The scene with Victor trying to cook in Walt's place. Everybody says Walt is schooling Victor here and being a big Chad but honestly it gives me the exact opposite vibe

Seems like Walt is super panicked and grasping at straws to keep Gus from killing him. Victor could have totally cooked for Gus and done decently well following the steps he memorized. Gus only killed him because he showed his face in the apartment building after the murder and got ID'd

I feel the same that he was just grasping at stuff to not die, considering Jesse literally did the exact same thing and cooked for Gus' rival by just memorizing the steps. (forget his name, but I wont spoil anything if u havent made it that far) and they even tested the purity to make sure he knew what he was doing.

I thought you'd be talking about this scene from the topic title.

IIRC Walt ends up concluding that Victor stepped out of his role and didn't follow orders.

Probably that with the colossal fuck up of letting Jesse kill Gale led Gus to kill him. That was probably why Victor started cooking; to try to prove his worth.

Walt 100% is grasping because he's afraid Gus will kill him

That said, there's a very real arrogant part of Walt that also shows through here. Walt is offended at the thought that Victor could ever cook the product as well as he could.

I think Walt and Victor were both just desperately trying to save their asses. Victor realized he'd screwed up and was trying to prove useful by showing Gus that he could kill Walt instead and let him cook the meth.

1) Walt is scared shitless and is grasping at straws because hes afraid to die.

2) Victor had zero chance of ever replacing Walt, but Walt did not know it. Walt was nervous because Victor was following the proper steps, but Walt was not aware of Gales conversation with Gus prior to Walt joining them.

In a flashback, Gale is showing setting up the lab as the new equipment was coming in. Gale questions Gus about the blue meth, and says that while his own product is very high end and very pure (96%), the blue stuff is higher than 99% purity. He goes on to talk about how this is the greatest product in existence and that he cannot replicate it.

This is the conversation that ultimately convinces Gus to give Walt a shot. Gale was very gifted as well, and the best he could do is 96%. Victor has never even used the equipment before. He might be able to make meth, but it was gonna suck. It would be like someone who never used a kitchen before saying I watched like 100 Gordon Ramsey videos, now watch me make a 5 star dinner for everyone.
