Jeez, it's that old? I was under the impression that it was yet another Twitter-spawned bs thing for people to get pissed about.

Yeah and in that episode it was brought up kind of cynically.

It's 1950s stuff just like the jacket over the puddle. Very outdated and not something you'd have to worry about with most girls

Neon could have been implying that it's stupid to complain about men NOT doing. And I would agree.

If a man wants to abide by that gender norm, it's fine and his choice.
Saying he's supposed to because he's a man is stupid, archaic, and sexist. It's also ironically infantilizing towards women.

Yeah men were expected to do that stuff back in the 1950s. We're not living in that decade anymore.

George or Jerry was asking the other one a list of things they did on a date to see where it went wrong. A bunch of interrogation style questions, one might have been "did you offer to pay?" And one was definitely "did you walk closer to the road" or something.

I actually forget the main plot of the episode and can't find it now

My ex would physically put me on the correct side and get angry when Im not on the side nearest the street, never heard of that before from my previous GF. I literally thought maybe it was a Mexican/Asian thing cause she was half Mexican half Asian so I had no idea. Eventually you learn but in the beginning it sucks being yelled at.

Id guess its cause if a car comes out of nowhere it hits the man first and the girl can perhaps get away. Only thing I can think of.

Were the sacrificial lambs.
It's an old time rule. Walking with her streetside means you're selling her. Its to show off the merchandise, like a pimp. Of course there's the protection angle as well.

Only worthless women with a princess complex bitch about men not doing this stuff. And it's usually rooted in entitlement rather than honest concern.

A strong capable woman would want to protect her man as much as she wants him to protect her. A strong capable woman is all about the mutual, not Flintstone gender norms. She wouldn't be an insecure ratchet dumpster rat that gets bent out of shape over which adult is closer to the street...

If a western woman in this age is whining on social media over "chivalry's dead", she's neither strong or very capable. She's also overlooking that one of the main reasons casual chivalry diminished today in the US is because feminists demanded equality between the sexes. Chivalry is the opposite and so is demanding it. When men don't feel obligated to be chivalrous anymore, they're supporting feminism and passively respecting a woman's ability to be independent.

No, that does not mean a man should feel like crap for wanting to be chivalrous towards the women in his life. It means people should feel like garbage for pressuring him into it based on his sex instead respecting his choice to opt in or out as a human being. The independence of boys and men matters too. You want chivalry? Then show respect to whom it comes from.

My partner has said this to me before as well. I was like "wtf are you talking about"

I still don't fully understand it. I guess that I'm supposed to get hit first if a car comes in the curb?

If I had just seen the image without any other context, I wouldn't have understood what it was even trying to speak against.

The "guy should volunteer to be the first to get hit by a car" argument is nonsensical to me, as any vehicle that hops the sidewalk like that is almost certainly hitting them both anyway. If that doesn't reassure you, well, there's nothing saying you have to walk side by side, anyway. Go in front/behind the guy if you're that scared.

If it was more like a "guy should volunteer to be the more likely one to trip and fall toward the street" argument, that would make a bit more sense. But at the same time, this seems like an issue better resolved by, idk, learning to walk better.

I'm married, the spouse and I are usually holding hands unless it's too hot outside / we're too encumbered to do so, and I don't think either of us have given a single thought as to which one of us is closer to the street. We've only ever considered our positions based on other factors -- like, some houses have some real low-hanging tree branches or something, and I'm the taller one, so me being on one side or the other might spare me some light head trauma. Things like that.

Just treat your partner well in the ways that actually matter, like in terms of emotional support and communication. This hyper traditional focus on public signifiers of chivalry is dumb.

Many of the people who do this the "right" way probably also treat their partners like trash because of the other traditional stuff they've learned.
