bit grating to get through when you're just throwing your hands up like "OH COME ON!" And yet, it still manages to do a great job redeeming them for the most part. There's so much charm to these unknown child actors that put on these wonderful performances, and the darkness of death coming for all of them and just trying to make the best of them.

It's not the best Flanagan project, but it has an incredible amount of heart mixed in with his horror. As of yet, there hasn't been a season 2 announced, but this is something Flanagan was really passionate about and he's so involved with Netflix that I see them giving him a second season to make him happy.

So yeah, I recommend this. If you like Flanagan's other stuff, you'll probably like this a lot too. It has some really great, really quality moments here that I think will definitely stick with me.

49. Nobody Sleeps In The Woods Tonight 2 (Netflix)

I vaguely remember the first film which tells you how much I cared about it. This one goes... a direction, that's for sure.

Nobody Sleeps In The Woods Tonight 2 picks up where the last one left off. Some loser police officer in the small town next to it decides to investigate the murders from the night prior where the final girl and the two monsters who were dead before are now alive and locked up in jail. Things get weird when they investigate the scene.

So this movie feels a lot more meta than the first movie, which was a typical slasher film that tried to be a little meta too. This one goes full force and ends up in a very strange position with 30 minutes left in the movie that is just basically all meta. And it's not good. It's not great. It's not funny.

What's worse is that they have characters you just cannot care about, and they try humor there but it doesn't work. Not a whole lot works in this movie, but it sure has a vision. Just not a tremendous one. I still don't get the purpose of it, and I feel like it undercuts the first film which I gave a 5.5 before, so say what you will about that.

But the movie is just really bad in that last half hour and I really did not enjoy myself. Not a good film. Gets some points for a couple highlights and good effects and make-up.

50. American Psycho (HBO Max)

I haven't seen this since it came out, but it's still an all time classic to me.

American Psycho is about Patrick Bateman, an upper class man who has a need to kill people every night.

Christian Bale is completely off the rails in this movie and I love it. They somehow make him incredibly charming despite the fact that he's this weirdo serial killer, and I have such a blast just laughing at a lot of the absurdity of it. Most characters in this movie do their parts so perfectly, and they're so insufferable all the time.

It's no secret that this is a commentary on upper class lifestyle and the absolute absurdity of it all, and it takes to attacking it in so many different ways. It's crazy following this movie and the madness of Patrick Bateman not just as he kills people, but in his everyday life as well. It's a very fresh take on serial killer films and I don't know that I really like any like this more than American Psycho.

This movie does everything right, it's an incredibly enjoyable, wild ride, and Christian Bale just absolutely makes this memorable. I love, love, love this movie and I recommend everyone check it out!

51. Hellraiser (2022 (Hulu)

I seriously don't know how they pulled off a good Hellraiser reboot, but I really want to see more.

Hellraiser reboot is about a girl who finds a puzzle box, and then when her brother disappears, she is determined to find him again.

This pretty much has all the makings of what makes Hellraiser so good, but I think it sets up for a better franchise now? Like the first two films I love, and I say many, many nice things about, and if I had means to watch the rest of the movies, chances are I would say many not nice things about them. Because any that I've seen just are not good. But this? Nah, they got it figured out now.

It's really surprising that Pinhead and the Cenobites seem like they aren't an active part in these movies much of the time. However, in this one they are an omnipresent threat. They are cruel, unfair, and don't give a shit about any rules. It just works. And we have the Lament Configuration upgraded to give it more LORE and intrigue. The fact that there are six different configurations is pretty dope now. Like, I love this. They really make it more complex, but in a good way.

The Cenobites are all terrifying still, with some new ones in the mix. And more than that, they bring the gore. Good lord, is there ever gore and nastiness in this movie. They didn't hold back and I'm really happy they didn't.

It's just a really interesting and wonderful new take on the franchise. I think with this new direction they have going on, they can make some far superior movies now. I don't like it as much as the original, but this one is damn close. Watch the Hellraiser reboot! It's shockingly great!

52. Black Christmas (2006) (Starz)

Black Christmas is an all-timer. Oops, not the remake. That one is dog shit.

Black Christmas is about a bunch of sorority girls in college getting murdered in their home by the child of the previous owner who lives there.

Yeah, this one takes any subtlety and enjoyment from the first one and wraps it in melodrama and the most ridiculous cartoon BS imaginable. It's impossible to even like or care about a single character here and they just try so hard to make the whole thing in your face spookiness but fail entirely to even generate any real scares or atmosphere. It was one of those 2000 slasher films that just didn't understand what makes a slasher good, and they just continually shat them out to make quick bucks off of teenagers who ate it up.

None of the kills are worth talking about, the villains are so fucking silly it's obnoxious, the backstory of it all is sooooo awful and they spend way too much time on it because they have no idea what else to do with the run time, and then when you mercifully think this is going to end, they manage to tack on even more in the hospital like respectfully go fuck yourself end the movie.

It's a movie so unaware of how awful it is, it's astounding. It's almost commendable in an awful way. But I think this is kind of the film that epitomizes the trend of horrible slasher remakes nobody wanted or asked for.

53. 10 Cloverfield Lane (Paramount+)

First, an anecdote from when I saw this in theaters.

As you know, this movie is entirely different from the original Cloverfield film. Halfway through this movie, there was a gentleman who stood up and said "Yo, where the dinosaur at?" and then he walked out.

Anyway, 10 Cloverfield Lane is about a girl who is in a car accident and wakes up in a bunker and told by the person who owns it that he saved her and took her there, and that she can't leave because something terrible has happened on the planet.

I love this film a lot. It's a slow burn that really exposes everything so incredibly well with the pacing. I love discovering everything with our protagonist, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, is always curious and always looking for something. It's great. And Howard, the guy who owns the bunker played by John Goodman, is done so incredibly well. I adore John Goodman as an actor and he does a blow away job here. The Taboo scene is my favorite because of him. And John Gallagher Jr.'s character is also great, and he's also trapped in the bunker.

I think it's just a brilliant movie that works so well. You're always rooting for the protagonist and you're right there alongside her as this mystery unfolds. And when it gets horrifying, it gets truly horrifying. And you can just logically follow it all as it goes down.

Of course, this movie does get a little weaker at a certain point, which you likely know what I mean when I've seen it. But I actually kind of like it still. If you're as invested in the protagonist, it works and makes sense for her overall story, even if it might not match the tone of the movie.

But I'll always recommend 10 Cloverfield Lane. It's a tremendously fun time and a great contained thriller.

54. Cult of Chucky (Peacock)

I did it! I made it to the end of the Chucky franchise! And this is actually a good way to end with it!

Cult of Chucky is about the protagonist from the previous film, Nica Pierce, being in a mental hospital after being convinced she killed her family and not Chucky, while Andy Barclay from the earlier films all grown up is on a crusade to finish off Chucky once and for all.

This movie is actually legitimately great. This feels a lot like the Chucky TV series in execution, and it's not surprising that they kept with this same groove and feeling. It's funny, dark, and twisted in all the right ways, and they manage to really get you interested in all of the characters.

Andy Barclay's actor is still just terrible and it's a shame, but the way they weaved the entire franchise back into this movie is pretty outstanding. It has it's limitations with the budget, but it's entertaining and fun and the story is actually really good as we watch it all unfold.

I think this is on par with the earlier Child's Play movies, and if you're going to pick any one movie to catch up with, let it be this one. They definitely had it set up perfectly for the TV show and they delivered with the entire concept. Definitely a recommend from me!

55. House on Haunted Hill (1959) (Shudder)

Welp, I decided to see this original classic and it is... extremely dated.

So House on Haunted Hill is about some rich weirdo offering a cash reward of $10,000 each (huge, huge money nowadays) if they can survive a night in a haunted mansion.

So like I said, this movie is so dated. It's slow, plodding, the effects aren't good at all, and yet I see why it was such a hit back in the day. I kind of appreciate the slow pace they allowed this to move at to give characterization to everyone. Vincent Price is always a joy to watch as well, so that definitely helps. His scenes are easily the best ones.

I really don't have much to say. It was interesting to see since I only ever saw the remake of this, but I like the story a lot. It's just that everything else kind of fails it and time wasn't kind to it. You don't need to check this out unless you're incredibly curious about it.

56. Shining Vale: Season 1 (TV Series) (Starz)

This is a show I was so excited to watch all over again. I completely love it.

Shining Vale is about a dysfunctional family that moves into a seemingly haunted mansion and the matriarch of the family being a former smut author that got famous but hasn't been able to write another hit book. However, a spirit is helping her write her book now.

So this might be one of the best parodies of haunted houses I've ever seen. Courtney Cox and Greg Kinnear play the leads in this show and they are at their absolute best and most hilarious in it. Courtney Cox, in particular, did the best work of her career here. She is phenomenal and I frankly didn't know she was as good of an actress she is in here.

But it takes a haunted house story and flips it on its head. The family from the start is a disaster. The mother is a wreck that can't get a book written and barely seems like she wants to parent at all. The father is a dunce trying to make it all work out, but his positivity is often misplaced, even after his wife had cheated on him. The daughter wants to hook up with a religious boy who is part of the chastity club and keeps messing things up. And the son is obsessed with video games and barely has any social skills. All of them create such an entertaining ride through this.

And it takes the piss out of this subgenre of horror so much in all the right ways. While telling a cohesive story that has a ton of depth to it about family, drug and alcohol abuse, and mental health, it is constantly giving us so many things to laugh at about spirits and haunted homes.

I cannot say enough good things about this show. It's one of my favorites and worth buying Starz for a month to watch. I can't think of a lot of horror parodies I've liked nearly as much as this, and I'm thrilled that a second season has already been announced! Check it out!

57. Brahms: The Boy II (Netflix)

Jesus this movie is really bad. Just really, really bad.

The Boy II is a sequel in which a family moves near the home where The Boy took place. Their son who was rendered mute from a trauma decides to become besties with the Brahms doll from the first film.

Is Katie Holmes really this hard up to have to take on this movie? Let me save you guys a lot of time: Creepy shit happens with the doll when they aren't looking. Only this time a boy is saying the doll is doing stuff and Katie Holmes is losing it because there ain't no way.

It's just more or less the same thing and it's so baffling they made a movie with this in mind. Only they didn't, and pardon me for spoiling anything from The Boy II for you, but after we spend the entire first film going "There's nothing supernatural here, just a fella in the walls" they end up at the end saying "Actually there is something supernatural here, and the doll influences people to be murderous weirdos."

BUT NOT ONLY THAT, they go one step further and end up showing you this demonic ass fucking doll going full goblin mode using telekinesis and making explosions and shit! Like any and all subtlety gone now! It's just a cracked out demon doll full stop.

It's a bad, bad movie and nothing is good or interesting about it and it feels like it goes around in circles forever. Do not want or need another The Boy movie. I give it a single point because even though demon doll was so fucking stupid, it actually looked metal as hell. Look it up.

58. Grimcutty (Hulu)

This movie is dumb but very mildly entertaining.

Grimcutty is about some monster that umm... well, it appears to you if you talk about it online...? And it slices and stabs you? Man, I don't fucking know.

This movie is so stupid and I am still trying to wrap my head around what the rules are with it or how it was all resolved in the end. Because the twist is really bad and makes things even more completely confusing and sends all kind of awful messaging.

There's decent acting given the garbage script they have, and at the very least the Grimcutty fella is a pretty solid evil monster. I like it, actually. It's menacing, spooky, and I think it works well.

But man does this script just collapse entirely. I just don't get it. It's really, really not good and as it goes on it just gets worse and more difficult to take seriously--and trust me, they want you to take this more seriously. I'll say it in spoilers because it kind of bugs me.

So the monster comes to kill you the more your parents are worried about you. And all he does is slice you with a knife. It makes me feel weird in that the messaging is that parents SHOULDN'T be as worried about their kids? Where they believe they are all self-harming, they should just be more hands off? It doesn't sit right with me.

I don't think this is particularly good, but I didn't completely hate it. So it has that going for it. Not worth a watch though.

59. The Host (2006) (Showtime)

I've never seen this before, but it's always been one I wanted to check out! And it's pretty awesome!

The Host is about a giant amphibious creature that kidnaps someone's daughter, and his family works together to try saving her.

Man, fuck that monster though. That thing was so creepy looking. Really good effects they made with it. They actively make this thing look horrifying and the way it's presented is just this unstoppable creature that just does what it wants. There are some legitimately chilling moments in this. The first scene with this thing is just insane and goes full throttle with it.

It's very clearly a commentary on quite a few things, including classism, American military meddling with other countries, pollution, and the Korean politics. The whole story with the infection was particularly interesting and went on some twists and turns I didn't expect.

The characters in this movie are all incredibly entertaining and good. They're a group of fuck ups and losers just trying to get a win with this seemingly impossible task, and the humor doesn't get in the way of any dramatic moments as well. I really enjoyed how each of them come together at the very end as well.

This film is awesome. Definitely recommend it, especially if you liked Parasite since it's from the same director! Big recommend!

60. Always Watching: A Marble Hornets Story (Amazon Prime)

it's the slenderman he's back to give us the slender scares

This is based on the Marbel Hornets story, like mostly the mythology from that, and they have a group of news reporters investigating the disappearance of someone. But then they start seeing Slenderman in videos they found. And then they start seeing Slenderman... IN REAL LIFE.

So I probably don't need to tell you this movie sucks. As far as I know, the original creators of Marble Hornets weren't involved. That said, I did enjoy Marble Hornets a lot! I jumped in about halfway through and was pretty invested in it, and it still remains the only Slenderman stuff that has seemingly been good aside from the Slenderman games I can't judge quite yet because I never played them and probably wouldn't like them much either.

But this movie is a meandering mess and I think it just fundamentally misunderstands what made the original Marble Hornets good. Instead we get lame scares and some occasionally clever appearances, but it's mostly just bad. You don't care about the characters or the mystery or anything all too much, and this doesn't really make Slenderman interesting. He's just an angry faceless fella who appears every so often, but they kind of make him a lot less mysterious?

Oh and the plot just... kind of ends like they said "Oh well, we figured out a lot of this, but not the whole thing, but let's just have a last stand with Slenderman instead." Totally weird like they just ran out of budget and said "Okay, let's just do the ending now."

I dunno, it's not very good or scary or spooky and that could have been resolved by allowing them to go anywhere spooky to film this. But instead it's just in houses and stuff. It probably peaks with the first scene because it has scary woods and whatnot!

If you liked Marble Hornets, you probably won't like this. And if you like Slenderman, you probably won't like this. Just not a good movie. I give it the score it has because of a couple of clever shots they did, but that's all it really deserves.

61. The Fly (1986) (HBO Max)

So uh, The Fly by David Cronenberg is certainly different than the original.

The Fly remake(?) is about a man who makes a fancy teleporter, but when he uses it, he merges with a fly that got stuck inside. It becomes horrific.

So Jeff Goldblum is out of his fucking mind acting in this. He's so good. This is basically the role he was put on this planet to have. He's just incredible at every stage in this movie and I'm shocked at just how great he was in it. He was even outstanding when he was a Brundlefly. His performance is magnetic here and I'm surprised how ripped he got for this role.

Geena Davis and John Getz also did great in this film selling the absolute horror that was the Brundlefly because fuck, this thing is so grotesque. Cronenberg had a vision for this, and it was certainly completely grotesque and twisted.

It cuts out a lot of the drama of the original with the mystery, and most of the moments I really liked from the original are gone, but that's pretty okay really. They did a completely original thing with this one and there's plenty memorable here. It became difficult to look at Brundlefly eventually, and then at the climax of the film it is absolutely unbearable. There's not a lot of movies that can do body horror like that, and I'm extremely impressed by how they pulled it off.

Man. What a good ass nightmare of a movie. It's definitely going to stick with me now. Really glad I ended up watching this classic, because I think it's a really special film in many ways.

62. The Invitation (2016) (Peacock)

No, this is not that terrible vampire movie that came out, this is an actually good movie!

The Invitation is about a man and his girlfriend joining the dinner party his ex-wife and boyfriend are hosting in their old home with a bunch of their old friends and a few new ones that his ex-wife made. But he suspects that there is something they plan on doing.

This movie is a slow burn, but it's a really strong slow burn. It takes it's time building tension as we follow the protagonist exclusively. We see things through his point of view only, which makes the mystery of it even stronger. When he suspects something is off, we're often with him there believing it. It's really interesting.

It has exceptional acting as well, and John Carroll Lynch is here to just make everyone completely unsettled. Logan Marshall-Green, the protagonist, and Michiel Huisman also do an exceptional job building tension between both of them.

After teasing you for a while, when we get to the end, it feels completely satisfying. I won't get into it too much, but when we're watching the conclusion unfold, it feels really good in an extremely tense way. I also like the little stinger we get at the end a lot too.

Anyway, I recommend this. It's an enjoyable slow burn ride.

63. The Endless (Shudder)

I kinda like this movie a hell of a lot. Really interesting stuff.

The Endless is about two brothers who escaped a UFO cult that head back at the one brother's insistence who never wanted to leave in the first place. When they get there, they suspect there is something strange happening.

So this is a film on a very clear budget, but man did they ever figure out how to make it work. It's a really good story and it does some clever things tog et away with that while being pretty unsettling in its own right. But it's ultimately a story about the bond between these two brothers.

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, the directors and leads in this movie, show the dynamic between both of them not being happy with their lives and the strife between the both of them. The one just wants to take care of his brother but just sucks at it, while the other one just wants him to trust him to make his own choices. And when they get to the cult, they start to get torn apart.

And they make it clear early on there is something very weird and very real watching them, and the way they slowly reveal things are interesting. Multiple scenes they have are just unsettling, and the characters they stumble across are fascinating as well. If I had one complaint though, is that it feels a bit long. I think they could have trimmed this down a little. At the same time, man is it ever good what they give us.

Definitely recommend this one. It's a fun time if you're looking for a movie with a lot of interesting ideas and a good execution on a budget.

64. Don't Blink (Tubi)

I remember watching this on Netflix a while back and thinking it was okay-ish. But no, this movie is downright awful.

Don't Blink is about a group of friends that arrive at a resort with nobody there. Then they slowly begin disappearing one by one.

So this movie is just about a bunch of unlikeable assholes disappearing and their worthless interpersonal drama that nobody cares about. Seriously, this could not hook me for even a second. I remembered next to nothing about this movie but the ending, which I also thought was... kind of silly? Like it is nonsense that no longer plays by the rules they established.

I was bored by the movie, didn't enjoy anyone in it, and I think it just sucks as a concept where people just disappear if you don't look at them. It's kind of really annoying the more I think about it, so I will do so no longer.

65. Channel Zero: The Dream Door (TV Series) (Shudder)

I made it to the end of Channel Zero, this time with my boy Pretzel Jack!

The Dream Door is about a couple that moves into a new home. However, they soon find a door in the basement that wasn't previously there, with something shocking inside.

So alright, this season also does a good thing where they delve into deeper concepts like attachment and emotional issues, and I think it does a really good job of that. Literally keeping things locked in a door in your mind is all kinds of clever and great.

And then you have Pretzel Jack! He's an incredible monster! He has so many memorable moments and I think he's absolutely fucking terrifying because they got a real contortionist, Troy James, to be this villain. And my god do they do so many clever and great things with the idea. My lord, I loved Pretzel Jack.

However, this has the same issue a lot of these Channel Zero seasons have (aside from Butcher's Block) where it ends up losing the plot in the last couple episodes. When the story focuses entirely on this terrifying SOB Pretzel Jack, it's outstanding. When it starts to go away from that a little bit... well, it's just not as interesting. It does SOMETHING interesting and I like a lot of ideas there, but it's NOT as interesting or tense as Pretzel Jack. In fact, there's a stretch of this story where there's no fear, no tension, just... blah. Drama. Who cares?

There's a ton to like about this season, but it just kind of misses the landing a bit, and they really should have kept the legend Pretzel Jack around more. The ending of the first episode is worth watching alone for just how outstanding it is. There's a lot of great directing in here too, because it's worth mentioning. Like the director of Butcher's Block, it's a shame E.L. Katz here hasn't really done some amazing things.

So yeah, I enjoy this season a lot, but I think the first half of it is definitely a hell of a lot better than the second half of it. Just watch it for Pretzel Jack though.

66. Apostle (Netflix)

I don't know why, but I put this one off for a long while. Probably the run time.

Apostle is about a man who returns home to find his sister was kidnapped by a cult. He goes to the island where they live and they're up to some creepy shit.

This movie is LONG. Way longer than it needed to be. I found myself not even getting into this movie until about halfway. Granted, when it hitws around the halfway point, it gets really damn good, but I was just really struggling for the first part of this movie.

But it has Dan Stevens in it, and I love him as an actor. He does an outstanding job--honestly, the acting all around is good. And when the movie really gets going, it's a freaking grisly trip. It's freaky, it's gruesome, and it's about as ugly and wild of a film as you can pull out of this. I think pacing is an issue with this, but I really enjoyed the movie when I got there. But man, it feels like such a slog at first.

I think I recommend it though, if you're looking for an old timey colonial story that goes full throttle at the end. It doesn't hold back at that point, so I think you can find a lot of joy with it.

67. Halloween Ends (Peacock/Theaters)

I know there is a lot of discourse about Halloween Ends, but I do not care for Halloween Ends.

Halloween Ends is about some schmuck named Corey that the town starts to hate because Michael Myers isn't around four years later. He goes down a dark path and takes Allyson, Laurie Strode's daughter, with him.

Listen, there's a lot of people who are acting like this is such a deep film that people who watched it just cannot get. And I say that's fucking absurd because they clearly tell you every single thing they want you to know about this movie in excruciating, blunt detail. There are entire scenes dedicated to telling you exactly they want to tell about this movie. It's about Haddonfield, the way the town reacts to Michael, and them creating another villain in Michael's absence.

But it's boring. It's just not interesting. It's not interesting when the movie bashes you in the skull about what they want you to profess, because at that point it's not good writing, it's just writing you think is good, but you don't realize how to show it rather than tell it. If it were interesting or good, I'm on board, but how many scenes with Corey, Laurie, and Allyson do we need saying the same tired stuff over and over?

And Corey isn't even interesting, which makes it more wild they spend so much of the film on him. There is nothing about this character that made me even an iota engaged here because it was so obvious from the jump what was going to happen and what this story would be about and it does not surprise you for even a second.

You know why Michael Myers is interesting? Because he's unknowable evil. You see the blackness in his eyes. You don't see a face there. You don't understand what the fuck he wants or what he's doing. And you certainly don't know why he's so crazy powerful. That's terrifying. A whiny little shit who became a pariah acting like the corniest 80's character ever does not make for an interesting character.

Nothing in this film is executed well at all. It's all so poorly constructed I just don't know what they expected here. Even the final battle between Michael and Laurie feels tacked on because they threw Corey's story in here and it's an afterthought of "Oh, I guess we need to have Michael and Laurie fight at the end of this trilogy." It means nothing. It feels like nothing. And when they go on with how it ends, it feels even more like nothing.

Laurie Strode spent the entire last movie in a hospital bed soliloquying about how her and Michael are so connected, and he can't die until she dies, and blah blah blah. Not even a factor in this movie. Means nothing. The big moment in Halloween Kills at the end was Michael killing Laurie's daughter and Allyson's mom. Means absolutely nothing in this film. Michael being some kind of unkillable evil that literally resurrects himself after certain death and goes on a rampage at the end. Doesn't matter! These three movies barely seem to have anything to do with each other. They feel so strangely strung together and don't feel even remotely the same. It's not a cohesive story at all.

It's a disappointment, and I think it's a complete bummer of a film that's held back by this idea that they were incapable of executing in a more interesting way. I give props for Corey's style points, but that's really all I can do with this movie. It's not good.

68. Black Swan (Hulu)

This has always been my favorite Darren Aronofsky film, wherein his range from amazing to complete dog shit (guess which one).

Black Swan is about a ballet dancer struggling to tap into a sexuality within herself to assume the role she needs to, and she slowly begins to lose her mind over it.

Natalie Portman is our lead here and she does such an incredible job. She hits the full gambit of emotions in this film and it may be her finest work ever. Seeing her life at home with a passive aggressive mother babying her, and then seeing her just struggle to free herself from being that timid girl is just enthralling. Everyone in this cast does an awesome job acting-wise and I think they all threw their all into this film.

This movie is a very slow burn though. It doesn't seem all too scary for a while, until it just hits a point it's just a batshit psychological thriller. I don't think it ever gets too, too scary though. Which is fine because not all horror needs to be terrifying. And it doesn't need to be with a story this good.

I think this film just delivers hard on everything it needs to be with a conclusion that feels so satisfying for what the story wants from you. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend you check it out. It's a really special film.

69. V/H/S: Viral (Hulu)

So I've been waiting for this movie to come out on something I could watch it on so I could keep watching this franchise. I know order doesn't matter for this franchise but I still feel like it!

The framing story is about an out of control ice cream truck that causes people to completely lose their shit when they're around it. And then we get stories about an illusionist who finds a cloak and goes from being a loser to being super talented, and also losing his mind in the process. Another story is about an inventor who created a portal that causes another self to appear, but there's obviously something wrong. And then a bunch of skate boarders trying to fight off cultists and skeletons.

So I didn't like this very much. No story really interested me, but I guess the best one might be the framing one, or the illusionist? I dunno, it definitely feels like the weakest of the bunch and I can see why it put the franchise on ice after this. Nothing seems particularly inspired, it feels less creative than the other two entries before it, and I just... felt nothing about these. I'm kind of surprised they put this out with how clearly a step down it is. And that's all there is to that. I just don't recommend it.

For these anthology stories, I like to say what each director has done as well though.

Ice Cream Truck/Framing Story: Marcel Sarmiento, who has nothing else of note to his name.
Dante the Great/Illusionist Story: Gregg Bishop went on to direct the Siren movie, based on the story from V/H/S 1. It was... competent. I didn't think it was particularly great.
Parallel Monsters: Nacho Vigalondo did Colossal, a black comedy about a giant monster being manifested with a lot of big name actors. But he also did something I really enjoyed: Pooka! Maybe I'll watch that sometime.
Bonestorm: Justin Benson and Aaron Scott Moorhead probably have the most success, working on The Endless, Synchronic, After Midnight, She Dies Tomorrow, and Something in the Dirt that releases soon.

Anyway, like I said, this is the weakest in the whole franchise and not much worth your time watching. Completely skippable entry.

I liked Black Swan without really being blown away.

Also, I watched The Lost World: Jurassic Park today when I saw it coming on TV, if that counts as a "horror" movie. Spielberg's direction is at least as good as it was for the first film if not better, and the dinosaurs look a good deal more convincing too. The T. Rex scenes were also even better than the ones in the first Jurassic Park, and I liked Malcolm better here too. Past that, I'm afraid I don't have much of anything good to say about this movie. It's well-paced I guess, but the plot just feels so threadbare and perfunctory, the characters are even less fleshed-out than the ones in the first movie, Goldblum and Moore have no chemistry whatsoever with each other, Moore's character Sarah Harding is handled in all the worst ways possible (save for maybe being a sexist stereotype I guess), the family drama between Malcolm and Kelly is consistently groan-inducing even if Kelly is somehow one of the least dumb characters in the movie, the movie brings up the dinosaurs having formed their own ecosystem on the island and then never bothers to show it, there's none of the sense of awe and wonder of the first film, wow. Almost the epitome of the '90s blockbuster in terms of getting the production right and almost everything else wrong as well as trying to pass shout-outs and homages to other works as enough substance in the same fashion as the likes of Independence Day. Not an awful movie by any means and I feel like a lot of the stuff people make fun about regarding the movie at least make sense in context (the infamous "plot hole" of the T. Rex killing the people aboard the Venture despite being in its cage, for instance, the dead hand on the cage controls implies someone let it out and then lured it back in), but as a sequel it is one heck of a letdown.

70. Alien 3 (Starz)

I forgot how much I just don't like this movie. A disaster.

Alien 3 takes place after Aliens, where Ripley is the lone survivor on an all-male prisoner planet. But a xenomorph is there and Ripley is preggers with a xenomorph baby.

This movie is so fucking boring. I hate it. If it's a bad movie that at least has stuff going on, I can handle it. But this is BORING. They just talk and talk and talk about their own little LORE that nobody cares about, and this film just lacks any of the identity of the first two movies that made it any good.

We have some dumb story where characters who all suck and you don't care about and can't step to a xenomorph in any way are just picked off one by one. And yet they couldn't factor in Newt and Hicks at all? They kill off two characters who people were super invested in off screen? When the whole plot of Aliens was about saving Newt? It would have been easy to have them around, have drama with Ripley having to protect Newt from these rough criminals and stuff. There's so much here and instead... we just get this.

And the action in this movie is so bad and feels like a knock off of an Alien movie, devoid of any of the tension from the first two films. It feels like such an overproduced action movie dreck that cannot let you be enthralled at all with this movie.

But the worst part is how ungodly terrible that the xenomorph looks. This CGI is just awful, and a few of the other non-CGI scenes with the xenomorph don't look any better. It's amazing what a visual step down this movie is, especially in this hell of brown and tan that is the backdrop.

And yes, this movie was in such hell when it was being put together, and David Fincher has disavowed the movie. Who could blame him? It's awful and it's amazing this movie got made at all with how much went wrong with making it.

So yeah, Alien 3 sucks. It's astonishing how much you forget it sucks too. And I always laugh at the last scene of the film because it looks so silly.

71. Scream 2 (Paramount+)

I have always really enjoyed this franchise. Something about tearing down this genre while also shocking people with it has always been a delight.

Scream 2 is about Sidney Prescott now in college with Randy, but there's a new killer afoot, and she's trying to find out the identity again and save herself from being killed!

So this one definitely hits you with a lot of subversion, and I think it's great the way it does it. I remember being STUNNED when I first watched it when one character dies early on, and then being so sad when another one dies later. Wes Craven had this down to a science how to hit you with this.

As for the plot itself... Well, I don't think it's quite as strong as the first film. There's something very special with the first movie that feels so hard to capture again. But I still really enjoy how this one plays out. They lead you to believe it could be one of many characters who are the killer as time goes on, and you can buy into most of them.

I enjoy the extended chase scenes and murders in this one quite a bit too though. The opening is still a great scene. The ending sticks out as something I really enjoyed. What I love about the franchise as a whole, and something they manage to do really well most of the time, is that it all feels real. The killers aren't perfect, the people aren't perfect in ways that make sense. I will never not love the killers just stumbling over shit like clumsy assholes in the chase.

It's just a great franchise, and I think most everything lands extremely well. I have no complaints about it, but I just don't think it's as compelling as the first film. Absolutely worth the watch though.

72. REC (Tubi)

It has been a minute since I've watched REC. I think it's definitely a really special movie.

REC is about a late night reporter following a fire patrol to a house where a woman was screaming in her apartment. After someone gets injured, they try to leave when they find it has been quarantined off entirely and nobody in the building can leave now.

I'll get my one complaint out of the way. With a lot of these found footage movies, they waste so much fucking time establishing their characters at the beginning. I hate how much time they spend in that fire station to set everything up and it's entirely skippable.

Okay, bad out of the way, now onto the good. This movie is a horrifying and real look at this sort of zombie outbreak kind of deal. The realness of how scary it all is just permeates through this movie, along with the sudden panic everyone has. I love witnessing how everything escalates and how they try so hard to make an escape without the feds killing them dead.

And man does it ever keep surprising and terrifying you with this stuff. Just awful, awful stuff continually happens and it's hard to keep track of at times.

And while all of this is good enough, when the movie gets to it's final act, it gets all the more chilling and insane. I've always loved how they add just more detail you didn't need to hear. Just a little bit more unhinged reasoning behind it all. And then the last thing they have to deal with? So incredibly well done. Just so well done. And of course, the ending is just iconic and sticks with you.

As far as found footage goes, this is up there as one of the best. Definitely worth checking out if you want to see one of the best this genre has to offer.

James Marsden and Katie Holmes were really in this movie early in their career and I've never heard about it, and I'm sure they probably wish nobody heard of it.

Cyclops moves to a new town where there's a club where all the kids act like weirdos. The Donut Lord then realizes there's more nefarious things going on and tries to figure it out.

It's brainwashing.

I don't care about spoiling this film since it's profoundly awful. The drama sucks, the acting sucks, the story sucks. I got so bored watching this, even with the one cool janitor character with good lines. It's outrageously nonsensical and I disliked my entire time watching this.

I mean, high school brainwashing. Okay. There's potential. But they could not pull off this script and nothing felt cohesive and it was all just such a complete mess that I have a hard time believing anyone could actually have fun with this movie. None of the characters feel interesting. Just... ugh. Waste of time watching this. It is saved from a 0 score because that janitor character is kind of cool. But aside from that, this is just a terrible Stepford Wives knock off.

74. The Hills Have Eyes (1977) (Shudder)

Jumping into another classic Wes Craven film.

The Hills Have Eyes is about a family on vacation in the desert and a bunch of weirdo mutants come to kill them among other things.

I never liked the remake, which is why you haven't really seen that pop up in these lists before. I don't really want to watch it again. But I did want to see how the original was. Maybe I'd like that more. I did, but I still didn't love this movie.

This one is at least a little more interesting, and it draws you in a lot better. And obviously the directing is a hell of a lot better too. It's more or less the same story, but it's just... better. It really does seem confusing why they remade it in the first place with such obvious downgrades to it.

The directing was probably the thing I was more interested in. Wes Craven has a certain style that I kind of love to watch every time. I think the mutants are all kind of clownish and didn't really care for them, but I think they work better simplistic instead of going over the top with how they look in the remake. There's something to people who just look like people just fucking weird and deformed rather than the obviously fake shit.

There are good moments and good ideas here, but I feel like there's also a lot of downtime here. I think that the movie is a little bit too long, and some scenes go on for too long. But I think this might have had a lot more of an impact back in the day than it did rewatching it nowadays.

This movie simply isn't for me, but I appreciate it well enough. I dunno if I recommend it to folks though unless you're just trying to watch all Wes Craven's work, or are fascinated in how well this is directed.

75. Coming Home In The Dark (Netflix)

This is a meandering sort of nihilistic movie, but I think I kinda liked it.

Coming Home In The Dark is about a father, wife, and two sons on a road trip that get accosted by two men with guns. Something terrible happens and it turns out the men have a vendetta against the father.

This movie felt long at times, while also being an interesting short burn kind of film. As the story unfolds, it becomes more interesting, but never interesting enough to blow me away. It's a sort of "random acts of terribleness" film, in a way, but it never really feels justified to go to the lengths we see the movie go.

This movie does get more clever than it probably needs to be at times, but again not in a way that blows me away. There's some clear thought placed into this. But by the time we're at the end, I felt myself not really caring about the outcome. And then the outcome was... not too satisfying?

I dunno, if it's something that interests you, check it out. But you don't need to actually check it out.

76. Rosemary's Baby (Paramount+)

It's been so long since I watched this movie, and I feel like I've never seen the whole thing. But it's a classic for a reason.

Rosemary's Baby is about a couple who befriend some friendly elderly neighbors, and after a strange dream, Rosemary wakes up pregnant. The couple seem a big controlling with taking care of her, and the pregnancy is giving her terrible pain.

This movie has some tremendous acting in it. I think that's really the highlight of it all. The drama is carried by a lot of the acting here and it's really just so strange to witness at times. Mia Farrow does a tremendous job as our lead, going through all the steps of joy, panic, annoyance, anger, and paranoia. Shoutouts to the actress that plays Minnie, their one neighbor, as well. She cracked me the hell up with her mannerisms the whole film. Great stuff there. And Guy's actor also did great.

It's a film that edges you forth with some grim, gaslighting, terrifying stuff, and it's rather unsettling. The one dream she has is a completely unsettling moment too, and it never really reaches that point again. Towards the end of the movie, you're as disturbed as Rosemary is, and while it feels predictable at times, it's done so well to keep you into it.

The ending is outstanding and it goes bonkers to all of your wildest fears. As it's all unveiled, they really do a great job going over the board with it. It's a terrifying situation that sticks with me.

It's a classic for a reason, and I highly recommend watching this. Also, they're making a prequel movie for this soon!

77. 47 Meters Down (Hulu)

We're got ourselves a shark horror. Perhaps the spookiest animal of them all.

47 Meters Down is about two sisters who go diving in a shark cage to see some sharks, but then the thing breaks and they fall deeper down and are stranded with sharks there and minimal air! They must survive in time to get rescued.

This one was pretty good. I find in these sort of movies where I have no grasp of literally anything they're doing, like deep sea diving and shark cages, I get more interested in that than the actual horror itself. Because I get sharks, but I don't get everything they were talking about and doing, and I find that much more interesting!

Horror movies: for education.

Mandy Moore does a good job in this film being a terrified diving gal, but I just didn't find myself as interested in a lot of the panic and problem solving. I don't know what it is, it just never grabbed me. I think honestly I enjoyed something like The Shallows more where it's just Blake Lively and a Steven Seagull that I did this, with a similar concept. It just didn't feel like as much about all of this has been nearly as interesting.

That said, it has a good ending with a solid twist. I enjoyed that much a lot, when the action on that back-end was ramping off. I just don't know that I enjoyed the rest of the movie nearly as much. But if any of that interests you, I recommend watching it.

78. Escape Room: Tournament of Champions (Starz)

I bet these people are so pissed they released this during the pandemic and can't cash in on this now.

Escape Room 2 is about the two survivors from the first film getting caught in another series of wacky escape rooms with more folks who survived their games before. They must escape.

So this one takes most of what was actually more interesting in the first one regarding drama and people in it for themselves and removes that to focus more on the zany escape rooms we have now. They're bigger and better and I just do not care because I think watching a movie about contrived Super Escape Rooms is so dumb but here we are.

But seriously, the lack of any good drama here just loses me. They all get along and want to do their best and nobody has a secret past that's unveiled or anything. So it's just... not really interesting. Not interesting at all. Unless you were fucking hyped for wacky escape rooms then I guess this is for you (which I'm sure was for most folks watching this).

There is a late game twist that is awful and hilarious and comes out of nowhere for seemingly no reason. Two folks die in what I thought were easily avoidable deaths that I immediately considered and was losing my mind when they didn't do what I thought they should do avoid death and just accepted it. And the ending is just insane and absurd.

Yeah, I did not like Escape Room 2. Anything good from the original was gone for more overproduced BS. Do not recommend unless you are a total slut for escape rooms.

79. Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (HBO Max)

This movie sucks so fucking much.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 6 is about Fredy, having murdered every teenager but one, and leaves him alive to bring back more kids to Springwood for him to murder and then he does some murders on them.

I cannot handle how awful this film is. Freddy is the most cartoon character he's ever been and he's just not even funny in this one. It's literal Looney Toons but with claw murder dream man. It sucks how much they just made him this terrible comedy guy.

Every death here is the worst shit ever and completely awful. The plot has secret Freddy children inexplicably, convenient amnesia, DREAM DEMONS, and Springwood literally having no children in it anymore.

Nothing about this is good, funny, or entertaining. I had a terrible time watching this. I do not need any pathetic attempts at LORE in this franchise anymore. I don't need to see any awful characters in here anymore. I don't get how they continually fail this franchise so badly. In 7 years they shat out six movies and only two of them were any good. And then they tried a reboot 12 years ago and failed there too. Completely pathetic handling of this franchise.

I don't know what they will do with this franchise now. Word is they have most recently pitched a movie and a TV series on HBO Max. I just hope they can get this franchise going on the right track again.
