Anime/manga is more globally popular now than it's ever been. The Magical Girl genre is still one of the more popular ones among children. And Sailor Moon is basically the Magical Girl Bible. Hell, Sailor Moon manga gets reprinted pretty often, and tends to be front and center in plenty of bookstores'anga sections. It still shows up on a fair amount of promotional material. Sailor Moon doesn't get as much Western exposure at those these days but still sees pushes semi-frequently. The mom was reading Peter Pan in E.T. and Spielberg went on to direct Hook. The kids were watching The Thing from Another World in Halloween and John Carpenter remade that one.
