So the physical manifestation of darkness in a heart. Whatever the fuck that means. And it causes yet another being to exist.

Holy hell that in itself makes little sense.

I went into it having only played 1 and 2. Figured thered just be some occasional references to what I thought were spin-off games and Id be able to follow it.

From the start I had absolutely no idea wtf was going on. So I watched this recap video and slowly descended into madness:

I played all the games and watched all the movies on the 1.5, 2.5 and 2.8 collections. Granted I had a lot of trouble paying attention to the cutscene collection movies because come on I was there to play games not sit and watch hours long lore dumps with no creative flair in their stage setting. I watched them. I tried, okay.

I was so fucking lost in KH3 and even more lost in Re:Mind.

Most of the problems people have is that they dont play the games between numbered entries or they are the kind of people that skip cutscenes.

The magical mechanics central to the plots of DDD and KH3 convinced me to stop worrying about lore and just go with the vibes. Like there's no part of DDD other than the waking world flashbacks where I know for sure where anyone is or why. And the KH3 DLC is just wild.

I never got into the mobile games because by the time I had a phone that could run UX, the gameplay was too complicated and power-creepy to bother. I know there are cutscene compilations on YouTube, but I don't wanna get invested in all this shit with the black box that won't be opened or identified for ten more games.

It makes sense if you play all the games because the games constantly had things happening that weren't elaborated on until a future release

But even then there's things that don't make sense within the lore of the universe and are stitched together by retcons

Like Riku just handing Kairi a keyblade or Vanitas looks like a teenage Sora when Ventus' heart hadn't been expelled from his body yet

The whole Ventus thing could be explained by the fact that there was still a connection made between Sora and Ventus, thus when Vanitas was basically removed from Ventus there was still a connection that shaped his appearance to look like Sora.

Riku handing Kairi a keyblade wasnt explained for sure.

Well it sounds like you picked the best place to stop. KH2 is the only game in the series whose ending passes for an ending to the story. Every other game just adds more problems to solve and people to save. Also the story does keep getting worse from there, so the sooner you dip out, the better.

Because you are choosing to make it difficult.

Heartless are created by those who lose their hearts to darkness

Nobodies are created when a person with falls to darkness and is the leftover husk.

There's the message in a bottle, but at least everyone is back home at the end, there's no implication that Roxas and Namine need to be freed, and there aren't any Xehanorts waiting to strike. 1, CoM, Days, BbS, DDD, Coded, UX, and 3 all either end with kids lost in space (or possessed or some kind of "dead") or villains gearing up to end the world.

Did you magically forget KH2 had a secret ending that people were theorizing about since day 0 of the launch of the game? The keyblade graveyard with the 3 mysterious people? People freaked out over that. And that the fate of Namine and Roxas was tragic because it was either fade into nothing or live on inside Sora/Kairi? Sure they didn't die, but it's not like they had a great ending

I didn't magically forget, I deliberately disregarded. The BBS teaser didn't explicitly concern any characters we knew about and it was much more an ad than a cutscene for KH2.

And yeah, Roxas and Namine's ending in 2 is sad, but the scene with them between the final boss phases and the final shot of them living through Sora and Kairi definitely played it as a good thing. In 2, all the Nobodies wanted was to be whole again, and this was painted as the way to make it happen. It was only after that when the games decided Roxas and Namine needed to be their own people.

Legit the only way to understand the story completely is to add some head canon to the overall plot assuming what the director meant or would have meant for certain parts of the story.

I don't get the confusion tbh lol. Especially now that you can binge play/watch the whole series so you don't have an information gap due to disinterest/time/separate consoles. The games are all extremely heavy handed with their writing and exposition, they don't do any showing whatsoever; it's all telling. Very repetitive telling. There isn't anything to actually think about. The writers certainly didn't think too hard about their own story, they were more interested in serial escalation and making things seem deeper than they are by having a shit ton of useless characters that all serve as macguffins in some fashion lol.
