Several Hundred years of Established Law and a new PM yet to prove themself; The King needs to show strength and unity and lead his people or his succession will be in threat.

I have long stated that when the Prince of Wales Charles ascends the throne upon the death of his mother, The Queen, that The King will be put into a position where his coronation is withheld under demand of abdication for The Crown Prince William, who will ascend the Throne of England Wales and Scotland as George VII.

It has been a long debate in my family as it has been with the moustaches at the palace who have had decades and also months of planning and scenarios to build off of to create the current London Bridge. I am eager to see how it unfolds.

It has also been a culture shock as for the first time in my life I am now a Kingsman; when I went to bed early this morning I was still a Queensman.

My mother is in hospital and the hospital phone system has shut down, it was returning a message of "This number is not in service" with previous attempts taking minutes for the automated system to answer. I can call in now but it just goes to a black hole again like it was doing earlier before it was saying it was out of service.

What would you suggest though, just not have a state funeral? Or have a private funeral instead? It just wouldnt work, believe it or not a hell of a lot of people actually like the Queen and would want to give her a good send off. King Charles isnt going to be that popular and people likely wont be as fussed about his coronation so you might have a point there.

Im guessing youre talking more about the actual optics of it and less about the practicalities of redirecting funeral money to help with the cost of living because that wouldnt make a difference.

The royal family already gets public money every year so they already have it, theyre not exactly having to ask for more money. So its money that would have been spent on them carrying out their duties anyway. Whether its spent on a state funeral or on refurbing her castles is immaterial.

Empty gestures like that wont help anybody. God knows how much a state funeral costs but Id bet its nowhere near the 14bn that Truss is having to borrow to help with the cost of living, which were going to have to end up paying for ourselves later on anyway. Also the figure should be more like 17.5bn.

Sorry man but trying to redirect money from a state funeral to help the cost of living is a complete fallacy.

yes stop this as well

the point isnt that the money spent is going to solve the uks problems, the point is that the uk is facing a bunch of issues and crises in cost of living and public services and choosing to spend the limited public purse on constant vanity projects rather than invest it in something that needs it is a waste and a slap in the face to the struggling public

i would also bet that but because shes ruled out any sort of windfall tax, we're going to be picking up the bill for this too in a couple of years

Youre cutting off your nose to spite your face because if you take your argument to its logical conclusion and strip away their entire 100m cost, youre ignoring the fact that they would typically bring in more money than this into the same public purse youre trying to put money into, typically 400m-500m. So again this argument is driven more by emotion and surface level gesturing than by anything thatll make a genuine impact.

if youre talking about redirecting public money this argument would make more sense if youre talking about HS2 which is only gonna return half of its 100bn cost. The queen mothers funeral cost 5m, lets say for arguments sake the queens funeral costs 10m. That 10m wont make a dent in the cost of living (again, this is money they already have).

Also the issue with public services isnt lack of money. Weve had governments throw money at the problem and had governments cut budgets. The issue is the way they (the NHS in particular) are inherently run. I dont need to tell you about their agency staff and shit procurement policies. Before we throw more public money at the problem why not make sure the money theyre being given is being used correctly in the first place?

The problem I have is when people go for the easy low hanging fruit (like trying to cancel a 10m funeral to solve a 17bn problem) its easy to lose sight of the actual issue. Oil and gas wholesalers are ripping off the energy distributors. BP and Shell are literally saying they have more money than they know what to do with and the biggest problem you have rn is the queens funeral?

Come on

Im guessing you mean were gonna be picking up the bill for the money shes borrowing, because yeah I actually agree with this. But going back to my previous point, redirecting 10m or so out of the queens funeral will make no difference in addressing this cost.

Windfall tax would be a good idea, and the argument that it deters investment hasnt actually materialised whenever its been imposed in the past so I would say we go for it

completely agree, you're absolutely right about efficient money usage.

i disagree with this, the money brought in via tourism i would argue is not dependent on them being on the throne. the palaces and royal history surrounding the uk will be there to be visited and enjoyed regardless of whether the monarchy actually exists, and hey if noone is living in buckingham palace anymore then we can actually open it up for people to look around in and attract more tourism. the most obvious case study being france where paris is the most visited city in the world. the champs elysses draws tens of millions of visitors annually despite france having been a republic for a long time.

ultimately i think we are just going to have to accept we fundamentally disagree on the royals here bb
