one of the usb people tried justifying these stupid versions on twitter saying that it's actually really easy to tell them apart now and

no it's not lol

what is the difference between usb 3.2 gen 2+2 and what it was before it was renamed?

y'know

usb 3.1

usb 4 came out in 2019? cool, it should just be usb 4.1

even their own new naming scheme isn't consistent lmao

go ahead muscles

explain how usb 3.1, usb 3.2 gen 2+2, and usb 4 2.0 are remotely similar with their naming scheme

I'll give you a hint, it's not 4 2.0 to remain consistent in their naming of things. The fact that you think that's what they were going for is why you're dense.

this is the guy who was part of the team that named it

i don't care if you think it's a sick weed ref bro, the official statement for it is what i am basing all of this on, because it's literally the official reason for when they renamed usb 3 originally a few years ago.

and calling it usb 4 2.0 is literally

not it chief

I'm not sure what the issue is. it seems to make sense when I read about it.

USB-C is the connector, USB4 is the protocol which is up to 40 Gbps. USB4 2.0 also uses the USB-C connector and is up to 80 Gbps.

the "gen" thing seems to be different (or at least, more specific). USB4 40Gbps is really USB4 Gen 3x2 (where Gen 3 is 20 Gbps and x2 is dual-lane, so double the speed). (Gen numbers seem to increase as doubles starting from 5. Gen 1 = 5, Gen 2 = 10, Gen 3 = 20.)

these are "modes", and there are at least 4 of them for USB 3.2 and 4 for USB4, ranging from 5-40 Gbps. (this doesn't include USB4 2.0).

USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 is dual-lane 10 Gbps (so 20 Gbps). (Previously USB 3.2 Gen 2x1 was named USB 3.1 Gen 2, which yeah would be confusing.)

I suppose you could say, why isn't "USB4 2.0" called "USB4 Gen 4x2", and that I don't know. Possibly it is; maybe that would be the name of the mode not the name of the protocol. Apparently the spec won't be published till November.

I used to work around this guy years ago who would go on about how 2.0 and 3.0 would change the world. He was very excited. I remember building a board in 2011 and it had 3.0 connections that were blue. And I remember thinking about how they must be too badass to be white. They're blue now. Maybe 4.0 will be red.

I still tell people "remember to use the blue ones for devices that need speed (like drives) and not things like mice", but that's on the way to being outdated info.
