It's an honest question. Is heritage an okay thing to be proud of? Or just personal accomplishments?

I don't get being "proud" of something you didn't accomplish. Like, you didn't win a triathlon, receive a golden shamrock, and become Irish. It's just something you're born with.

Now, if someone is bigoted toward you and trying to make you feel small, then I can see being proud in defiance of bigotry.

its cool to celebrate traditions food history etc...

Things like black pride (wrong, black power in the face of opression) exist because of oppression.

You're Irish so you know your case is unique

Same can be said for feeling ashamed for something awful your ancestors did, but you never condoned or participated in.

I'd say it's OK to refuse to be ashamed of where you (or your great-great-grandparents) were from when people tell you that you ought to be. Which is pretty much what FortuneCookie said, I guess.

Celebrate your heritage and be happy to share it but pride can lead to dark things. Also I feel like people use heritage as a shortcut to having a personality, so insulting it becomes an even more scathing attack to that person.

I have like 8 heritages and I don't care about any of them >_> I'm just me. I'm more than a just a culture

Its not a big enough deal to even categorize as right or wrong, but I do feel bad for people that need to have a moral label on everything, even something as innocuous as this.

Do you have much of a connection with Ireland beyond liking to say that it makes you good at drinking? I'm assuming that you're American, though I could be wrong!

Vegeta's saiyan pride is generally seen as a negative thing for his character lol

I am half Norwegian which essentially means I am a descendant of Vikings which is very cool which means I have to be proud of it

I have both Polish and German ancestry. And I live in Wisconsin, which has strong roots in both of those nationalities. I don't know exactly if pride is the right word, but I think all of the influence those cultures have had on my communities and upbringing are pretty awesome. I definitely think it's okay to appreciate the things your relatives brought over when they migrated to a new country.

Go for it. Do it for the culture.

Unlike the English, french, Dutch etc, they weren't colonisers, they were an oppressed group of people.

Have they had it as rough as black people? Hell no, but it's not like they were viewed as equal to english whites for a long time. And there is the accent as an identifier too

There's a difference between being prideful and elitist

I'm aware that Western Europe made some developments, but they were bolstered by Southern Europe, North Africa, Middle East. Arabic scribes in Spain helped retranslate old texts (Latin, Greek, from ancient times). So that's acknowledging that we're the good, for being the same (not being better or others being worse)

Most of the Nationalism is in the past 500 years, too. Where we attribute our ethnic groups to others and rivals . (I'm Irish and British, ancestry, living in America)

Yeah. There's never anything wrong with it. It's only wrong if someone decides to be a supreme douche about it to others.
