Am I supposed to get high to listen to them or something? I've heard that was part of the "experience" of Pink Floyd and I'm just not that person.

Pink Floyd is psychedelic rock. That doesn't mean you need to be intoxicated to enjoy it. Common mistake tbh. Don't feel bad.

You more than likely enjoy psychedelic sounds, imagery, and shows from a number of bands already.

Including The Beatles and 99% of modern pop

I remember listening to the first two songs off Dark Side when I was like 15 and giving up on the band for a good year or two. At the time, I had just discovered Nirvana and Guns N' Roses, which had become my favorite bands and set an expectation of energy levels I assumed was fairly standard with other rock bands.

So try listening to an album in full when you are not feeling high on adrenaline and when you have 40 minutes to listen from start to finish. Some of the best parts are often buried in the middle somewhere and, in Dark Side's case, really come together at the end. If the spacier stuff is really a big turn off, there are probably a good few songs off the Wall you could dig.

Everything points to me liking Pink Floyd, but I just don't. I like all the bands that are compared to them, and the ones that are offshoots to their style. I like progressive rock and metal in general. But I just can't enjoy Pink Floyd. They're so damn slow and sleepy, it's like I'm gonna fall asleep when I listen to them. The drummer is the slowest, laziest drummer ever, but people say he's amazing, and then I just don't get it. Like I'm being gaslit on a large scale or something.

Oh and I like psychedelic rock too. But to me that's something more like My Sleeping Karma. Something that has energy and action.

Here, fellow Floydian fans, have this raw ass unfinished post in the spirit of our favorite group!

Disclaimer: I can't speak for a word of the message below, and it's probably rife with the most offensive and insulting mistakes one can make in this capacity, but hey.... Maybe you'll find a gem somewhere in-between the lines or something like that

Gilmour/Waters era Pink Floyd (what most of us fans/followers/listeners listen to) is 110% psychedelic rock, and it is arguably the only straight-up psychedelic rock band to gain any real lasting mainstream attention as an act that remains relevant as ever. Maybe because they play "real music" ;) just kidding, but also not really. Not sure how to describe psychedelic rock off the top of my head. Long, freeform jams. Something like EDM before there was EDM, tbh. As good for an artist looking for a new headspace as it is for a "dumb college kid" looking to go to a big crazy rock show. Lol

What I mean is that this idea of "psychedelic rock" might be distracting you from even attempting to enjoy the music. Because you don't understand the mentality of psychedelic rock, even though I'm sure you could appreciate it. Dream imagery + prophetic imagery and you've pretty much got it. Something that tries to touch your soul and paints an image in your mind. That's all. "Drugs are good" is like pretty far from the message I get from PF. That's why stuff like Alice in Wonderland and Wizard of Oz really click with the fanbase, and so many Metal guitarist openly cite Floyd as an influence. It's more about the music and humanity than anything.

However, if you've ever listened to the same stupid Queen/Beatles song on repeat over and over again for like 2 hours just because the stupid ambience at the intro gave you chills and made you imagine you were in a Hitchcock movie, then you probably know where we're coming from. Pink Floyd came in to popularity as a retrospective and a bit of a parody on actual 60's psychedelic rock and their main theme tends to be the evils of the music industry. I don't think the message is usually "sit down and listen to this while you're intoxicated" but there is plenty of stuff made by them with that in mind too, so.... It's complicated lol.

Nah

Although it can be difficult or aversive for a person to get into psychedelic rock if you don't understand some of what that's about. If you've ever sat there and just listened to the same song over and over again on repeat tho, then you probably have a pretty good idea of where they/we are all coming from here. Most Pink Floyd really pushes for the audience to have an epiphany and make the world a better place tho, or just to feel something, or connect with themselves. The fact that it's so attached to psychedelia is interesting, because I don't think it's much different from Queen, for example. The stories. The provocative emotions. The musicality, etc. So

Same with bar/blues music. if you've never seen anything like that or you aren't into rock. It's gonna sound like junk at first in most cases. Right? You can cut the drugs out of the equation, but without the sex and drinking, rock loses a lot of its steam. Not a violent or aggressive or moody broody person either? There goes the rest of that steam lol. Pink Floyd tends to be reflective on that fact after their frontman went basically nuts during the band's early years before they became a really really big global hit thing. So, if you like to go on little journeys in your head while chilling or walking and listening to music, or you have an appreciation for philosophical anti-authoritarian/evils of rock music/the industry and finding a melding point between introspection and all those other ideas while having a distinct, memorable, and fulfilling musical identity? Then Pink Floyd might be for you! I dont think it's music that endorses drugs or anything, and I'm stone sober most of the time I listen to it. Their sound anticipated and accompanied everything from metal to electronic dance. They were one of the first bands to do a big light/screen/smoke show and that idea evolved on to become The Wall which is practically a stageplay with how elaborate it gets. It's music about being smart (or dumb), realistic (or a dreamer), and how drugs actually ruin lives (or open minds), and
But that is how a lot of people are introduced to Pink Floyd, and a lot of the music is built around that experience. A lot of the music is also built directly against that experience, especially post-Roger Waters' departure from the band. The classic stuff (The Wall, Dark Side of the Moon, Animals, Wish You Were Here, etc) is great in general but the provocative

Meddle came before Dark and The Final Cut after The Wall. Both dont get mentioned as often but are pretty great bookends to the Gilmour / Water days. Umugumma before Meddle, but its inique as its a retread / fresh release of the Cid and Water days to the Gilmour / Water days. Gotta love the Cid era to really appreciate that one.

Pink Floyd isnt just one sound. Thats one of the magical things about that band; each album truly has its own identity and sound.

A person can dislike all of it because its Floyd, regardlessbut if youre actually looking for something to speak to you, you have a wide net. Sample each album, but know, like others have said, theyre album artistsif thats even a thing.

My .02. I fell head over heels back in the mid 80s when I was in the army. Got ALL the tapes. Lol.

My friend got me a bootleg of a live concert in England. Had 3 half hour songs; One of these Days, Echoes and Fat Old Sun from Atom Heart Mother. God I loved that live version of that song. One of the best Floyd songs I ever heard. Lost the tape years ago.

Oh, and I like the Gilmour Floyd too. Its different from all the rest and also different from one anothercept theres more Gilmour guitar in Division Bell. And a lot more Fuck you, Roger! too. :)

just picking random singles and going for it probably won't give you the effect most people who enjoy the band get out of it because all of PF's most recognizable material that stood the test of time are very much songs that journey into one another. Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall and Animals in particular don't feel quite right when you isolate stuff from them. It's a lot of trippy mid tempo stuff that crests into soaring soulful guitar solos or impactful vocal passages that don't really come off as all that interesting perhaps without context

You definitely don't need to be high to enjoy the band but they're a fusion of prog and psychedelic, which isn't exactly a genre that's easy to just hop into radio hits for and get the big picture. I'm not trying to be snobby either because Pink Floyd is a very accessible example of both of those genres, but it is definitely a more thoughtful kind of music that expects you to chill out and just listen for awhile, which is where the weed stuff comes from. if that doesnt sound appealing maybe its just not for you

When you're listening to Pink Floyd, just remember that they're not like other bands. Their music is incredibly artistic, almost to the point where you have to be paying complete attention to them to even remotely understand them. I remember listening to a song on Dark Side of the Moon (though I can't remember what it was), where I thought a song was absolute bollocks during the listen. Then, I closed my eyes for a second, and all of a sudden the song had an entirely new meaning. It was insane the way Pink Floyd could just become something so different when you take a look into the music.

Another thing you should note about Tool is that it's easy to get a headache listening to them. Not because they're a bad band, but because of how many ideas their music is riddled with and how complex they are. Soon enough your head will fill to the brim and the rest will just sound like noise to you. Just turn it off and give it a listen the next day.

If you don't like the music, you'll definitely at least enjoy reading through the lyrics, and picking apart the song itself and all of the artistic values that go into making it the complexity that it is.
