It's basically a successor to Nathan For You, except instead of helping small businesses he helps people overcome problems in their lives by crafting overly-elaborate "rehearsals" of the challenge they want to face.

Nathan For You is one of my favorite tv shows ever so I'm 100% on board with this. Goes up on HBO and HBO Max at 11ET.

Finding Francis isn't even Nathan For You, it's a 90 minute feature film. And it's glorious.

Started a little slow, but by the time they got to him stealing the trivia answers and trying to teach him subconsciously on the walk - I was all in. Also the cut at the very end when Nathan was confessing this and it cuts to him only telling the actor made me laugh really hard.

Not sure if it will be as good as Nathan For You, but really, what can be.

I haven't heard about this. I need to check it out ASAP. Also consider Nathan For You to be one of my favorite shows.

Holy shit, I loved this. It still brings that perfect NFY combination of making me crack up with the ever-increasing absurdity of the situation and making me cringe and want to crawl into a hole at the most awkward moments.

The moment the series hit with: "Remember when those people showed up to your place a few weeks ago about a gas leak?" ".......yes?" I was already hooked.

Subtly seeding the trivia answers to the guy was incredible. "It's at times like these I curse the Chinese for inventing gunpowder" had me bursting out laughing.

And just the sheer scale of how things progressed was amazing. The HBO money is really stepping things up a notch. The bar looked incredible. The camera shot where you see them walk out the door of the fake bar, and then out the door of the warehouse was such a minor thing that made me laugh so much.

lots of impressive stuff about this, but I gotta give a shout out to the Trisha actor who really nailed her entire vibe

I loved when the first trivia question was asked and it gradually starts playing flashbacks of all the times nathan had been feeding him the answers before. and I thought it was going to completely go off the rails like he realizes that nathan helped him cheat and then it turns into a whole scene... but instead he just didn't know the answer to the question. even though nathan told it to him. and he somehow never realized that nathan helped him cheat.

Also I've checked out some reviews and apparently HBO has only sent out the first 5 of 6 episodes for review.

So they're holding the finale for reasons.

That gets me very excited.

Only watched 10 mins so far but I'm so glad this is a spiritual sequel to NFY and it's hitting the mark so well already

That sequence at the end where he's phoning up every single parent with a sheets of diagrams was incredible.

Oh man that cliffhanger.

I did not expect this episode to go where it went. When it started to get towards the end and the kid was still a baby, I was expecting the mom to bail on the project.

This show is great.

I am also loving this show! It has made me finally get around to watching Nathan For You, which might be even better (halfway through it).

I saw "Carrie Kemper" in the credits of Rehearsal episode 2, as one of the Executive Producers, and I thought, oh man, wasn't she a writer on the office? (I'm one of those office obsessors.)

Sure enough, I looked at her IMDB, and she wrote for the last several seasons of the office...

She's written for just a few tv shows, but they're all good as hell. Nathan For You? Baskets?? Silicon Valley??? What a friggin' resume.

(She's also Ellie Kemper's sister, whoa.)

I liked this episode a lot more. The first one was good, but I'm absolutely fascinated to see where the story goes from here.

Robin was like the perfect mix of being completely transparent but also beyond comprehension.
The Night Owl guy was great, I hope he continues to show up. I'd love to hear more of his theories about the people able to communicate with sasquatch.

j think its safe to say there wont be any sort of Nathan falls for his fake co-parent storyline. No one would believe it

Holy shit, he's actually using time travel now. The digital mirrors and planting fully grown produce represents how much I love how even the most extreme ideas get pushed further and further.

The fact that he actually made that inheritance guy LITERALLY dig for gold is one of the best jokes ever.

"Wiping grandpa's ass while watching Dragon Ball Z", there are so many amazing quotes in this show.

it's a shame it didn't work out. i always wondered how many stories he can't show because the person quit before it ended. i think there was one or two in the past where they ended it early and it got shown anyway, but this was the most definitive ghosting. he's lucky it came to an emotional climax first so it could still be made into an episode. but that also makes it so that we're sort of unsure if the guy left because he was done being pranked, or if because he got too emotional and was embarrassed or unable to handle that.

well his plan literally worked too perfectly this time and it got a little too real for the guy i think

that guy was an interesting case. Early on they show his casual antisemitism and you think uh oh, but then he ends up looking like a genuinely good dude during his interactions with fake grandpa, and he gets really sincere and emotional by the end... and then hes just gone.

hes maybe one of the most normal people Nathan has ever had on a show. A little ignorant, but generally well meaning and no super out there quirk.

I think that's one of the best things about his work. It's how you can see how people are people. Even very flawed individuals can have aspects about them that are relatable and make you compassionate for them. No one is truly one-dimensional or strictly bad or good. Bill in Finding Frances was a classic example; it could get really hard to empathize with him sometimes, but overall he was just human and you imagine how it would feel to be in his shoes.

Towards the end of the episode, after the guy disappears, Nathan narrates something like "Maybe for some people, the rehearsal itself, is all they needed." (Approximately, I probly got it slightly wrong.)

I wasn't 100% sure how to interpret that, but maybe Nathan was suggesting that the guy didn't actually care about the money that much, and all he really needed was the emotional release, and the ability to move on from losing his dad. Maybe the rehearsal solved everything he needed? (Maybe he even realized his girlfriend kinda might BE a gold digger??)

I'm definitely finding Rehearsal less funny compared to Nathan For You (which was non-stop absolute hilarity), but it's a little more thought-provoking and avant garde, so it's just as good.

Just watched the first episode of this tonight, never seen Nathan for You, but this episode was absolutely incredible and now I'm gonna be looking forward to this every week.

I get this now! Anyway that episode was bonkers. Loved it and I felt it was funnier than the first too.

Woah, I actually walked past the studio used for the Nathan Fielder acting classic last week. I remember it distinctly because there were people in it practicing fight scenes and it looked cool. I was blown away to see it pop up for the show.

"I had not felt that, when I was him." Bwahaha

The number of additional layers to everything this show does is really bending my brain.

I feel like there was a potentially infinite feedback loop of him going into deeper layers of playing the actor who was also playing the part of another person, but somehow Nathan managed to escape from it.

The juxtaposition of Nathan and the child actors taking this experiment so seriously, and then the sudden cuts to Angela just chilling and not actually being that invested... is wild. I'm not sure exactly what is the point of keeping this up for so long, when her level of commitment to the rehearsal is essentially 'yeah sure you can delete my 15 year old son and we'll just replace him with a new 6 year old.' But I'm guessing that this all went somewhere, eventually, otherwise Nathan would have just cut it from the show.

i don't necessarily share your hope - honestly i don't really like the "profound" stuff they're going for - i prefer the Nathan For You format of just finding new people to fuck with every week. At this point he's more messing with people who already know they're part of a show because they are paid actors. Which is still sort of funny and I get that that's part of the multi-level thing they're going for, but yeah, personal preference I'd rather, like... not do this "deep" stuff. I wanted more plot-of-the-week stuff like episode 1 but they've got bigger plans.

But I'm also not sure at all if they're going anywhere with the Angela thing. I think the theme at this point is meant to be that he's taken over the thing for himself and it's not even about her rehearsal anymore. I'm not sure they could just "cut it from the show" because I don't really know what else they even had. Last week's plot they couldn't even get a resolution but they aired it anyway. I imagine cutting a single business in NFY wasn't a big deal if it didn't work out, but here they build sets and hire a million actors lol so they've gotta commit

Those are some good points, and I don't disagree at all. I definitely wouldn't say this show is objectively better than Natan For You or anything like that. Hell, I'm not even sure if I enjoy it more on a subjective level. I'm just enjoy it as something different. And if Nathan wants to make this kind of project instead of what he was doing before, I'm all for it.

And if Nathan wants to make this kind of project instead of what he was doing before, I'm all for it.

I think this show is better if you've seen all of NFY, because you get more of the deviation from the standard format and you get Nathan himself a bit more so the meta and "character development" aspects are more charming.
