Do you prefer a traditional work week or a 4 day work week?

If given a choice, I'd take the 4 day work week

Between the two, Im fine with the traditional work week. Plus, its less hours of work per day That said, it doesnt really matter to me much. My schedule is very flexible I just have to get to 80 each week. And once Im past 80, Im saving up extra hours to be used anytime And if I dont use those hours in a year, I get paid for them

I technically work a nine-hour schedule: I take every other Friday off and work 8 hours on my 'on' Friday to get to 80 for the pay period. That was great back when I drove in to work; the long weekend felt more special when it didn't happen every week. I am technically still doing that (today is my off day) but - now that I'm working remotely - it's more hypothetical. I'm more likely to leave the house to do something on my off day, but either way I mostly just make sure the work is getting done: Friday or otherwise.

Currently on a 4 day, that'll change to 5 in a few weeks
Good news - only have to work 8 hours a day, the bad news - only 2 days off :/

On my work days I don't really do anything extra outside of work regardless of how long my shift is. So I'd rather load up my work days and get more days off than to spread my work days out further

The four-day work week is a scam. At least in the way that they implement it in the US.

You still have to work the same number of hours, but you just get longer days. Sure you get one extra day off, but usually you need that whole extra day to recover from working 10-12+ hour days the entire week.

And so it basically goes like this: After factoring in commute time, potential overtime, time for things like sleep, eating, and even the basic level of self-care, you don't have time to do anything outside of work on your work days. So there's no life outside of work for 4 days of the week, then you spend a whole day of recovering from that, and then the normal weekend. It's a worse life than the 5-day work week, because at least in that instance, you have a little bit of time before and after work each day.

I've had multiple friends/ loved ones who have had their companies go to a 4-day work week or the option to do it. All of them either switched back or regretted the decision of switching to it for the above mentioned reasons.

The way 4-day work we should work, is everybody works 4 days but the days are not any longer. Due to increased worker productivity, everybody gets paid the same. Again, if worker wages kept up with productivity, and wealth wasn't hoarded by the top 1%, we could all be working 4 days per week or less and getting paid more than we are currently making.

I'd love a 4 day work week where I got paid the same amount of money in a cycle and didn't have longer days.

Unlikely, but that is what I would want, AND my job I could very easily do my work in 4 days. I'd say I usually only have about 5 hours of actual work a day. I could up it to 6 hrs over 4 days and still get everything I need done

Give us a 4-day, 32-hour, week that pays well enough to support actually living, and it'll be good. Gods, I'd like a three-day weekend including Wednesday, just to get away from the Wednesday crowds at my job while retaining the other two days off for whatever else.

The problem is, presumably everyone else at your job feels the same way. So short of closing entirely, someone at your job is still getting screwed over.

And if you just closed, all you'd really do is drive that business to other days anyway.

Most of us, now, are already screwed over by being short-staffed, and the vast majority of short-staffing being due to insufficient pay, bad hours, and undue stress from the worst of the worst people being our customers each and every day (and even worse still on Wednesdays).

Making it 4-day weeks with reasonable pay, for everyone, would entice people to hire on and stick around for more than a month or two at a time.

If I make enough money to get around, I would be fine either way.

A permanent 4-day week might be something I would consider once I have kids. "Papa days" are a thing nowadays.

I'm not disputing any of that. I was just pointing out that, even if everyone only worked a 4-day week, someone is still going to have to work Wednesdays, so it's still going to be a shit day for someone.

Though I suppose you could do alternating work cycles, where some employees work 4 days a week (but get Wednesdays off), while some people work 3 days a week (and work the remaining days, including Wednesday). That way people working on the most stressful day would be balanced out by working less time overall.

Ah, gotcha.

Well, if we contemporary serfs had reasonable pay to live off of, and enough hours with which to actually live on top of errands, chores, or resting, some might be more inclined to optimize those Wednesdays so they're smoother. In the spirit of a corollary, one might argue that the majority of people now arguing against such improvements for the current generations of the workforce are the same people who make Wednesdays dreadful in the first place, so if they became suddenly unable to regress the better parts of civilization--which is to say no longer standing vehemently in the way of things that do or should work--then it's likely Wednesdays won't be the worst day of the week from that point until our own generations become curmudgeonly and past overstayed on all our welcomes. Then I hope the generations Z and after have the sense to cut us off who've lost our own senses before we cycle things back into a situation beneath even the Great Mighty Poo.
