someone I worked with once told me that BBT is basically blackface but applied to nerd culture

Yeah. I agree that something racist can be compared to nerds doing nerdy things.

I wonder what @adjl thinks... he hasn't logged in since the 7th. I hope he's ok.

Perfectly fine, I was just away, only had space to bring my work laptop, and couldn't be bothered trying to operate here on a phone. I got back yesterday, the day after Fiona did quite a number on my city, but I came back to my power having been restored, internet being fine, and no damage to anything of mine (including the car that I left parked on the street under a tree), so I'd consider myself pretty lucky.

As for BBT, I enjoyed the first couple seasons well enough, but lost interest. I've heard it called "nerd blackface," and while I think that paints it as being more offensive than I consider it to be, it's not an inaccurate assessment: It has a tendency to try way too hard to shoehorn as many nerd stereotypes into the characters as possible for the sake of constantly reminding viewers that the characters are nerds, which gets kind of grating and that makes the whole thing pretty one-note.

I think that by the time you've watched the first couple of seasons, you've watched pretty much every gag the show has to offer, and there aren't terribly many to begin with.

Well, glad you're ok at least, adjl. I met a Fiona once and she was nice. These hurricane versions not so much.

it's pretty popular to hate TBBT. I imagine in the same trend, most who hate it have never actually watched it, outside of clips. It has some good jokes and some real heartwarming moments, but is ultimately a middle of the road show. I'd say after season 6 the series just got old, like every long running sitcom.

Can't stand Sheldon at all. I suppose it's a testament to Jim Parsons acting ability and the writers skill, but he was completely unlikable.

Anyone like that I would have no use for in real life.

yeah i didn't get the popularity of the big bang theory either. Any of you were smallville fans, though?

As you know, I was/am a smallville fan, still think Micheal was the best lex ever. Fell off for me after he left the show and when I rewatch it, I often end up stopping around season 6 or 7 because of that.

Meanwhile BBT was meh for me, good enough to watch through it, but not enough to rewatch through it basically. I didn't really "like" any of the characters. I often found Sheldon annoying/stupid but it did have some things that I found interesting/fun that they would get involved in etc.

Much prefered Seinfield "no soup for you!!" but I did make it through all of BBT and that requires at least a semi-decent show (based on what I like of course).

Smallville on the other hand I really enjoyed all of the first time (Even after season 6) and have fully rewatched it at least 3 times, and partially (through lex leaving) a few more. Tis my favorite superman tv series, and still one of my favorite series all together.

I could not watch much if the series as it was on a channel we did not get at the time, but what I did see of it, he stole the show as Lex, made it his show.

John Cryer has done a better job than I expected him to, hope he reprises on Superman and Lois. (Though he is technically trapped in the phantom zone maybe, they are divorcing the show from the Arrowverse)

There are a lot of reasons to not really enjoy BBT.

Unrealistic is one complaint I've seen here, I can't say I disagree. It really felt like an exaggeration of nerd culture to really ham it up for a boomer audience, while trying to play to the crowd that "got it." It was nudging and winking at two demographics, and the result was often a mix of annoyance and unfunny pandering bordering on cringe. I will give it its dues in that it went a little deeper than surface level...But in doing so it felt like it was also scrubbing it up a lot with its characters, most of which are irritating as fuck on some level. Then again, that could cut either way, some nerdy dudes are irritating as fuck IRL too.

idk, it was cool to see the writing dare to deep dive pop culture like that, but everything else that followed was duplicitous and obnoxious. I think I maybe I got a couple of chuckles out of it but most times it was on I'd just find something else.

Never did VHS/DVD etc for shows in my whole life, even before you could watch anything online. Now adays there is really no reason since any show you want to watch is available online easily pretty much.
