It was fun killing your friends and the missions were a good time. I 100%'d that shit back in the day and really don't have any desire to do that again, but I might torment my kid with proxy mines for an afternoon.

It may well be the game which has aged the worst in the entire history of gaming.

Back in the day, it was great. Now that the genre has been significantly refined, it feels almost unplayable.

It was an amazing movie to game game. You had all the levels straight from the movie. You have all the fun mission based objectives. The music was great. The gameplay was fun. Unlocking cheats by speedrunning is a lot of fun, imo, and no one has really made anything like it since. It's just a sweet ass game

It was like the first truly big console FPS. Something you could plug in and have your friends kill each other with relative ease. Before Goldeneye, if you wanted to play multi-player in an FPS you had to like LAN-party it. It was fairly limiting. Goldeneye opened up the FPS genre to a much broader market.

But yeah, its gameplay wasn't even all that refined for its time, especially when compared to its PC contemporaries. And it certainly doesn't hold up anymore outside of nostalgia.

Nostalgia.

I also played the absolute bullshit out of it for its time with my brother and two nephews so I have a lot of great memories with it. The gameplay definitely does not hold up these days.

Perfect dark is a much better game and we all bought that on re-release for the xbox 360....going down nostalgia lane is fun for about 45 minutes, but then that feeling of "wow......it did not age gracefully" hits, lol

I remember reading in Nintendo Power or something, they used actual set blueprints from the movie which is pretty neat.

If it got a real remaster and not a remake with dual analog controls I think people could fall in love with it all over again. It did wonders for Perfect Dark.

Perfect Dark is good, it added more modern features like alternate firing modes such as disarming for fists and 3-shot burst for the game's version of the Klobb as well as voice acting and more multi-player modes including co-op.

The counter co-op mode alone in perfect dark was more fun than anything goldeneye had, lol. The alt. fire for guns and stuff like laptop guns was cool.

Man I wish more games would have a similar mode to counter co-op. One of the things I liked about resident evil 6 actually was because of agent hunt.

*Souls series carries that counter co-op torch, so thats nice*.

Controls were fine honestly, at least for the campaign. The aim-assist was so generous that you could get through 99% of the game as long as you were just looking in an enemy's general direction. >__>

That is the main complaint, yeah, but I dont feel like its that easy to dismiss. The reason that modern shooters play the way they do and nobody is making games that play like goldeneye is because modern control schemes are better.

I mean dual analog controls are fine (which you could technically do in Goldeneye) but so are the general controls in Goldeneye. Hell, the strafing with the c buttons is kind of a more enjoyable way to play to me. And the framerate would rarely drop to truly unplayable levels.

For a lot of console players it was the first good multiplayer fps. We had doom on a few systems but I don't recall multiplayer and the console versions where gimped. And why doom is super fun it's also super simple. Golden eye had laying traps actually being able to aim (as wonky as it is it was the best on console at the time iirc)

So nostalgia. It was a 9/10 game for its day. But I'm sure it's aged like milk sitting out in the sun on a summer day

If the N64 controller had a C button set up like the GameCube and was in a comfortable position Ithink more people would be saying that the game aged like wine and not milk.

Nah, you live in bizarro world because you think it isn't. Better graphics, more features, more optimized aiming, better levels, voice acting, blood, responsive AI (injured limbs, shooting guns out of their hands, swapping guns, surrendering), better multiplayer (more levels, bots, more guns, more gametypes, challenges, etc), firing range, counter co-op/regular co-op (with bots too), secondary fire for all guns, better cheats, and more

You're living in nostalgia if you think Goldeneye was better

I still enjoy it but most definitely not on its original hardware.

All Rare titles were too technologically ambitious for that weak 64-bit/8MB RAM console but that's also why they're so still treasured for what they are today.

That's a large part of the problem, IMO. Speedrunning, which is a necessary portion of the game, comes down to abusing aim assist (until you get to the point where aim assist gets in your way), strafing while looking away from the "action", and memorizing a set of controller movements. You don't have to play perfectly to unlock everything, but it's pretty tight.
Try playing as a complete newb, you'll be begging to aim better while strafing. It's why Halo feels like such an upgrade.

I think people are nostalgic towards it because it really was one of the first (along with Mario Kart 64) "pick up and play" multiplayer games.

Yes, the NES had the 4 player adapter, but very few games that were worth playing.

Golden Eye was the kind of game a group of both gamers and non-gamers could get together and enjoy the same game at the same time.

Kinda like the reason why Wii Sports became as popular as it did. Multiple players could play at the same time, and it was so easy, even Grandma knew how to play Wii Tennis.
