Just saw social media posts of viral Algebra problems that most people actually got wrong and they're confident in it. They try to explain it and it's just dead wrong.

Like damn. Just when I thought society couldn't be dumber...this is basic algebra 1. I learned this in middle school.

The crazy thing is that a lot of people actually do know how to do algebra. Its the abstraction of it down to letters that confuses people I feel. We have to do it a lot everyday just to live.

PEMDAS is the easiest way for people to troll people with math.

Is it the problem people always mess up in the style of "ab(c + d)"? I hate those because it's so unoriginal. It's just to catch people who think PEMDAS means that multiplication is always before division.

This is the problem with society...in school its always "when am I ever going to use this?" "how does this help me in the future". They miss the idea that working hard at math in MS/HS can teach them to (1) learn (2) logical reasoning. The more you work towards something the more you refine your learning skills. Math also teaches you logical reasoning, teaches you to think about things in algorithms which helps in many different facets of your life.

I grew up always giving people the benefit of the doubt and forgiving mistakes. I still give people way more benefit of the doubt than they deserve. But I am repeatedly disappointed. So really its my fault at the end of the day. I admit I am somewhat gullible for this reason.

not ooo so much as intentionally obfuscating which part of the fraction is the numerator and which is the denominator. there's a reason my answer to those questions is always "simply your fractions". math isn't actually written that way.

I used to be able to figure out down to the penny what I needed after tax. That was out of "necessity" though as I was a jobless young adult and when I decided to buy beer I often was scraping up change to do so.

Wonder if that ever confused the cashiers cause I'd just empty my pocket onto the counter. Never count it and it would be dead on what I needed.

I'll fully admit, I'm a Senior Manager at an Accounting CPA firm and I suck at math when it comes to stuff like Algebra and Calculus. Luckily in my field, it's more just simple math than anything but I always had a weakness of Math as a subject as a whole. I love that it's logic based, but I always screw up with the computations. It's why we have a saying in the accounting field, only trust an accountant who has a calculator.

I made a teacher mad once. They where lecturing me saying I won't always have a calculator in life. I told himnif my job required more advanced math they probably would want me to have a caculator

In real mathematics, there should be no ambiguity. Formulas aren't designed that way.
If your test has an obscure PEMDAS/BODMAS/PE(DM)AS question, you've not "caught anyone out", you've failed to ask a question.

Tried it myself.

Tags and text drove me crazy.

One misplaced </tr>, <tr>, </td>, <td> always fucked me up.

But I had fun with things like text styles, colors and glow text.

It wasn't hard. Just had to know exactly what sales tax was. Which I think was 8% back then. So for every dollar 8 cents. I'd have to whip out the calculator though cause naturally it's rare for stuff to be nice round numbers like that.

I used to buy a particular beer just cause it would come out to a nice round number. Only reason I'd buy it. Think it was 3 dollars exactly for two tallboys. I used to be such a lightweight.
