...eat meat? I mean very very rarely will a lion eat a hyena or a leopard etc.....they will usually just kill them and not eat them

Most have some way of fighting back, but primarily that's for escape/defense/disincentive. Imagine your primary food source being something you need to track and hunt down, except now it tracks and hunts you, too. Herbivores typically don't want trouble.

Energy is passed up the food chain. The more links in the chain, the less energy there is to go around.

You get more energy from plants than from meat, but by the time a predator eats you, you burnt some of that off.

Ease of catching the prey probably does play some role. I understand the food chain aspect to when it comes to flavor and energy.

But I recall a comedian pointing out horse meat tastes good but there is a reason we eat cow over it. Caveman went up to horse and hoisted a rock over his head to bash it. Horse neighs and gallops away. So caveman goes to a cow. Does the same thing cow justvmoos and stares at him
