I'm still betting it just gets canceled outright

No way. Game is ready to go, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's a prelude to future new installments.

Slowly growing certain the game's gonna end up like StarFox 2 was in that despite its completion it stays on the shelf for a long time before finally seeing an official release.

Sadly, there are no second chances in the Guru, azuarc doesn't need one.

They're few and far between, but there HAVE been games that have been cancelled after going gold.

I think the most likely scenario for this getting released is that they sort of quietly put it out in the final six months or so of the Switch.

Didn't play 2 for one reason and one reason only - I never managed to beat the final mission of 1 by myself
Yes I followed a turn-by-turn guide and managed to beat it but it never felt fair to me so I kept trying by myself and never managed to do that so I just gave up on the series

Advance Wars 1. But this poll is pointless since it's obvious that Black Hole Rising would win.

I mean, it's closer than I thought it'd be! And I'm curious to hear why - I like both games but to me, AW2 is just such an upgrade in so many ways, AW1 has a lot of polish and balance issues that AW2 cleans up nicely and the only thing I really prefer about AW1 is its artstyle (though AW2 isn't bad) and the fact that it has a really detailed tutorial.

I feel that Advance Wars 1 was the more creative game. Its campaign had a lot of branching paths, COs had animations reacting to each skirmish instead of just being static, COs felt a little more unique overall although I'll admit a lot of them were too weak, the plot at least tried to do something sort of interesting instead of just being a bunch of filler. AW2 can feel too sanitized and bland in comparison. Though I'll admit that AW2 does what it sets out to do a lot better than AW1 does its stuff overall, so I see how AW2 is the better game too.

That's a cool take, it is true that AW2 doesn't really try to do anything like branching campaign paths and secret objectives (aside from the Neotank missions but only one of those isn't completely free to get, the Green Earth one). I still prefer AW2's campaign though because I feel like the missions themselves have more variety and interesting situations to play around, where a lot of AW1's missions feel kinda samey, especially when you start going against Drake and some of the missions just drag.

Also I think I found that I preferred AW2's way of giving you more COs to play as vs AW1's way of having more COs to play against. Feels more fun when you get to play around with the COs' abilities themselves, while the opponent's capabilities can be adjusted simply by their unit placements or giving them weird toys. Andy and Sami are just so boring to play in AW1 (both way more fun in AW2, ironically) and just using Max's absurdly broken direct combat gets surprisingly old after a while!

AW2 is better core gameplay and I overall played it for longer. AW1 felt like it had a bit more heart and soul though, so it's a close pick for me.
