https://www.techtimes.com/articles/278637/20220730/indonesian-government-bans-steam-epic-games-digital-services-due-permit.htm

The loss of the gaming platforms would have been bad enough, but getting rid of PayPal is one of the dumbest decisions I've ever seen a government do.

I expect a walkback within three months at least.

According to Gizguide, Indonesia has decided to suspend multiple digital service providers in the country because of some issues regarding their permits. Because of this, Indonesian gamers won't be able to access their game libraries anymore as a result.

The decision came after the government imposed strict compliances on the permit application in the country. If the platforms do not abide, they will be blocked right away.

Regardless of whether the service provider is a local or foreign company, the Indonesian government will not have a second thought if they fail to comply with the requirements.

So, what are these "requirements", then?

It isn't like the services got permanently banned, they had their services suspended because they were late in filing permits with the country and the government happens to be super strict with missing filing deadlines. They also apply the same rules to domestic businesses, so they aren't specifically targeting foreign companies.

Again, heavily depends on what is required to "comply" with these new permits

Sounds like from the article they have only processed a few hundred permits, and have something like 8,000 in their backlog. Yet they decided to block the sites anyways even if they have a permit submitted, but not processed.

I doubt the companies care that much considering Indonesia probably isn't a huge slice of their user base, but I imagine the consumers are PISSED. At least VPN usage is going to go up significantly there.

I didn't read that as a backlog, just the total number of submissions as of 7/29 and highlighting the disparity between foreign and local request volumes.

"In another story from IGN on Saturday, July 30, the country's Communication and Information Technology Ministry or Kominfo said that about 282 foreign permit applications had been submitted as of July 29. On the other hand, the local permit applications they received have reached 8,680."

It doesn't matter the reasons. Why defend their shitty government?
