I make a totally arbitrary and inconsistent distinction in my mind between "depressing" and "sad."
I definitely get this, I have lots of arbitrary distinctions too. I mostly share yours, at least if I'm understanding it right. I have several tearjerker anime ranked high that I'd classify as sad, not depressing.

For bleak or grim anime in particular, one of the things that makes or breaks it for me is if it's just used for shock value or if it has a logical foundation in the setting. Something like Hanebado I view as bad because it's being so bleak and torturous about... badminton. MGRP has their lives on the line and there's magical justification for it, so I'm a lot more forgiving of the characters going through hell.

As much as I don't like depressing anime, I have at least one that ranks really high! It's just an increasingly tough needle to thread to get that high, at least for me. Depressing anime need to be depressing in the exact kind of ways I like. Meanwhile I can enjoy the most mindless CGDCT with no problem.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a clear distinction, but I definitely think of pretty different things if I hear "depressing" as opposed to "sad". My first thought for a sad anime is something like a KEY show, whereas for depressing I'd envision something like Welcome to the NHK. I don't think those anime are especially comparable--I'm sure one could construct examples where the distinction is a bit murkier, but I just meant this is where my mind goes first.

183. Konosuba: Gods Blessing on this Wonderful World
https://myanimelist.net/anime/30831/Kono_Subarashii_Sekai_ni_Shukufuku_wo
Winter 2016 (10 episodes), Winter 2017 (10 episodes)
My Score: 4/10, MAL Score: 8.12/10 S1, 8.28/10 S2
Best Character: Darkness

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpG3BPNQepY

Premise: Satou Kazuma dies a pathetic death and, when given the option, he reincarnates in a fantasy world. Hes allowed to take any item with him to aid in his quest, and Kazuma chooses Aqua, the obnoxious goddess who gave him the choice in the first place!

The Good: Despite what my 4/10 score might imply, I enjoyed Konosuba. This is a comedy anime, so the focus was always on jokes rather than a grandiose plot or character arcs. Because of that, it avoids a lot of things that bug me about the isekai genre, which was nice. Darkness was my favorite of the main cast. I liked how shes a masochist who only became an adventurer to get hurt. Megumins explosive magic was another standout that led to fun gags. Kazuma and Aqua werent as good, but they rounded out the dynamic and I didnt dislike them.

The Bad: Konosuba is comedy anime where the sense of humor wasnt my thing. I saw the jokes, and I knew why others would find them funny. I just personally rarely found them funny. The comedic styles it focused on (mean-spirited humor against Kazuma, Aqua being haughty yet useless, etc) arent usually my favorites. That doesnt mean I hated those jokes, and Im sure there are examples of other anime that use those styles that I enjoyed. Konosuba simply never came together for me as anything other than fine.

Overall: Konosuba excels at a certain brand of comedy. That style didnt appeal to me much, however, and the anime didnt have a whole lot else going on to make up for that. It was still an enjoyable watch, but I rarely found it laugh-out-loud funny like I know a lot of other people did.

I think I watched 3 or 4 episodes of Konusuba and the humor did not land for me. The character gimmicks weren't particularly amusing to me either so I would need ot know the characters really grow beyond their gimmicks for me to continue it.

182. Sabagebu: Survival Game Club
https://myanimelist.net/anime/20709/Sabage-bu
Summer 2014 (12 episodes)
My Score: 4/10, MAL Score: 7.35/10
Best Character: Sonokawa Momoka

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5VKfvQMSME
(Couldnt find the OP or ED, linked to full OP song instead)

Premise: Sonokawa Momoka is persuaded to join her schools Survival Game Club. The members, who are all strange in their own way, often engage in intense airsoft battles.

The Good: Sabagebu is a comedy anime about cute girls with airsoft guns. I remember the humor being very intense, often verging on black comedy. A lot of the jokes were also based on absurd humor, whether from how unrealistic the situations became or just outright randomness. I usually enjoyed a lot of the individual jokes in an episode. Momoka was a fun character as well for how terrible of a person she could become. The over-the-top action was fun.

The Bad: Sabagebu is another comedy anime where the sense of humor wasnt my thing. I mentioned above that I often enjoyed individual jokes, but they rarely came together in a way that carried me through a whole skit, let alone a whole episode. Black humor and absurd humor arent my favorite comedic styles, though I can enjoy them in small doses or if theyre used in certain ways. It just felt like Sabagebu relied on them too much, and for me it wasnt enough.

Overall: Sabagebu has two things going for it, the crazy (low-stakes) gunfight action scenes and the jokes derived from them. I enjoyed both of those aspects well enough, but the sense of humor this anime used wasnt my favorite thing.

(I guess my hint for this wasn't very good, but it's a tough anime to hint for without using any of the words in the title! I just used the setup of one of my favorite bits as the hint)

181. Daily Lives of High School Boys
https://myanimelist.net/anime/11843/Danshi_Koukousei_no_Nichijou
Winter 2012 (12 episodes)
My Score: 4/10, MAL Score: 8.24/10
Best Character: Yassan

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_ywkjjPVfY

Premise: Tabata Hidenori, Tanaka Yoshitake, and Tadakuni are three friends who go to high school together. They often get into bizarre yet comedic situations throughout their daily lives.

The Good: Daily Lives of High School Boys is another comedy anime Id describe as excelling at a certain type of absurdist, over-the-top humor. It mostly revolved around skits involving the main trio or a growing cast of strange characters from around town. My favorite running series of gags involved Yassan, the literature girl who consistently failed to live out idealized romantic situations from her books. There were lots of other characters or skits that I enjoyed as well.

The Bad: This is the third anime in a row where I need to say It was funny, it just wasnt my kind of funny and Im out of unique ways to say that. Please proceed to the Overall section where I examine what being funny even means.

Overall: Comedy anime are difficult for me to talk about. Im by no means an expert on jokes or comedic styles or anything like that. Its hard to categorize the kind of humor each anime uses. Even if I could, while its easy to say I dont like that style, that isnt usually true because I can often think of another show where I do enjoy it. The only thing I can say for sure is, after hearing a joke, I know whether I found it funny or not. Daily Lives of High School Boys had good bits, and some Id even describe as great. Quite often, however, I found it lacking. I think the generalization Im most comfortable making is that I prefer humor where its paired with at least some sort of overarching plot and character growth, which Daily Lives doesnt really have.

COMING UP TOMORROW:
180: I defeated this anime in a single blow.
179: This anime is carrying around its own severed head.
178: This anime would die if I ripped off its bandages.

I also thought Daily Lives of High School Boys from the hint and just didn't say anything.

Those river scenes made me absolutely lose it when I first watched them. Quality stuff. Some of the humour in that show is definitely a miss, but when it hit, it hit good. Although I don't think I've seen it since it was airing, so I may well not enjoy it these days. Quality comedy anime is hard to come by, especially with translation issues, both in language and culture. I like that show and Konosuba well enough, but I get what you mean about them being the wrong kind of funny personally.

(Another anime I haven't finished. That's right, this is getting 4/10 based off the beloved first season, not the iffy second season!)

180. One Punch Man
https://myanimelist.net/anime/30276/One_Punch_Man
Fall 2015 (12 episodes), Spring 2019 (0/12 episodes, unfinished)
My Score: 4/10, MAL Score: 8.51/10 S1, 7.47/10 S2
Best Character: Tatsumaki

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kErJOepkDQk

Premise: Saitama followed his dream of becoming a hero, but he trained so hard that he can beat any enemy in one punch now. Unable to experience the thrill of battle, Saitama is growing bored.

The Good: One Punch Man has a fun premise. It takes anime power levels to the most insane extreme that they can go. The animation was always impressive (Ive only seen the first season, and from what Ive heard this isnt true in the second). Just because Saitama can win in one punch doesnt mean the battles arent fun to watch! The enemies are all creative, and any battle that doesnt involve Saitama still has stakes. My favorite character was sassy lost child Tornado.

The Bad: By the end of the first season, One Punch Man started feeling repetitive. I classify this as action and comedy, and both those aspects began running into trouble. Once the novelty of the concept wore off, I got bored with the battles because they were just flashy distractions until Saitama threw a punch. A lot of the jokes got stale too, like none of the heroes realizing how strong Saitama was when it shouldve been incredibly obvious.

Overall: One Punch Man was fun to watch for one season. By the end of it, though, I was tired of the premise. The whole point of the anime is that Saitama can win in one punch, so I cant say it did anything wrong or that it should change anything to win be back. It just turned out that this wasnt enough to carry a whole anime, at least for me.

179. Interviews with Monster Girls
https://myanimelist.net/anime/33988/Demi-chan_wa_Kataritai
Winter 2017 (12 episodes) plus 1 OVA
My Score: 4/10, MAL Score: 7.56/10
Best Character: Satou Sakie

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ail6FwK7gR4

Premise: Takahashi Tetsuo is a high school biology teacher, and some of his students are half-monsters such as a vampire or a dullahan. He interviews them to learn about their lives.

The Good: Interviews with Monster Girls mostly feels like a slice-of-life anime, but it has a supernatural twist. I always enjoy ideas like that where typical anime antics are made fresh by something new in the premise. Tetsuo interviewing his students is a good excuse for the plot to delve into the intricacies of what it means to be these creatures in this setting. I also appreciated that, vampire aside, they used some more unique monsters like a dullahan who carries her head around or a snow woman. My favorite was the succubus teacher, Sakie, because she had the most interesting dilemma. She gave off aphrodisiac pheromones whether she wanted to or not, which obviously isnt an easy thing to live with. It was the monster quirk most applicable to real life by far, plenty of women need to worry about unwanted advances.

The Bad: As interesting as I found the premise and some of the characters, ultimately this anime was just too slow. The interviews were a good framing device to examine things, but they quickly became uninteresting. Aside from a few monster quirks, the slice-of-life aspects felt generic as well. Theres nothing here that cant be found in other, better school anime.

Overall: Interviews with Monster Girls was a slice-of-life anime with a supernatural twist, which is something that I often like. It has some interesting creatures with neat quirks, as well as one really good character in Sakie. In the end, however, its mostly just a typical school anime, and the whole interview aspect only served to slow things down.

Wiktionary says it is, and the definition is the first thing I see when I google it, so...

Anyway, I actually liked this well enough. It was a nice slice of life without being a creepy harem. Yeah, Kyouko had a crush on Tetsuo, but it felt like something she'd grow out of rather than being "in love" with him. Meanwhile, I liked the dynamic between Tetsuo and Sakie, with him intentionally holding himself back to allow her to feel "normal", only for that the make her horny for him. The girls were also cute together, especially Hikari and Yuki, and even the side friends and Hikari's sister were nice. Yeah, kinda slow, but pretty nice.

This was definitely my favorite part. The students just didn't reach me as much, I dunno.

As for Centaur (kinda ranking spoilers) I got halfway through it but never finished it. There have been lots of times in the past where I tried to watch too much and some got lost in the shuffle. I don't know what score I'd give it, but I remember my favorite thing wasnt the monster girls, it was the subtly dystopian society they lived in. I really should rewatch the first half and finish it someday.

I don't know what anime Koala is referring to, but there is at least one more monster girl anime waiting to be ranked in my list! It's a much hornier monster girl anime than Interviews.

178. How to Keep a Mummy
https://myanimelist.net/anime/35828/Miira_no_Kaikata
Winter 2018 (12 episodes)
My Score: 4/10, MAL Score: 7.47/10
Best Character: Mii-kun

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B21sXOWWKJE

Premise: Kashiwagi Sora often receives strange packages from his adventurer father, and the latest one is a tiny, adorable mummy! Now Sora needs to learn how to take care of Mii-kun.

The Good: How to Keep a Mummy excels when it comes to cuteness. Mii-kun is adorable in everything he does. Other creatures began showing up as well, including a tiny dragon and a baby oni, and all of those are cute too. Large parts of this anime are the creatures doing cute things, learning about the world, or their owners learning about them, and I enjoyed most of that.

The Bad: The human characters really drag everything down. Sora is flat and boring, existing only as an audience surrogate to observe Mii-kun. Thats fine, I suppose, but Id have preferred if he had a bit more of his own character. His friend Tazuki was a jerk to everything and everyone, including Mii-kun. Their interactions were the only times that tiny mummy was on-screen without it being fun. The other two human characters werent memorable either. The humans definitely arent the focus, but its still such a drag whenever scenes involve them because theyre all so much worse than the monsters.

Overall: How to Keep a Mummy is a fine anime if all you want to see is a cute mummy, among other tiny monsters. It doesnt have a whole lot of depth beyond that, however, and I blame the humans for that. The owners of these cute pets are either boring or annoying jerks, and they drag How to Keep a Mummy down.

COMING UP TOMORROW:
177: This anime is only a few inches tall.
176: This anime is tired after being woken up all throughout the night.

177. Hakumei and Mikochi
https://myanimelist.net/anime/36094/Hakumei_to_Mikochi
Winter 2018 (12 episodes)
My Score: 4/10, MAL Score: 7.68/10
Best Character: Sen

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hr4e3BPDZoo

Premise: Hakumei and Mikochi are tiny people only a few inches tall who live together in a house built into a tree. They spend their days in a forest thats much bigger than they are.

The Good: This is a fantasy slice-of-life about the relaxing adventures of the titular characters. I always enjoy a good relaxing anime, and theres a lot of nice moments in Hakumei and Mikochi. My favorite stuff was all the little details that fleshed out the world. One episode dealt with fixing a wall in town. Even though it was only made of a few small rocks, for the tiny people in this world that was a massive construction undertaking. Sen was my favorite character. Her animated skeletons were cool and unique. Hakumei and Mikochi themselves were also fine.

The Bad: Out of all the genres, relaxing anime like this are probably my default favorite. No sadness, no drama, just cuteness and lighthearted fun. Thats why Im always disappointed when one doesnt resonate with me. Theres nothing wrong with Hakumei and Mikochi, and I can easily think of lots of little things I enjoyed. Im usually a sucker for light fantasy slice-of-life. It was just missing something, some spark that wouldve helped it resonate with me more. I dont know what that was exactly. All I know it, by the end of it, I felt more ambivalent than anything.

Overall: I may have only given Hakumei and Mikochi a 4/10, but that doesnt mean I disliked it. Its a cute, relaxing anime about tiny people in a big forest. For one reason or another, it simply didnt resonate for me. Im always glad to give anime like this a shot, though Its impossible to know which will have all the right elements to become a personal favorite without trying them.

We're into that part of the ranking for sure. It didn't always work out, and it might not seem obvious to anyone but me, but I did try to group shows with commonalities together. OPM was the end of the "I acknowledge it was good, it just wasn't for me" group. Now we're into "low-stakes cute and relaxing, which I usually love, but for some reason I didn't love these".

Interviews, Mummy, and Hakumei were all nice shows to watch! They just weren't anywhere near being my favorites in their genre.

176. Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle
https://myanimelist.net/anime/40397/Maoujou_de_Oyasumi
Fall 2020 (12 episodes)
My Score: 4/10, MAL Score: 8.00/10
Best Character: Sakkyun

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ui-KKFZKIq4

Premise: Demon Lord Tasogare has kidnapped human princess Kaymin Aurora Suya Rhys. For the princess, however, the worst thing about her imprisonment is that she cant get a good sleep in her cell!

The Good: Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle is a comedy following the escapades of the princess as she acquires what she needs to get the best sleep possible. There's other stuff occasionally, like cutaways to a hero's epic quest to rescue her (which is filled with failures) and meetings where the demon leaders discuss what to do with a captive who can easily escape her cell and outwit or overpower anyone she comes across. For the most part, though, this is exclusively about the princess wanting a good sleep. For such a singular premise, I'm surprised it never gets repetitive. It helps that there's a large cast of colorful monster characters throughout the castle. My favorite was Sakkyun, the succubus who gets forced to be the princess' body double. Mostly, however, the writing is simply clever enough to keep finding new ways for the princess to try to get a good sleep.

The Bad: While Sleepy Princess never became repetitive, I'm not sure I'd ever call it compelling. For example, I really struggled to pick a favorite character. The princess only cares about sleep, the demon lord only cares about imprisoning her, and everyone else is a one-note monster so I just picked my favorite one of those. It's a good gag anime, but my favorite shows like that still have a bit more going for them in terms of overall plot or characters.

Overall: Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle is a solid gag anime about exactly what its title says. It doesn't even pretend to have much depth beyond that, which is both good and bad. My low ranking of this is mostly my own fault too. I binged it all in one night, and it isn't that kind of anime. I imagine it would be better watched one episode at a time over a longer period, to keep the sleepy misadventures from getting stale.

COMING UP TOMORROW:
175: A little girl could beat this anime at shogi.
174: This anime is allergic to romance.

More likely Shion no Ou/Shion's King :p

Sleepy Princess rules. Very funny show, and I thought the humor got pretty creative. The princess is obviously the best character IMO.

175. The Ryuos Work is Never Done
https://myanimelist.net/anime/35905/Ryuuou_no_Oshigoto
Winter 2018 (12 episodes)
My Score: 4/10, MAL Score: 6.86/10
Best Character: Hinatsuru Ai

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsyL_R1GDpc

Premise: Kuzuryuu Yaichi has just become the youngest shogi champion in history. He also takes on a disciple, a young girl named Hinatsuru Ai who shows real talent for the game.

The Good: Ive seen shogi in several anime, yet I do not understand the rules. Thats okay, though, because things like skill, training, competition, and doubts, can all come across even if I know nothing about whatever the focus is. Anyway, The Ryuos Work is Never Done is a shogi anime with equal parts comedy and drama. It also has several little girls who are relatively new at the game bringing the cute girl factor. Ai was easily my favorite, but the others were fun too. The best part of this was still the way both main characters learned to believe in themselves and improve. Ai has talent but shes still a beginner. And Yaichi, despite already attaining the highest rank, needed to prove to everyone, including himself, that it wasnt a fluke.

The Bad: Unfortunately, there was a bit of forced drama in Ryuos Work. I didn't like Ginko, the skilled female player with an icy personality. Still, my main problem was that this didnt do anything special. I praised its themes about believing in oneself and improving, but thats basic stuff in any sports anime (or competitive game you know what I mean). Ryuos Work didnt do anything new, so mostly it just felt generic.

Overall: The Ryuos Work is Never Done is held back by some crappy drama and by never rising above typical sports anime ideas. However, the little girls were cute and fun to watch. The shogi stuff, while ultimately generic, was also nice with some uplifting themes. It at least wasn't bad.

Oh cool a Shogi series. I've wanted to find a good one of those to try since I love Hikaru no Go.

I said I've seen several, but now that I think about it that may not be true. My shogi anime ranking so far is:

1: the one episode of Etotama where Nya-tan learned shogi through intense yet comical physical training
2: March Comes in Like a Lion, an anime someone recommended for this that I'm still only partway through
3: Ryuo's Work

Mac mentioned another one in his guess yesterday that sounded interesting when I looked it up too.

You'd probably like Shion no Ou/Shion's King better than Ryuo. And March Comes In Like a Lion is generally considered by far the best shogi anime.

174. GJ Club
https://myanimelist.net/anime/14811/GJ-bu
Winter 2013 (12 episodes)
My Score: 4/10, MAL Score: 7.31/10
Best Character: Amatsuka Mao

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9S__wUcd8A

Premise: Shinomiya Kyouya is the only guy in the GJ Club, which doesnt have any particular focus. The unique personalities of the four girl members always keeps things interesting.

The Good: There are lots of anime about being in a club, and usually the selling point is whatever specific thing that club does. GJ Club instead takes the aesthetic of being in a club but isnt really about anything. The characters are all archetypes that can be found in other anime, but its still fun watching them hang out and seeing what gags emerge. I liked Mao the best, shes kind of a tsundere but shes allergic to love (or claims she is), and seeing her bite the main dude whenever she gets flustered is funny.

The Bad: There isnt anything wrong with GJ Club, but thats because it never really does anything. The whole premise is that these five characters hang out in a room and jokes develop from there. Some jokes are better than others, but very few are outright hilarious or outright duds. This is just a comedy anime about being in a club boiled down to its most basic form.

Overall: GJ Club is a funny club anime, but in my opinion it suffers from not really being about anything. Asteroid in Love, for example, wasn't as good as this, buy at least it taught me about stars and rocks. Anyway, the thing I remember most about GJ Club is that whoever made it clearly has a hair fetish. The main dude combed his way through the entire female cast over the course of the season. Nothing wrong with that, Im just struggling to find anything else to say about GJ Club.

COMING UP TOMORROW:
173: This anime is self-conscious about missing a year.
172: This anime has lost all of its money.
171: Having been defeated here, this anime will now go back in time and try to do things differently.

but, but, the yuri shipping! her scenes with the teacher are too good <3

(I'll agree that the central premise of the show is dumb and every scene focusing on it was boring, but that's a pretty small amount of the show, lol)

(also it's gorgeous)

iirc, GJ Club's gimmick was that each chapter/story in the novel was 4 pages long to try to be a novel version of a 4 koma series.
