An 89 through 91 reviews hey turns out The Last of Us is still a really good game, but we're at the point of diminishing returns with this remake. Outside of the improved visuals (which already looked good in the PS4 remaster), it's virtually the same game with only some slight gameplay improvements and new modes. The multiplayer mode is gone now though and maybe that caused a bit of dip in scores too. They for sure want that new multiplayer only Last of Us thing they're working on to be the only multiplayer thing in the franchise on PS5.

EGM - 10/10
Sure, this might be the third time that Naughty Dog has released The Last of Us, but its also the most fully realized version. The enhanced visuals and animation bring Joel and Ellies story to life in a way that was previously unimaginable, and the gameplay still holds up, despite not totally catching up to Part II. Whether or not you want to pay to play the same story for a third time is up to you, but that wont change the fact that its better than its ever been.

Player 2 - 10/10
While its certainly disappointing to see The Last Of Us return without its iconic multiplayer, Factions, players are so incredibly fortunate to get to re-experience a game that is widely considered one of the all-time greats, remade from top to bottom, and given the tender love, and care that it deserves. Every pore is as it should be, every texture perfected, and every moment, something to savour. Many will look at The Last Of Us Part I and consider it an unnecessary investment from Sony, the original still looks great but Naughty Dog have pulled off the impossible in making the definitive video game of the last decade, somehow, even better, and in doing so theyve also opened it up to millions of new players, of a variety of needs and levels of experience. It turns out that you can improve upon perfection.

Vgames - 9.5/10
I'm sorry - I'm not joining the whole "70 USD" debate and instead focusing on the remake itself which is still the same game from 2013, but probably the best way you can play it. The new graphics and animations are simply superb and the game does provide some incentive to play it again, which is always welcomed. In short, The Last of Us Part I is simply a great game - though if you had enough of The Last of Us, it's really not a must-buy title.

IGN - 9/10
A gorgeous and well-honed remake of one of the biggest boppers in the PlayStation pantheon, The Last of Us Part I is the best way to play or replay Naughty Dogs esteemed survival classic. The striking improvements it makes to its completely rebuilt world are complemented by the subtle refinements of its characters performances, and while it isnt retrofitted with every one of the sequels best changes, the upgrades to movement and AI make a welcome difference in an already outstanding game. Its harder to argue it was an entirely crucial remake, though, considering 2014s The Last of Us Remastered still stands head and shoulders above nearly all of its story-driven, action-adventure peers to this day.

Digital Trends - 9/10
The Last of Us Part I shows that Naughty Dogs gritty action game is still an enduring classic that hasnt aged a day. Though thats largely because Sony wont allow it to, as evidenced by a mostly superfluous remake that doesnt meaningfully improve on the games perfectly modern (and much cheaper) 2014 remaster. However, the project does once again push the industry forward in an important way: by raising the bar for accessibility in gamings past, present, and future.

Gamespot - 8/10
All of The Last of Us Part I's improvements taken by themselves may seem minor, but together they make one of the most memorable games of the PS3 era even better. In some ways, the two parts of The Last of Us are now better aligned, making transitioning between them much smoother. However, in other ways, the years of progress in game design and development are all too apparent. But while some of the level design may not have aged all that well, the vivid cast of characters and remarkable story are more poignant than ever.

Attack of the Fanboy - 6/10
With a hefty price tag and less content than its more than acceptable PS4 counterpart, The Last of Us Part 1 is an entirely unnecessary remake with gorgeous graphics that only make its dated gameplay stick out even more.

I'm glad they continue to slightly improve and then release the Citizen Kane of gaming at full price.

I'm excited to (eventually) have this playable on PC but yeah $70 for this is pretty ridiculous.

This isnt even the most pointless full remake because Dead to Rights Retribution exists. It is still fairly pointless though.

Naw see I was literally going to post that, but then remembered that the game was delisted at the time the remaster came out, so even if the game sucked and the remaster didn't look any better it was quite literally the opposite of pointless!

There is no reason the original remaster couldn't have come to PC. Making this remake had no effect on that potential.

If the original remaster had come out you would have gotten PC lobbies for the mutiplayer!

I'll buy this in a few years time for 10 to get the platinum.

Fantastic game but a pointless remake

I'd play this, but I don't want to spend money on it right now, especially with the many games coming out later this year that I want to get on release. If it becomes available through PS+ or there's a sale at some point, I'd enjoy playing through it again. Seems like the Platinum is easy like Part II and unlike the original.

Yeah, I'm struggling to decide whether I want to pay 70 for God of War at launch later this year, let alone this. Excited to play it once it's, like, 20 or on PS+ or something though.

I think they are using this game to test their new internal tools and engines, and then releasing the result to try to make some money back. They don't actually think the game needs yet another remake. That's a fine strategy really.

We knew intimately that the reason this room is pretty simple and plain wasnt a conscious choice. It wasnt something we did deliberately. We were out of memory. The area before it and the area after it were more important, we wanted those to be spectacular. So this kind of transition space was pretty plain, and we got the opportunity to go back and go, Well, what could this space be? How could we build in environmental storytelling here? How could we make the world feel richer and more detailed?

Lucas had every right to change his films and there are plenty of examples of films being improved long after release. The issue is that the old versions are inaccessible and a lot of the changes are bad.

I wouldn't say "a lot" are better. They certainly aren't better by enough of a margin to offset the bad ones.

Lucas does have the right to change his work, but I'm half convinced many of the changes he made were just to troll the fanbase.

Oh its definitely more than people give him credit for, largely because a lot are changes people dont even realise are different like the various visual improvements, Cloud City looks much better for instance. As for if it offsets the bad changes Depends on the film I guess? The special edition of Empire Strikes Back is certainly an improvement on the original, A New Hope not so much, Return of the Jedi it actually depends which special edition you are talking about! I will always be grateful to the first re-edit for destroying Yub Nub, which is terrible.

Anyway regarding this game if they improved something they improved it, if anything we should want more of that so its not just that game again!

Ouch. Barely topped Horizon this week, launch sales were half of Saints Row which isnt exactly a huge title. Remaking this game and charging so much for if was a mistake Im afraid.

Maybe I was too harsh in post 9 and there is reason to have faith in the general populous!

The other thing to bear in mind is that because of the prices, PS5 games tend to be unusually physical heavy (80%+ when its usually less than 50%) as thats the only way you can get a good deal. So this is actually worse than it looks. I think unless a first party PS5 game is really essential theyve been struggling with the high prices in general.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart had a tiny 18.4% digital share. Miles Morales had only 30.6%. Most other games were over 50% and often much higher than that. People dont want to spend 70 for a game so they look for deals on physical copies when normally they would go digital.
