https://youtu.be/IHyCPe4sKzk It's a very challenging song to listen to, but there's a video interview with John K. Samson where he performs it as a toast and it makes a lot more sense. It's the first thing he does in this 50+ minute video: https://youtu.be/iW3buuhnRlU It was my least favourite Weakerthans song for a long time, but after watching it performed as a toast, it's grown on me a lot. Gump Worsley was a hockey goalie from before masks were required in the game. The last two lines of the song are "he swore he was never afraid of the puck / we believe him / if anyone should ask, the inscription should read: / my face was my mask".
