For the record, I fully understood the context but most people would think comparing a segment of people to the smell of an unliked sandwich chain is offensive.

But even if it was meant to be a joke, its still punching down which is just mean spirited in itself. Thus its still wrong.

But I can say that people usually hate subways smell cause it tends to linger on you for a good while.

Honestly never got the hate for Subway. Not every subway experience has been positive, but a sheer majority of subway experiences have been a delight.
