As I'm sure you know, Punk is getting a lot of heat backstage and people thought he was going to quit the company last week, but I guess he's sticking around. The title match tonight was set for the PPV, but they've moved it here. But why? It might be Punk's last night and he just stayed here to put over Mox before he takes his ball and goes home again. It also could all be a work, but I doubt it. Punk has always been an asshole

Adam Cole hurt his feelings a few months ago in a wrestling promo. He's also pretty hated backstage right now for trying to get Colt fired from AEW, but instead he just got him sent to ROH

Holy shit! I sure hope it's not his last night but since he got hurt, the wheels have been seemingly falling off at AEW.

It can't be helping that WWE looks like they're getting their shit together and might actually start putting out a quality product again.

I think Punk's injury messed up their plans to give Punk a meaty enough reign so that it will matter for whoever the next person that gets it. Unifying the lineal and interim is a step they have to take, and they probably don't want to have Punk retain at DoN, and then wait four months to get it to the next guy.

That said, if Mox did win the match, would his official title reign start when he became interim, or would it start tonight? Would he have two title reigns to his name or three?

This is a great point. Since I don't watch AEW that often, I forget that the PPVs are spread so far out and not once a month like the WWE.

Jon Moxley was the one behind the change and one source says he pitched moving the match up. Eventually, Punk felt the same. They dont know if its connected to any issues. Grapsody's Will Washington noted on the air that he'd heard there was an idea in play a few days before to increase ticket sales and add buzz to the Cleveland AEW show. Fightful has reached out to AEW officials, who did not respond when asked for comment on this story.

I've been following AEW since All In and I haven't missed a Dynamite or PPV.

AEW's been getting progressively shittier since All Out 2021 and it's getting to the point where for the past month or two I didn't even bother to finish watching the main events on Dynamite.

I'm not believing the Punk drama at all, or at least not to the extent that he would leave the company over it. I still think the unification match was moved up so MJF shows up after the match and we get the rubber match between Punk and MJF for the title at All Out.

AEW has had a lot of injuries in the past few months, plus many of their storylines were slowed down or put on hold for the buildup to Forbidden Door. Once MJF comes back, they'll basically be at full strength for the first time since last November when Omega left. Now if All Out sucks and/or Punk really does cause enough drama to leave the company (which I don't think either of those will happen) then I would say AEW fans can start panicking. Until then, I'm staying optimistic that they'll right the ship.

WWE starting to turn things around with HHH in charge should also give AEW a kick in the pants to improve their product too, because their main source of leverage of being able to sign people away from WWE (namely how Vince would treat them if they went to WWE) is gone now.

No, that was dumb. It's not about Punk losing. It's about there being so much hype and interest leading into this match. If anything, should have just let punk drop the belt. This was just dumb. And really felt like a bray Wyatt fiend moment in as much as giving off a what the fuck was that vibe. Just felt like a waste of time

This is the totally wrong time for it. The whole title unification match thing is AEW's entire storyline for the past three months, they've basically not even had a main event scene beyond Mox beating random people who don't matter because they think this eventual match is so big on its own. You only get one time to do it and having it be a shenanigan match sucks unless it's something waaaaayyyy more dramatic than "and then the hurt guy turned out to be hurt enough that he shouldn't have been in the ring and loses free and it was stupid to have ever been interested". They did something unexpected yes, but the only story it tells is that Punk and the AEW doctors are morons.

That's what I'm thinking too. They may have underestimated the severity of his injury when they announced they would be doing the interim title thing, so now that they realized that mistake, they brought Punk back to drop the belt for real.

Knowing this though, Tony Khan really need to re-think this interim title thing. I get that he doesn't want to strip people of titles and he wants to have fighting champions, but if AEW really insists on continuing the use of interim titles going in the future, they really do need to add a time limit on it and make that time limit a clearly known rule. I would say that if the champ can't be cleared to come back within 3 months of the interim champ being crowned, then they drop the title and the interim champ becomes the new champ for real.

CM Punk isn't the future of AEW anyway. He's 43 and his knees are absolutely fucked.

I'm not sure what the angle of this work is and what they're going for, but I feel like Tony is tired of not being able to move on his ideas when his wrestlers keep getting injured all the time. They had to put Adam Cole front and center for like 16 weeks straight because they didn't want people to forget about him by the time Kenny came back and frankly the product suffered from all the constant TV time for Adam Cole and his catchphrase and his time waster 2 minute intro he HAS to do every single time he shows up.

I really don't know. Between this CM Punk stuff, the Rosa/Britt/Hayter reports, the Kingston/Guevara altercation, not to mention the still ongoing MJF situation... there's just a lot of shit going on behind the scenes, and Tony Khan really needs to try and wrangle them back in. Speaking of wrangling people in though: Dynamite did over a million viewers last night for the first time in a bit.
