Demo is out....but I guess you can't actually play it yet? Says there's supposed to be a session right now but it doesn't boot up.

I have never played one of these, pretty excited! Was terrified when there were motion controls in the demo and was about to drop it right there, very pleased to see they're optional.

They seem weird at first but I guarantee you motion controls in splatoon are 100% the way to go if you want to be good at the game

Half the time I play video game I'm literally holding my controller to the side, pointed down, or in some niche cases behind my head. It's not happening lol.

They let you access the demo early to prepare your character and settings for when the actual event (the Splatfest) starts on Saturday.

I thought that you were able to at least access the training lobby so you could practice with the weapons, but I don't think you can even do that (unless I missed it). It looks like it's literally just open early to let you be ready to start playing the minute the Splatfest starts (and to hype people up for having a character and being able to walk around, so it's almost like you're playing the game).

Damn and I can't even really do anything with the customization yet then, aside from creating my Octoling. I wanted to change hair color!

I'll let you in on this. You don't actually control your hair color in Splatoon. It's a dynamic color that changes in every match based on your team's color (which, in standard games, is randomly chosen from a whole bunch of team combinations). In the Splatfest it will always stay as your team's color (which in your case is yellow anyway).

Really hope you have fun with your first experience. I joined Splatoon 2 a year and a half into it, so now I get to watch as a newer generation of players starts their first Splatoon game. And I've never been here for the beginning of a new game so it will be new to me too even as a veteran.

I don't know how people play with the motion controls, I would need the vertical sensitivity to be like a quarter of what it is when I already have it turned to the minimum

Asking me to use motion controls is like asking me to pay for an online pass.

No, motion controls have pretty much become a fixture in the industry people just stopped noticing largely because developers actually figured out how to incorporate them properly, unlike online passes which were always a very bad idea.

Also since it is gyro based you dont need to worry about the position of the controller as long as you can move your hands. The gyro controls give you more speed and precision in aiming, personal taste is personal taste but they really are the way to go. Like SHINE says, if you go in without them you are kind of similar to people playing shooters with a controller against keyboard and mouse users.

Not to put you off though! Play the way you want to play. Just know that theyre there for a reason and the dominant choice for a reason as well.

I am also terrible. Our team (Scissors) was winning at half time and the only Tricolor Turf War I won, I swear the other two teams didn't know they were supposed to try and get the Ultra Signal. It's so hard as the winning team, because as soon as either team gets the Ultra Signal even once it becomes a slog to retain coverage.

So I've had a sudden match ending communication error in 4 matches so far where we were winning pretty cleanly.

Is this like.....a problem for these games, DCers?

I've only had 1 dc and it was literally in the first 5 seconds of the match so it seemed legit

getting some long matchmaking stalls tho ending up closing the game and queueing again

Splatfests tend to have more DCs than normal because lots of people only play during Splatfests, which includes bad connection people who you wouldn't have to deal with otherwise.

Sounds like a regular Turf War.

defender just also has the most job to do

gotta keep the middle so no team claims the Ultra Signal (which the defenders can't actually use themselves)

but then also gotta push into both enemy territories, which Defender team has absolute scraps to themselves of

as you push into one enemy's territory, the other enemy typically makes gains on your other side

if you're playing either of the Offence teams... just focus on your own side and taking whatever advantages in the middle open up. you don't have to bother with the other Offence team because the Defenders need to take their territory, there's no point joining that fight when you can simply steal the Defender's turf in the middle
