i know this dude cause of a book i've been reading about norse mythology. from what i understood, he compiled a bunch of stories from Loki, Thor, Odin and all the norse gods and myths and retold them while keeping the essencial details. im liking it tho!

I very much enjoyed the series, so much I may consider reading the comic. Given the recent purges happening at WB, I am concerned there won't be a season 2.

And god, people are going to be mad as fuck about this show being "woke." Not realizing that every bit of it is from a thirty-year-old comic. God help them if Wanda ever shows up.

Funniest thing I saw was someone whingeing about some parts of the adaptation on a post Neil Gaiman made on facebook. He just categorically shut them down.

Discovery/HBO/WB dont have a say on a Netflix show. Netflix has the rights and generally these contracts are written that as long as you keep making additional seasons you keep the rights. (Why Sony makes Spider-Man movies every few years, so the right dont revert to Disney/Marvel). Daredevil reverted to Disney/Marvel because Netflix didnt make any more seasons.

Finished it. Loved it. Hope we get the full series adapted.

When you know what happens in the comics, the ending is kind of funny. All this big build-up about Lucifer doing something that's going to make god "absolutely livid and bring Morpheus to his knees" and he (she?) is just going to fuck off and force Dream to pick the new ruler of Hell lol.

Disney cancelled the deal with Netflix. Does Netflix own the rights to Sandman? That is the only way they could keep making it.

For those of you that have watched through it already, How is the 24 Hours adaptation? I think that's my favorite arc in early Sandman.

Fucking wonderful. It's not a perfect adaptation because they changed Dr. Destiny a bit, but it's so great.

its great but it actually felt like 24 hours watching it LOL.

I'm like 4 eps in. Pretty good so far.

Haha, glad they mentioned Hob Gabling.

it should have been an animated series. The show looks way too clean and realistic.

Yes. The art and writing are fantastic. It's a pretty solid graphic novel.

The comic is a bit more fucked up, but as I said, the main difference is John. Dr. Destiny is a supervillain and doesn't get the sympathetic backstory. He doesn't do what he did out of some misguided belief that truth is the most moral option, he's just a sociopath who finds it entertaining.

I checked the comic and came up with a more comprehensive list of differences:

In general, the characters don't interact as much. The comic consists of snapshots of each of the 24 hours with John escalating his manipulation. It's more heavily narrated than dialogue driven.

Marsh isn't the cook, he's a trucker (funnily enough, the diner has no cook, so Bette must be working her ass off). His wife drank herself to death because she discovered he and Bette were having an affair. He lost his way after that; a mailman at the time, he went to jail for five years for stealing mail. He and Bette continue to have a relationship.

Bette is a bit more...delusional. She doesn't tell anyone about her writing, but she has a rather inflated opinion of it. She plans one day to box it up and send it to publishers where it'll be immediately accepted and praised. Johnny Carson will ask her how she gets into the mindset of a waitress so well when she's just a writer, not a waitress at all. That kind of thing. Her son went to college and never came back. Marsh reveals later on that he saw her son in prison, picked up for prostitution in Gotham. He notes that you could have him for a pack of cigarettes and he paid up. I'd actually forgotten that detail, thought the show made it up whole cloth.

The couple are almost completely different. It's said that he married her for money, but it's more the sense that she's old money. He's still a businessman, but no mention is made of her having a job. He's an asshole; when John gives them dreams of their heart's desire, he dreams of fucking a hooker, beating her up, and driving off without paying. She seems to be more in love with him, dreaming about having his head on a platter so he won't cheat on her anymore. She later confesses to sneaking into a mortuary as a teenager and having sex with a dead body; even when she has her husband lie very still during sex, it's never "as good."

The young job applicant's pretty much identical. The only difference with him is the result of the couple's. She's not CEO, so he doesn't speak to her all that much.

Judy's the exact same.

As for what John does:

• First he has them dream of their heart's desire.
• He initiates conflict between them, leading to them fighting.
• He has them worship him as a god.
• He has them confess their deepest secrets.
• Orgy.
• He has the three women play the role of oracles. He unwittingly taps into the Furies and they give him the same prophecy you see in the show.
• He makes them sane again
• They play a party game called "murder in the dark" but no one seems to have actually been killed. There's a scream and a laugh, so maybe someone was just injured.
• "Confession and penance." This is where Marsh confesses that he had sex with Bette's son in prison while she nails his hand to the table.
• Reverts them to primal animal instincts with the two younger males vying for the pack leader position.
• Makes them sing and dance.
• Makes them mutilate and kill themselves.

I like the casting of Dream, but there's something about the face that kinda irks me. I keep imagining that his face should be more sharp, like in his chin area. But it's so...round?

Yeah, that repeatedly threw me off too. Certain angles he looks great, others he looks a bit puffy.

Yeah he got dem chubby cheeks. It's sort of the Cavill/Geralt thing where in certain shots he just IS fucking Geralt and in others it doesn't look quite as good.

I said in another topic, but maybe Benedict Cumberbatch would've worked better, at least features/physically.

Haha yeah that's what it is. The chubbiness. So weird because I usually don't notice things like this.

Anyway, I finished the series and just head that Act 3 on audible will be released later this year. Can't wait

Finally finished it and can say it was fantastic. Loved all of it.

Great casting for basically everyone
Great costumes
Fantastic music - both songs and the "ambience" songs they made themselves

2 thumbs up. Makes me want to read up the comic/book now, but also kinda want to wait and not "spoil" any of it.

I wouldn't mind a spin off featuring Joanna Constantine. It could even feature her ancestor so the show would have an excuse to go into the past for stuff.

I wasn't a fan of gwendoline christies Lucifer, she just didn't scream "The Actual Devil", she seemed to play lucifer like a snobby rich lady to me imo.

IIRC, that's pretty close to how Lucifer comes across in early Sandman.

I read the first 17 issues of sandman, and she looks like Lucifer from the comic and the David Bowie likeness, i just felt like there wasn't this immense pressure of dream being in the same room as Lucifer.

I saw all of ep 4 and half of episode 5... and all I gotta say is that the latter is crazy. O_o

Truth be told, the original story didn't really get across Lucifer's chagrin at having been bested by Morpheus's dream of heaven comment. I always thought it was a bit of an overreaction on his part when it came to needing revenge. This adaptation did a decent job of setting that up at least, as well as how serious Lucifer was about keeping Morpheus there.

Bit of irony with the (Sandman Overture spoilers): "Dreams don't fucking die" line though...given that poor Hope Beautiful Lost Nebula was the representative for the Dead.
