Everytime I see theater numbers showing its #1 some people complaining that its glorifying slavery and that its woke blah blah. Know better than to listen to these people, but whats the origin of it all?

Its romanticizing slavers. Though Im sure there arguments to be made that the same applies to a lot of the other media we consume, so I guess it kind of depends if its just selective complaining or actually that bad.

Did some quick reading, and it portrays the main tribe as more heroic than they were IRL, where they were very big participants of the slave trade and also practiced human sacrifice.

I only heard about this today, but apparently the downplaying of the slavery stuff is the main reason Lupita Nyong'o dropped out of the movie

  1. White guys online of course cried WOOOOOOKEEEE because TMN
  2. SJW's cry about glorifying slave traders(the particular people focused in the film were massive slave traders in reality)

ultimately, it's because it's a story about African women.

yes, they could have been terrible people, and this story might be sanitizing the atrocities that they committed (idk, I haven't seen it), but you don't see this outrage when movies about: Vikings, Romans, knights, Samurai, medieval Asia, medieval Europe, etc. come out.

people want to gatekeep the kind of black stories that are told.

It's not politically correct to make historical movies where black people are the protagonists. There, I answered your question honestly.

This is accurate.

I saw it btw. They don't ignore the fact that this nation committed slavery, but they make it seem that the leader of the women warriors (Viola Davis) was anti-slavery, and while she is a fictional character, this would be unlikely based on what they were known to have done. They also make it seem like the king (not fictional) is moving away from being involved in slavery, when it is known that he only briefly considered that, and then doubled down.

I still liked the movie though.

So complaints are legit, but they dont get the same pass every other violent culture has gotten throughout movie history, because current "anti woke" culture. Got it. See where this going and coming from. No wonder its mostly right wing YouTube channels bashing it.

I think it might be a bit complicated.

like, they were most likely a violent unit of a country's military, but I've seen people post different sources, for and against, that I'm not sure who to believe.

there's a topic on the movie board that has people arguing on both sides with sources:
