I wouldn't feel safe having a combat veteran being armed around kids.

if you treat kids like you think any one of them might be a psycho who is going to go off at any moment and you need a "good guy with a gun" to watch over them in case that happens, you're going to have zero chance of them ever trusting or respecting you or seeing your authority over them with any amount of legitimacy beyond rule by fear, and that's not going to engender any kind of safe or welcoming environment conducive to learning and well-adjusted behavior

I saw one of these guys at my kid's elementary school. Fat guy walking around in a bullet proof vest over a polo shirt. He had some kind of badge so I'm assuming law enforcement, but honestly he just looked out of place. This was in addition to the normal uniformed SRO

you guys do understand that not everyone who is a veteran has seen combat or has PSTD..right?

Im considered a combat veteran and I just stayed in a office and played volleyball at night in Iraq. It was like a vacation, and I never saw combat

This has been me for the last few months.

I know civilized people hate guns and want them to disappear, but armed security is practical in a violence-laden country.

America will have violence for decades to come. Being ready for violence makes more sense than wishing it away. We're at least 40 years away from repealing the 2nd amendment and we'll likely have mass shootings for years to come after that. People who have guns won't surrender them simply because they're told to.

Florida is dumpster fire of a state, but this is one that somebody got right.

Remember, having kids read a book where two men are holding hands may traumatize them.

But walking past a guy with a gun everyday when they go to lunch is perfectly normal.

No one will challenge him and he wouldn't run away if they did. It's shooters who attack children that are cowards, not combat veterans with training and experience behind them.

If I was going to do a school shooting and the school had an armed guard, then I would walk up to him from behind, pull out a gun and shoot him in the head.
It removes my closest and biggest threat, it gives me more firepower, most likely a bulletproof west and as a bonus, he is most likely carrying a keycard that gives him access to all closed classrooms.
I mean, an armed guard that cant access rooms where the shooter is feels kinda pointless.

ignoring the causes of school shootings, ignoring preventative measures to keep them from ever happening, and entirely focusing on having the coolest gunfight possible

Keep in mind that like on campus police officers, they'll end up using him to get "trouble" (read: brown) students kicked out of class or even school and if it elevates and results in student injury or death the state will no doubt defend him.
