Looks like they tried to cram in as many monsters a possible, I kind of get the feeling this will be one of those super rushed movies that should have been 2 or 3 parts instead.

Honestly the "we fucked up and unleashed an ancient evil" bit is pretty spot on for DND.

Also, seeing a mimic on screen is neat.

God fucking DAMN IT. This looks so generic.

Just make a damn adaptation of a forgotten realms book! Or Dragonlance, or fucking anything with a massive built in fanbase already.

Not every D&D movie needs to be a damn heist flick, but if you wanted one, make the most recognizable one! Adapt the Icewind Dale trilogy and get women to the movies by showing them Drizzt and Wulfgar.

Why can't they make a serious DnD movie? When I was a kid reading Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance (2 dnd world settings), I used to imagine what they would be like as movies

But all we get is comedies

Yeah...honestly, if they just went for straight adaptations of Forgotten Realms novels, it would probably be really boring. LotR could have come close with this as well, but it was elevated with high production values and years of pre and post production.

It's just a double-edged sword of adapting work that people have seen heavily referenced in other media before. Making it more irreverent and laid-back is probably the best approach for this film

Forgotten Realms actually has a lot of unique shit in it that is very identifiably forgotten Realms. Greyhawk is the "generic" setting for D&D.

Good way to tell if your DM more into grinding his players into dust or allowing high adventure is for the Druid to ask if they can turn into an Owlbear after encountering them in a campaign. If the DM says no, they're more about grinding players into dust. If they say yes, enjoy the misadventures that come from being an Owlbear.

To be fair most D&D sessions are comedies

Also D&D is the game with giant space hamsters and a bag of magic beans that you use as a combat hazard, so maybe making a completely serious movie out of it isn't exactly faithful to the source material
