it was pretty annoying to me even as a kid, and it really fucked the series when people from that point on expected nothing but RE4 style games out of the series. it's an example of how gatekeeping can be a good thing tbh

I jumped in at OG RE 2. I have RE4 wii edition I'm just being lazy tbh.
This isn't much different than people that jumped into the Zelda series with Ocarina of Time imo.

I started with 5.

I technically watched my sibling play the others, so I knew the story up to that point. I could never deal with the controls of the older games.

Not necessarily.

Just because someone jumps into a series at a certain point doesn't mean they can't play the ones that came before. Both Playstation and xbox let's you play most of the series.

I started with 5.

I eventually played RE4, Revelations, 6, Revelations 2, 7, REmake 1 2 and 3, and RE0.

I still can't play Code Veronica, though.

I started with re4, and it's still the best in the series. Seven was pretty good remake one and two were all right. The rest are too bad to finish, so I haven't got to try 8 yeah because it's too expensive.

I only own RE3 and I have never completed it

RE2 was the first one I played but never got anywhere close to beating it as a kid. RE5 was the first that I actually beat.

I did. I played 20 mins of the REmake before that and decided I hated the controls and never went back to it after that.

My first Resident Evil game was RE1 Remake last year. Played through RE2 and RE2 remake earlier this year. I literally finished RE3 Nemesis last night and will likely play RE3 Remake soon

What are the Revelations games? Are they part of the main continuity?

I played everything* before RE4 (Think I got Directors Cut and 2 same day at a flea market)and RE4 blew me the fuck away.

If someone can't see it, you might be bias. Cause it's not even about what it did for RE, it's about what it did for gaming in general. RE4 is more about if you were early on a wave or you jumped in later at this point. And RE4 still has a better campaign than pretty much all the games that jumped on its formula after.

Some see it being late to RE. I see it as being early to over the shoulder shooters.

The fact you're bringing it up 20 years later in this topic is a statement of it's own. People have never stopped bringing it up since it came out. 20 years of it never falling out of the conversation.

RE4 was the first and only RE I've finished. Tried to play an earlier one and couldn't do it.

Yeah RE4 was my first. Then my second was that weird multiplayer one on the PS2, that one sucked ass, and was my last one. Fuck em.

This. Terrible gameplay and camera angles.

NGL I stared at RE1 directors cut for the PS. Played every one after on release. I thought RE4 at the time was perfect. Best RE experience I had easily.

5 was fun for coop but I agree I miss the puzzles and item management a bit.

Can't even walk n shoot in that game lol. Neither did the classic trilogy but at least it made more sense given the fixed camera and tank controls.

REmake on Gamecube. Loved the hell out of it and bought OG 2, 3, Code Veronica and Zero all still on Gamecube.

They wanted to get new people into the series. Shinji Mikami actually mentioned that in interviews back in the day. It's is one reason RE4 was different.

My wife has only played 4 and 6. Sometimes at night I lay awake in bed and think about just leaving. No explanation. No goodbye. Just gone.

i'm guessing it was the best selling resident evil at the time. that's how that works.

5 and 6 apparently have sold even more, so those are some people's first resident evil.

Started with the first and welcomed the change in gameplay for 4. Of course, the original games were still excellent.

Cause RE4 is a big part of a lot of people's teen years and people know it'll get us going at each other lol. Which, we are.

I not only tried RE1 & RE5 first and didnt like them but it wasnt til 2018 that I tried RE4 and still list it as one of my favorite games of all time.

It was my first one, but I did go back and play the previous ones. The ones I could anyway: 0, REmake, and CV.

RE2 was my first game. Hated the controls and camera back then and still do. RE4 was a huge improvement.

The Revelations games are both canon. Revelations 1 takes place between RE4 and 5, and Revelations 2 takes place between 5 and 6.

First one was okay. Had some good ideas. But it was a port from the 3DS and since it origi ated there, had a lot of limitations.

But Revelations 2 is honestly probably one of my top 5 RE games.

Real RE fans started with the series on PS1

RE2 was my first as a kid, but I rarely got past the beginning. My true first experience was RE4 on the GameCube. Still my favorite by the way!

True. If it wasn't RE4, I never would have thought the series was good and been terribly disappointed going to play the older games.
