WNBA had a team (or maybe it was NCAA Ladies?) Basketball had a team that won so many games in a row, it shattered basically every win streak record in modern history.

also fuck you for calling Gretz/NHL "something no one cares about". It's clearly 4th in america (still ahead of pro soccer!), but it's huge in a lot of other countries.

Nah man, I was using Gretzky as the example of a legend everyone knows from a popular sport to illustrate the idea that maybe such legends must exist in lesser known sports. Hence, "the Wayne Gretzky of fly fishing".

I.e. implying that maybe there's some legendary fly Fisher on Gretzky's level but because its fly fishing no one has ever heard of him.

ya that take had to be sarcastic. LeBron is the closest thing to Tiger Woods, athlete-wise. Bigger than Messi/etc because the Chinese market cares about basketball more than soccer.

LeBron is playing in a softer era.

Defenders now just simply stand in the paint and look at the ball sinking through the hoop.

Like stick a knee or elbow out.

Trip or closeline his ass.

The highest paid athlete in all human history is thought to be Roman charioteer Gaius Appuleius Diocles.
He won 1,462 of the 4,257 four-horse races he competed in, and finished second in an additional 1,438 races.
He retired after racing for 24 years, and it was extremely rare to survive that long.
He earned over 35 million Sesterces for his races. That is something like 15 billion dollars. Todays highest paid athlete, Michael Jordan is only worth 2 billion dollars.

I know next to nothing about basketball but isn't this more to do with a change in the hand checking rules rather than players being softer?

Doyle Brunson: Poker

He retired now, but he was such a legend that used to rent out his personal good luck charms for $400 an hour to other players.

Poker tournaments can go hours or days even so assuming a player borrowed his charm for the entire tournament, and they made it far, thats thousands of dollars in profit for absolutely 0 work or effort.

Absolutely, for example one measure in cricket of (loosely) comparing batsmen is called a Test Cricket Batting Average. Bradman's was 99.94. Out of the best players in the world currently, the highest is 60.

The kicker is that in his final test match he just needed 4 runs to make it a perfect 100.
146]
In the final Test at The Oval, Bradman walked out to bat in Australia's first innings. He received a standing ovation from the crowd and three cheers from the opposition.[147] His Test batting average stood at 101.39.[148] Facing the wrist-spin of Eric Hollies,[149] Bradman pushed forward to the second ball that he faced, was deceived by a googly, and was bowled between bat and pad for a duck.[150] An England batting collapse resulted in an innings defeat, denying Bradman the opportunity to bat again and so his career average finished at 99.94;[147][151][152] if he had scored just four runs in his last innings, it would have been 100. A story developed over the years that claimed Bradman missed the ball because of tears in his eyes,[152] a claim Bradman denied for the rest of his life.[153]

Philip Matthew doyle - parkour. Not really a legend compared to atheletes of older sports..His prime time was just a lil over a decade ago but the sport is still young and his techniques were more refined than majority of people practicing parkour back then. He was featured in a lot of UK parkour vids from 2007 to 2010 era (outside of his own channel which have vids of him training in 2006). Still shows up in UK parkour vids but is no longer a big highlight.

Kurt angle Olympic wrestling. He made more a killing using that as his gimmick in fake wrestling.

I'll even admit I watched the match he allegedly broke his neck or back in. I couldn't tell where it happened. But he's a helluva fighter to still win the match. Boring as hell though. Wrestling is one of those sports it's more fun to do than watch. I did it in middle school and I wouldn't even really watch other people between my matches.

Sport or not, Magnus Carlson has been absolutely dominant in chess since he topped the ratings charts. The timing for him is also perfect because he has some personality, speaks English, is a good person, and actively streams.

There are YouTube videos of him destroying some of the best players in the world while drinking with his friends and purposely playing bad positions. He is just on a completely different level.
