Question

I get what Square has been trying to do over the last 10-15 years, but let's face it. Action-rpgs just aren't their forte. What they do best is turn-based, medieval/sci-fi fantasy jrpgs. FF7, FF9, FF10, FF6 are the best FF. There just hasn't been anything that has topped these games. They need to go back to this formula.

Meh. Final fantasy 7 remake on hard is the most fun I ever had with a mainline final fantasy game's battle system, right next to FF10-2's, FF10's, FF6's and FF9's.

While FF15's wasn't all that they nailed the action ATB hybrid with FF7 remake's.

Nah. Final Fantasy is the action series now and Dragon Quest is the turn based series. Easy.

I don't really care one way or the other. There are plenty of turn based rpgs out there if that's what I'm in the mood for. I don't need that from Final Fantasy specifically. Plus, I like their action rpgs.

FF7RE was a good balance.
I liked FF13's gameplay, but it has a bad stigma.
I think it's fine keeping the old school stuff to side and mobile series.

hard mode FF7R was a great and fun challenge.

ATB/Turn Based combat just doesnt offer the same challenge IMO.

As a FF fan I look forward how they can twist and turn classic stuff. Sometimes it fails hard sometimes it works. If I want consistency I play Tales or Dragon Quest.

As someone that hasn't really enjoyed the franchise since FFX...no, they shouldn't.
For one, that's ignoring that the series hasn't been actually turn based more often than not. And secondly, I feel like they should evolve. But I also feel like Square Enix shouldn't experiment with how the series evolves in main entries. Both FFX-2 and FF7R felt like a natural evolution of active gameplay combined with turn based menus.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love turn based and ATB systems. I just don't believe a 3 decade+ old series should adhere to them like a religion. There's room for diversity and improvement within a franchise. And I feel like FF7R has shown the way forward in those terms

Kingdom Hearts?

Kingdom hearts is great.

But maybe It's not just the combat...it's the way everything is set up in the older games. You have great narratives and cutscenes, along with an interesting cast of diverse characters. Then you have the locations and settings. They all just fit together. The way you interact with the world. The way the camera is set up to show a cinematic view. The overworld of each game. The exploration and then the airship travel at the end. The newer games just don't have that magic.

They got the formula right with FF7 REmake. Also they said that in order to justify these games budget they have to appeal to a wider audience. Hence the ditching of turn based.

Yeah. I feel like Dragon Quest is where they cater to the crowd who doesn't want to move into new territory.

Im glad they started switching it up with FF. Especially since they're actually finally finding ground with it.

I'd be happy if they at least alternated the game styles. Do a turn based one, then an action RPG, then back to turned based, repeat. Or just have 2 separate teams working on games.

I guess with KH they been trying to capitalize on that success but nothing they've done besides FF7R has been up to par FF wise. Just seems weird that all these years later and they just double down on it instead of just trying to make another game in the style that made the series a household name.

If they used X-2's battle system speed with XIII's characters moving around the battlefield it could work. But if they had characters standing around punching bags it wouldn't work in HD.

Eh, Idunno. While I don't have a problem with turn based as a whole I just don't enjoy it as much as I used to. I don't think they should completely abandon turn based combat but I also think they should be free to do what they want with it.

After over 30 years I feel like they deserve the opportunity to explore and try different things even if some people don't like or agree with it, and hopefully if/when they do make a Final Fantasy with turn based combat they find a new innovative way to implement it.

It's a hybrid where you use a single button to do basic attacks rather than a menu. Those help fill your ATB bar which allows you to use a classic menu where you can select actions for your characters.
And it even has a Classic Mode that comes remarkably close to the original ATB system
