I don't think there's much of a market for them with the AAA publishers. Prolly gonna have to go indie, if you want one.

Lawbreakers looked amazing. Just came out at a time when arena shooters had zero weight in the pro community. I don't think most pro gamers have the skills to handle shooters like quake, and unreal. When they were big gaming wasn't in the tens of millions yet. Or billions for that matter.

However it would be nice to see a resurgence of them. I just don't see it happening.

The very first clan I ever joined was playing on some old Q3 rg instagib servers called Reign in Blood back in 99 2000 range. I was bad and stuck on dial up but did my best anyway lol.

I also played a mod called Weapons Factory quite a bit. It was like team fortress I guess.

Edit
Wild weapons factory is still a thing

Quake at least TDM was extremely hard to camp. Guns had ammo so you tried to control ammo and gun spawn points but these locations are not typically easy to control. Movement at high speed could quickly overwhelm a camper.

This was also the case in with free for all modes too.

I can't speak for other games but I played a metric ton of quake 3 and some of quake 2.

Yeah this is my concern as well. God knows stockholders won't care about the spirit of the game.

I only really played Quake, and I was never good at FPSes, but I always enjoyed arena shooters when I played them.

Nah, considering there's so few people actually expressing interest in arena shooters coming back, I find it totally plausible that most of the people asking for them are the few who play those that do come out

Maybe but I think a lot of people on the internet have a tendency to ask for stuff they're nostalgic over to come back and then not give anything that remotely channels it a chance because it's never going to live up to their memories of it. It's never going to be the same.

All I remember when Lawbreakers came out were people basically celebrating how much of a massive failure it was.

Yeah, that's the other thing.

People make nostalgic blind them to reality. Not just to the quality of games, but to life itself.

You could have the perfect remake. One that 100% captures the spirit and essence of the old game, one that looks and feels better than the original, and made by the same people who made the old game.

That doesn't change the fact that you're no longer a kid. No longer are you that kid playing with your friends during a refreshing summer day without a care in the world.

You're an adult with body aches, a broken spirit over your job and how the world turned out, and a far more limited time to enjoy anything.

Memories can be sweet, but nothing turns back time.

I had a lot of love for those arena shooters, with my favorite actually being the xbox exclusive unreal championship 2, but I do agree with that sad reality that these kinds of games just wouldn't be all that populated nowadays. The skill gap is huge, and putting in the time to be decent at the game is something not a lot of people would be willing to do compared to both younger and older gamers hoping into a game of fortnite, call of duty, apex or something like that.

The gears of war series kind of has that same spirit as the old arena shooters (including the huge skill gap thing), but even the recent releases of that series imo just hasn't been as good as gears of war 3.

I kinda agree about all those old shooters I was so fond of, quake 3, return to castle wolfenstein, unreal championship 2, and gears of war 3 is probably better off being good memories at this point instead of one of these being brought back just for someone to fuck'em up. (Especially gears of war 3. I really don't want to see a remake of this game with all that lootbox crap that gears of war 5 has.)

That's definitely a fair assessment

There does at least seem to be legitimate traction in the revival of classic style fps games though. Doom 2016/Eternal are movement based shooters (much more so Eternal than 2016 tbf) and they got huge accolades and pretty active online for awhile. The New Blood trilogy has generated quite a bit of buzz, with Dusk basically being Quake on steroids

These types of games are definitely not without their dedicated fanbases, even if they're not huge. A game doesn't have to have a million players online for it to be good or successful

I actually unironically think 90s style shooters are more fun than most modern shooters, and the "Boomer Shooter" revival has pretty much only confirmed that for me. Prodeus is the perfect example of why there's more to it than just nostalgia.

And really, in some ways there had been a move back to that style even before the "Boomer Shooter" thing. Titanfall 2 uses a lot of early 2000s mobility conventions.

I prefer objective style stuff (ie control points, KOTH, "push the cart"), but it's the movement options (read: lack thereof) that make me dislike most modern multiplayer games. TF2 is the closest middle ground that still retains a good player base, but TFC's movement is *chef's kiss*.
