Do you agree with this statement?


At the meeting, which Pichai held in New York with a live audience of Googlers, employees asked the CEO why the company was nickel-and-diming them by restricting travel and cutting entertainment budgets and perks, especially at a time when the company had record profits and huge cash reserves.

Pichai spoke about how cost-cutting affected fun at work. He referenced the days when Google was small and scrappy in his attempt to justify changes to the companys culture and perks.

I remember when Google was small and scrappy, Pichai said at the meeting, as reported by CNBC. Fun didnt always we shouldnt always equate fun with money. I think you can walk into a hard-working startup and people may be having fun and it shouldnt always equate to money.

Fuck Google. Glad I turned them down last year. They low balled me and bragged about how much their stock was worth. That equity they offered is now worth about a third less a year later. Now theyre cutting perks. Google is well known to work their employees to the ground and its because of the perks and equity. Now they just want to treat their employees as pure slave labor.

Google employees get paid like 2x even 3x more then the average person working the same job. Their campus is ridiculously decked out with shit people don't really need like chefs, 20x game systems of each modern console, and just so extra.

Tbf tho, they need it because Google expects them to nearly live there.

according to rumors from within the company, the current lot of engineers is more incompetent than their predecessors, and its ongoing success stems from the power of the technologies and systems the company built years ago

edit: not to sound like i'm sympathetic with what the ceo had to say though; cutting accommodations and benefits really is not going to help it recruit talent

The bigger signal those is that the tech market is starting to crash. Meta, Google, Amazon, Netflix are all having hiring freezes, layoffs, cutting costs, etc. Hold on to your butts.

The cost of living is high for a reason, its one of the best areas in the country. Places most could only dream they could live, cost be damned.

And they're hours aren't anything special, I work 60-70 on average along with countless others. And get fuck all for luxery perks working for a dirty cement plant, while living in one of the top 10 worst city's in the country.

But I'm supposed to feel bad and join them and you in outrage over this petty crap? Lol, no.

And yes, I'm aware of the tech crash. But no shit? The market is second to none during growth periods but always crashes during recessions. So no shit they're downsizing and cutting back perks. The good times came, they went, and these employees should be grateful it's perks being gutted instead of them.

yeah, lol, I find it hard to have any sympathy for them. their paychecks are probably around 4 times or more higher than what a person making 15 an hour makes. how is that not enough of a perk? what about people who are getting ground to the bone for peanuts and zero perks? these people need some fucking perspective outside of their tech bubble.

There are different kinds of jobs. A software engineer making 90k+ is the person getting the perks, not the janitor working there.

Cost of living is high because these employees demand such high salaries. One reason anyway.

Except, you see, the upper middle class is not the enemy of the 1%. They are not your friend at all, either. The upper middle class has nothing to gain from changing things because they benefit from how things are now. It's a pretty useless term but look up "petite bourgeosie", such people are actually complicit in how things are.

No one making 120k a year is going to want things to change if it means they make less, and equity suggests they would in fact make less money.

That just depends on your terms. A lot of people think being paid well IS being treated well. The kind of perks at issue here are literally perks you get for being in a special group of people. If they lose those perks they might shift their allegiance to side with the proletariat.

Some people fully expect their job to be "enjoyable" and that is just not possible for every job so I don't think it has to be a standard at all.
