I think that was a decent and well articulated apology. I don't know how much it'll repair his career or image or whatever. But I think it was decent. And it's like he says, I'm sure he is ready to make up with Chris, but it's not up to him, it's up to Chris. And he sounds like he's accepting the consequences now, though it took some time for him to get there. Emotion was involved, and we know emotions aren't logical. So I think if he just keeps playing it cool, he'll be ok.

Bear in mind will hasn't been on social media since this happened so that's why it's kind of trending now.

Judging public apologies on their level of sincerity is so bizarre to me. Like it's somehow shocking to people that public videos have been carefully rehearsed.l and curated.

I don't think he needs any more money, but that movie is definitely in the same jam as WB with Flash and Aquaman 2. It's been completed and was delayed after the slap. The payment was agreed upon in 2020.

A sincere apology would be "Shit, I fucked up. I'm sorry man." and maybe as he did apologizing to Rock's family.

But instead this was bullshit. He didn't even admit he did wrong, just "In retrospect I didn't react in the right way after being insulted." "I've spent 3 months working through all the complexities and emotions on my health journey after letting people down and let me know that letting people down is my trauma."

That's not how human beings talk. That's not even an apology, it's weird egotyiscal snakeoil salesman word salad rhetoric. He's still implying Rock did a bad thing and his actions were beyond simply being an idiot

This wasn't a deeply personal divorce. He jumped on stage and attacked a comedian because a joke hurt his feelings. It's not a complicated issue. You made an idiot of yourself.

"I was an idiot, I fucked up. I'm sorry Chris/Chris Family. I promise I'll do better and want to apologize in private if you'll let me."

That would be sincere. This felt like more like an advert for the Will Smith brand than anything else.

This isn't at all true. The sincerity comes from whether he means it, not necessarily what words he chooses. You don't know if he did or didn't. However, given his position having a well-thought out apology isn't a condemning move. It's actually smart and makes sense.

What Will Smith did was stupid on multiple counts, but I don't hate the guy.

He just aired his household's dirty laundry on national TV at the Oscars of all places. It's kind of hard not to honestly acknowledge that, despite all the wealth and privilege, his family's still got some toxicity broiling underneath. And now the world knows for sure, not just rumor-chasing tabloid vultures. Clap clap.

I have no pitchfork or torch ready for Jada Pinkett either. Will just really needs to face facts: she considers herself his wife in status and legality, that's about it. There may have been a point in their marriage where the love was mutual, but it's either gone or drying up. Plain as day whenever she makes scathing remarks about her own husband in interviews and on TV. Contrary to sitcom tropes, that's not something a woman who genuinely loves her man casually does in the public eye, not when his reputation is on the line. If you think it is, take off the rose tinted glasses because the couple you're basing that on were not as genuinely close-knit as you thought...

Luckily their kids are basically grown and ready for privileged adult lives Will set them up for. If he and Jada were to split now, the kids are out of the danger zone.

Fuck Will Smith. He is only doing this to try and salvage some of his rep. Even without it people are offering him a 25+ million hiring bonus to do a job for them. I think he can move on from this though. I mean, he stepped out front and finally elaborated on the incident in earnest. So, I think, though we won't forget, he will still be able to move on and probably even get a couple of running joke laughs as time goes by and we reflect.

Dude ultimately couldn't even admit he was wrong and acted like this was some big series of events where someone wronged him and not just him acting like a moron that would have got any normal man put in a jail cell.

It's rhetoric.

Seems genuine to me. I wont say I forgive him and seems silly to me that anyone whos not directly involved saying they do or dont forgive him. Chris Rock is the only person with forgiveness to dole out here.

I think Will trying to act like there was nuance is what makes people dislike his apology.

I can be depressed or experience trauma. That will never justify me mistreating others. Will should not try to soften what he did at all. Any normal person who pulls that shit at a work ceremony is getting sacked.

Will may have had an internal reason, but he still choose to not apologize to Chris. He also says sorry to his family but I apologize to Chris. Which is subconsciously telling imo.

Chris didnt even need to walk off the embarrassing wussy slap, so he didnt feel a need to bring the law into it
he felt that making a bigger deal of Will's baby tantrum would detract from victims of worse violence

people got multiple reasons for brushing away Will Smith's late cardboard apology
lot of us never cared or wanted his dumb privileged ass to sit in jail
but every ounce of shame tossed his way was earned through his stupidity that night, shouldnt have pulled that stunt for the country to see
