I'm from the U.S. and I realize that a trip to the U.K. is expensive, but I kinda wanna see the festivities going on for Charles' coronation. I know I probably can't get in the church where the actual coronation takes place, but maybe in the surrounding areas there will be parties or something like that?

I know I have a few months to think about it and plan if I'm going...most likely I won't because again, money is an issue.

If there is one, it will be at least a year away, The Queen's took 16 months and her uncle Edward's was delayed indefinitely to force him to abdicate.

Charles may be forced to abdicate, the church will likely refuse to work with parliament for setting a date because Charles is a divorcee, married to a divorcee whose husband is still alive; Edward's sin was just marrying a divorcee.

Charles needs three things for his coronation, a progressive Archbishop of Canterbury willing to buck centuries of tradition, a strong government, and the love of the people; he only has one of those things, if that. If the Archbishop does not give the church's consent, they could force abdication in favour of William.

Edward's sin was being a Nazi sympathizer who married an American Nazi sympathizer shortly before a massive global war broke out where England was going to be on the opposite side from Germany. So there was a HUGE motivation on the part of many people in government to use pretty much any pretext to get him the fuck out.

Though just in and of herself, Wallis Simpson was waaay worse than Camilla. She was an American (!) and a commoner (!!), and if you want to talk about living ex-husbands, she had two (!!!). The whole Nazi thing was mostly just the shit cherry on top of the fecal sundae.

Not to mention that the world is a very different place in 2022 than it was in 1936. The Church's stance on divorce in general has radically changed since then, and the exact context of the problem then (that such a marriage could potentially be bigamous) wouldn't actually apply in Camilla's case today.

The main drawback to Charles getting the throne is that a) he's not all that charismatic and people don't like him, and b) people who don't like Camilla mostly don't like her because she's not Diana (and how dare Charles cheat on Diana?! Waaaah). So people have been talking about him stepping aside in favor of William for years... but he doesn't necessarily seem like he's all that overly keen on the idea, and he has nowhere near the impediments standing in his way as Edward did.

If anything, the main question now is whether or not the British want the monarchy to continue at all now that Elizabeth is gone. Plenty of people have been calling for it to be abolished for a while now, and a massive period of discontinuity is going to spur a stronger push in that direction regardless of whether or not Charles or William are on the throne (though the pushback will probably be harder if it's Charles).

At its core, they serve the similar purpose as Batman; they are a symbol that represents the peace, stability and strength of the Commonwealth. Just existing inspires confidence given bonuses for castled Monarchs to allied units.

Nope, never cared for the royal family, i went to London during the queens platinum jubilee (for something totally unrelated) and it was horrible.

Royal weddings and coronations are like the Super Bowl or the Olympics. They're designed to be watched at home. Going to see them in person is a scam, unless you were invited by the people who are throwing it.

The problem is, Charles will bring stability for a generation, William would bring stability for an era; the longer it takes for William to ascend it creates potential exponential threats to him being able to.

They should have the coronation in america.

my parents and grandma are up my ass about how I don't intend to go see the Queen with her being in Edinburgh and I live here now

just.. never really cared about the monarchy. but my mom is like waking up at 5am over there to watch the funeral and crying lol..

Provided our trust in institutions doesn't collapse between now and then, and doesn't that seem unlikely to happen...
