I stopped watching after the show went to shit (so around the mid '90s), but the only thing I know of that establishes their comparable ages at all was the Flying Hellfish episode. And that had Burns being younger because Abe was his commanding officer.

I think we all assumed that and for the same reason, but age is not an indicator of rank; Abe had a hard life so could easily look older then the foppish Burns.

He's generally referred to as being born in the 1800s, even in the early seasons, though it's not entirely consistent. He's also called the oldest person in Springfield a few times.

But that episode is specifically one of the problematic ones because why would he be fighting in WWII in his 50s

Mr Burns should be the oldest person in town by far. Grapndpa Abe is just one little old guy in sea of old people in Springfield

Because shows that go on for that long line that don't have continuity. They always retcon the technology too. Like Lisa getting a smartphone.

they do this a lot in the show, especially with the kids ages.

in the late 90s, early 00s Homer is telling the kids stories about when Bart and Lisa were babies in the early 90swhile the show had already existed back then, and the kids were in the same ages back then

That is the issue with shows that use a floating timeline. I understand why they do it, but cause issues with timelines

There was one episode where Homer found a can of Billy Beer in his concert-going jacket. Billy Beer was only produced in 1977 and 78. Even if Homer was only 17 at the time (as when he sang his version of When I Was Seventeen), that would mean he's at least 61 now.
