Because generally it is valuation and not cash and therefore practically worthless at those figures. If he were to try to exercise the equity he has in those companies he would crash the prices and receive only a fraction of that amount.

Though, I admittedly dont know where these numbers were pulled from.

Govt contracts that he lobbies for. That's a huge part of many successful companies. Tech, medicine, space, etc. The big (safe) money is in govt contracts. It's also why companies tend to flock to and around uni campuses. They can let state sponsored innovation and experimentation happen without risk in universities, then swoop in once it's successful and make money on them.

His wealth is almost entirely in Tesla stock which is highly overvalued. He is not cash rich like some of the other people on the list.

If he tried to pull that money out of Tesla stock then the stock would plummet in the middle of the process to the point that he probably wouldn't be on the top 10 anymore.

It's not nearly as great as you think it is. Literally nothing SpaceX does solves the problem of Mars or cheaper space travel. The reusable rocket stuff is still expensive as fuck and is only marginally cheaper than disposable rockets. Like it's great that we don't have to send people into space hitching a ride with the Russians but that's about it.

It's from the valuation of his stock, not profits from his company. Imagine if you come across a space diamond everyone wanted, and then you hold an auction for it. The bid goes up to $200 billion.

The valuation for Tesla is also insane. "Investors" are valuating it to be worth more than the other major car companies combined. The speculation around the stock is unbelievable.

The argument is that Tesla is "a tech company, not a car company", which might have been reasonable at one point. If Tesla was truly ahead of everyone when it came to self-driving then perhaps the valuation would be justified. But they aren't ahead of anyone and the tech seems to be another 20 years out.

That's why a lot of people think the twitter bullshit he started was an excuse for him to get his shares out before the market makes a correction.

It's weird to me that investors have so much faith in Tesla, to be honest.

Yeah. He at least keeps up a good public image.

Really the only bad thing is that he has been said to have potentially been affiliated with the Jeffrey Epstein stuff.

But who knows how true that really is.
